Co-ask this question.

I am looking for a setting that would maximize the black level while not compromising too much in shadow details.

My PZ85U's black level is an improvement over my LCD but still looks a little gray-ish to me.

Thanks!!

I fully agree with you that live sports SHOULD look spectacular in HD.

I am looking to get my first HD TV and posts like this make me say...

Ummm..should I be doing it.....since most of my watching will be sports

Just asking..since I don't have one yet....

That's why I want to give it more time and see how much I actually notice it during regular everyday viewing. After I get a few more hours on it I might try the HD-DVD of "Blades of Glory" it should have some real white scenes with the ice and all and I'll see if it can been seen then. If worse comes to worse I can even watch a hockey game and see if it shows up then

Ok, what am I missing here. Are people actually paying 2-400 dollars more to buy locally so they can, what... take it home them self? It seems to me Big River has just about the best price, so uhh.... what am I missing? LOL

Anyways, enough rant-- I am looking to get one of these for the bedroom. Thanks for all the great information and reviews. I am sure I'll be enjoying it soon enough paired with a PS3 and surfing around being a bed potato.

I buy expensive products locally, especially in case it craps out.

It's source related for sure but I've been enjoying great images for sports for 4 years now. I started with *D* as the source but they compress too much. I've had *C* for about 2 1/2 years and the images are fantastic. Football, especially on CBS is awesome. Fox, Espn and ABC sports broadcast in 720p but the images I've been watching are pretty decent.

If it craps out BB and CC are going to tell you to take it up with the manufacturer. Am I not right?
depends on if you buy the extended warranty, right?

depends on if you get it home and its broken. I would rather drive back to the B&M and get another, right?

I'd be interested in knowing what percentage of buyers of this kind of product go through brick & mortar stores, and what percentage buy online. I'm using EPP to buy, which is by default an online sort of deal. I do worry that the set might arrive looking ok but have operational issue(s)....then my troubles would begin. Heaven forfend....

i had purchased a samsung 50" and it died after 3 weeks. but luckily i bought locally. i just returned and upgraded to the 85u. much easier than shipping it back. if you dont haver good stores locally then thats a diff issue. here we have ultimate Electronics. Very happy with them.

hey guys,
my 50pz85u will be delivered in a couple days.
still contemplating on whether to mount our keep it on the stand.

question:
how much does the stand protrude from the front of the display? i assume it's not flush with the front or it'd flop forward?

At BB they've only got the 46PZ85U on the stand, but the 50 is probably very similar. Anyway, it protrudes probably about 8-10" in front of the screen.

6 1/2" from the bezel, and 6" from the lip of the speaker "chin."

Oh whoops. Looked like more to me, I was just guessing.

Howabout 8-10 "man inches".

I measured it to be about 6.5 inches on my 50pz85u.

thanks! just found a side view picture on the cc website which made the 15" deep stand look like it was close to the center on the set - so 6.5" would jive.

whew! was a little concerned about the 8-10" reply i got.

on the 50" 85 series tonight at best buy...

yesterday they wouldn't match the extra 10% off from Circuit..but after I saw some posts on here where they used the extra 12% off from the post office..I went back up and tried again...

No problem..we can use the 12% off..( I thought they might say its already on sale so its no good)..

no problems at all..they also gave me free delievery and Hookup...plus took advantage of the 2 years no interest payments..

Still wonder if I should have gotten the 720P instead of 1080P as I don't have a blue ray player right now.

Just hope when I get it..the picture quality makes it all worth the time and effort I have spend the last 4 or 5 months trying to decide LCD or Plasma..

I want to thank everyone on here for their posts..its helped alot...I am sure I will be asking more questions once I get it....

Like what should the settings be...for the first 100 hours..

Right. I guess I can understand the concerns mentioned above. Seems it doesn't bother me much to buy online, hell I've bought cars online before, well leased.

Anyways, likely go with online store and if something happens operationally, then just deal with that. I guess I've been lucky in the years of A/V use that I have not had anything crap out on me within a short time frame. My only concern is the possible damage during shipping, but that concern is not worth $$$$ to me. I'll just reject it and wait another week.

But for $400 that's like a PS3, or stand-alone HD player, or 8 games, or new video card, or smart phone, or or... :P

Going to get it hooked up to a PS3, Dish ViP722, Oppo, and an older-model Onyko receiver. Will try to get some pics up.

Thanks again for all the great info in this thread, I can't wait.

Just curious here... Big river price has gone up 180$ since last wednesday. I had it in my cart and was waiting for a friend to get back on some discount coupons.. next thing i know the price has gone up.

Im waiting for it to come back to what it was before. The good thing about buying locally is the 30 day return policy. You can return it without any questions asked and most places dont charge you any restocking fee.

Darn.. last week i was hoping i would have it for the weekend... now my wait is indefinite!

I'm really interested in the PZ85U 50" model, and have been following this topic closely. I read an earlier post about pinkish skin tones due to the red levels. Can this be adjusted out easily or does correcting require professional calibration? I prefer natural skin tones. I'd like to purchase one this week.

I really don't want to pay the extra money for the 800-850 series since there are reasonable deals at BB and CC right now.

Thanks!

Guess I missed out during the cheap days then. From when I replied the first time (couple of hours ago) until I checked just now getting home, this is message I got at my shopping cart.

"Important Message
Please note that the price of Panasonic Viera TH-50PZ85U 50" 1080p Plasma HDTV has decreased from $X,XXX.YY to $X,XXX.YY since you placed it in your Shopping Cart. Items in your cart will always reflect the most recent price displayed on their product detail pages."

Basically a $8 reduction. I think they must be competing with the two other online stores you can find a bit cheaper at PriceGrabber.

Glad it didn't go up. Don't scare me like that.

-----
EDIT: guess Big River charges a good bit for 3rd party delivery. Seems I'll go with one of the other online stores that doesn't. grrrr

For anyone who is curious about the pixel orbiter setting:
According their Concierge hotline it is only for static screen such as a a dvd player screen saver. On automatic it starts the pixel orbiter after 4 min of a static screen. Or you can change it to force and select 1 to 4 min.

...save $400 AND pay no sales tax OR shipping...charge it on Amex and get another year of warranty--no worries! My CEVA delivery from ADC was smooth and a guy driving solo delivered it. My 85U was vertical in the truck and I had done my research on this thread, watched the video, read the PDF manual and knew ahead of time how to set it up. I helped carry it in, and the delivery guy was impressed that I knew already how to set it up--he sure didn't! (Nice guy though!)
Does anybody know if the 85u and the 800 are actually the same panel ? Perhaps just different electronic or software ?

Thanks
Hey guys, I just picked up a 46pz85U and have a quick question. When the tv is off and I look at the screen closely and at an angle I can see faint black lines that run vertically across the whole screen. Is this normal? I haven't had a chance to turn on the set, so I don't know if they can be seen when it is on. Thanks.
I just placed an order for a 46PZ85U through Big River It looks like its getting shipped out today so I'm hoping it'll get here by the end of the week!
