Panasonic PZ80/PZ85 Owners Thread [No Price Talk] - Page 348

It seems a no brainer, if same price just take the 85 but.. The ratings are different, 4.8 at 60 reviews vs 4.3 at 30

The 4.8 with the 80u, along with the 4.9 on the 46" 80u, are way better reviews than the 85u reviews. 85 has numerous 1's with basic hardware failures, dying systems, ghosting. But no mention of those on the 80's.

So I wonder, is this chance or due to the few changes, does the 85 have a better chance of fail?

Thoughts?

I noted the same thing when i was spec'ing my screen, not sure why the ratings are so different. My attempt at a logic here is that the average 85 purchaser is probably more of an AV enthusiast and more likely to be critical, hence a lower rating. the average 80 user probably isnt as technical and worried about things and was attracted by price (Note: Exclusive of all people who read this thread of course )

As far as failing - my advice would be to worry about it too much. All electronic has an out of the box failure rate. Its a fact of life. Also people get sets that were either manufactured on a Friday when everyone's in a hurry for the weekend or they are made on a Monday when everyone is pissed off! (These sets tend to suck a bit). But if you arent happy either way just return it for a new one.

price being equal and you are happy with the brand go with the 85

No, I mean 46PZ800u with 4 HDMI (contrast 30,000:1). Now they're offering the 50PZ800u, 46PZ800u and the TH-C42FD18.

I think what he meant to say was... RGB Range is set to Limited and not FULL. I have read some conflicting reports on this RGB setting. If your TV doesnt support it your blacks will be washed out, by which i mean all black areas of will just apear black and not varying degree's of black. So you wont see as much detail in the dark areas but the colour will be better.

I think the RGB range on the PS3 can be set to Limited or Full - Mines always been set to FULL from the day i got it.

Umm. I'm packing up my defective TV now to go swap and....

I'm lookin at the back of it, the top back. There are four grated areas for the fans to blow out, two in the middle and one on either end.

If one of you are bored and have your set easily slideable... do you have fans in all four of those spots? I have fans in the middle two and one of the sides - the other side there's no fan...I can just see on down in there.

Just curious..

Looking at my 50in (85U) from the front, only the very left one is missing, the rest of the holes have fans in them.

I think I read the reviews for the 85u from BB at one point and there were a couple of 1 star reviews that idiots left because they didn't like BB or they talked to an idiot from Panny when they called for help. I would take nothing by it. I really wish places would eliminate those reviews that morons leave that drop the rating - the rating of THE PRODUCT, not of the store or the products customer service.

Do you guys use RGB Full and Superwhite on w/ your PS3's on your 85/80's? I've been using Limited and on, but would you recommend trying Full?

Agreed, half have only had the set a couple of days, and most couldn't tell the difference between an apple and a banana. I don't put much weight in customer reviews. They seem to rate the experience of buying instead of the product.

The set costco is offering is not the 800u, i beleive its the 85u which is still a good set but 800u and 850u are top of the line panny's that compete with the pioneer elites..
I'm the proud new owner of a 50PZ85U. I've previously purchased 3 Panasonic plasmas for myself and family, but all of the 720p variety, and we've all been quite pleased. Hopefully I'll notice a step up from 720p to 1080p with Blu-ray so I don't feel bad about spending the extra cash.

Its showing the 46" with 4 HDMI, not 3 HDMI (85u)

Costco and other companys sometimes switch out some components of a set I.E. 1 more or less HDMI or Add a PC input something like that and change the model # and sell at there stores, its like that for black friday and superbowl mostly, i highly doubt that it is a panny 800u.. if u somehow prove me wrong id hop on that deal though

Been reading a lot on burn-in. It sure makes me nervous. This'll be our first plasma.

Assuming I follow the break-in guidelines here, would I then need to worry about say... our lineup of abc shows that lasts 2 hours - with the logo there the whole time?

I want to assume not or the set wouldn't sell so well. Right?

Switch from cable to UVerse!

I'm sure it's different everywhere, but the UVerse HD feeds I'm getting are far inferior to the HD feeds of Cox cable(yes, I was warned.. HERE). Be that as it may it's working into a good Panny experiment as I'm slapping a Philips indoor antenna into the Panny to test out it's OTA reception abilities. Because of the cost savings with the UVerse package I may stick with it even with the over compressed HD.. if I can get the broadcast stations in with the internal tuner it'll be a fair trade. And the uverse feeds on the analog TVs is as much BETTER than cable as it is inferior for the HD..

Anyone try out the internal tuner yet on the 85U? I'll post some reports on my experience tonight..

Let's all pray that some day we can get FIOS - from what I hear it's the cream of the crop.

As far as the tuner goes, I would say it works quite well. I have mine hooked up to one of the little Terk indoor non-amplified antennas for when my local HD channels aren't working on cable (about 30% of the time thanks to Charter) and it picks up all the locals great plus a couple from further away.

Hehe, when the tech was installing everything I asked about at&t moving to fios and he of handedly said,"They'll HAVE to" Once I saw the picture I understood :P

The little antenna I got only really pulls in a PBS channel with full blown 'Wow', but I'll toy around with it. Maybe I'll check out some of the bigger units in the other forum dedicated to 'em.

See, if I had a lousy TV instead of the Panny I probably wouldn't see the difference and not have these issues!

Edited: If you're trying to draw in OTH signals give your Panny some time. Aside from ABC which is 40 miles away the pz85u is now displaying some of the most stunning pictures I've seen short of a BD! The PQ is absolutely jaw dropping and even if you have a good cable or satellite signal you'll only be doing yourself a favor getting a $20 set of rabbit ears to check out the local transmissions.

I didn't notice your model but I have a 46PZ85 built in March 2008. It has five fan mounts and five fans. There have been other reports of "missing" fans.

watz up fellow panny entusiasts. i've had my 42-pz85u for ~1 month now and love it. i broke it in via sd card with low contrast, color, brightness yada yada yada. been playin' 360 and ps3 with no problem untill now. i played guitar hero world tour for ~ an hour and a a half and when i turned off my xbox there it was. rock meter, falling jewel pathway, score bar and wierd tingley feelings all over. u know rage, confusion, sadness. i tried the scrolling white bar, a few hours of hd cable tv, and even shutting in down a spell to no avail. its been ~10 hours since the "incident". anyone have any advice, words of encouragement, a copy of "your last will and testment for dummies". i kid i kid. i'm just freaking out man. any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'm sending my pz85u back, but I'm going to exchange and try another. My speakers are definitely messed up. The voices start to double over and give a creepy effect, like a really cheap voice changing machine. It cycles better and worse every 30 seconds or so and it happens on all types of inputs, so it's something with the speakers themselves or in the audio processing. Hopefully once I get another the gaming issues I'm having will be gone too. I have to say so far I'm really disappointed in Panasonic. This does not feel like an 11th gen product at all, but I'm willing to give them another chance.

I was really happy with the set till I tried to play a little Fallout 3 with the Xbox360. The phosphor lag is inescapable. Everything blurs and there is double or triple vision when moving the camera around. I don't think the double images go smoothly across the screen either, they seem to jump about a cm at a time across like a very extreme judder effect, but this could just be my eyes. Anyone who plays Fallout 3 can verify that the game doesn't even move that fast compared to some other FPS games out there.

It's headache inducing and un-playable. Not sure what to do just yet since I've only had the set for a couple hours now

Reading a few of these posts now and looking at these picture again (really dull colors and washed out) makes me want to ask a stupid question. You guys do have the 360 switched to HD by going into the Dashboard console settings/display and switching it from 480i to 720P/1080P right? Also if you are using component you need to switch it on the input plug to HD as well... I'm guessing everyone already knows this but I actually didn't when I first hooked up my 360 and I was extremely disappointed because the picture was very dull and washed out until I realized it was only outputting 480i and I had to switch it to 1080 in the console settings.
