I can't comment on any other upcoverting DVD players, as I haven't viewed any. If you have a 480p source, you may be happy with that, and can save the money to use on a Blu-ray purchase later, if interested in that.

Sorry, I know this is a real newbie question, but what is a 480p source you are sending to the TV? I thought all SD-DVDs were 480i?

bought my 5085 today...

quick question...when it says 30,000:1 native contrast ratio/1,000,000:1 Dynamic contrast ratio...what's the difference?...when is it "dynamic"?

thanks
That 1,000,000:1 is just some bogus number Panasonic cooked up in the lab. They probably got that number by turning off the peak limiter and cranking the pixels up as bright as they can possibly get (which would probably melt your panel) and measuring the black by turning the panel off lol.

That's for weighing in. Maybe the phosphor trails are what I am seeing. My eyes have always been sensitive to screen delay of any kind. I can't watch any projection with a 4X color wheel. I will try to get used to it. It's my only complaint so far.

Thanks for the link. That's definitely what I am seeing. I just have sensitive eyes. Perhaps after burn in it will get better. Its' really not that bad now. I can definitely live with it.

I've been really waiting for someone to give a definitive answer on whether the 85U PQ is better than the 80U or are most of you picking the 85 series because of aesthetics?
Just curious...

My only complaint is sometimes an HD non live shows I get a Red Tint in the face. But I am running my TV using the Standard mode for the first 100 hours and not using Tom or Elways suggested Settings..So that might be part of it

But on live Sporting or TV shows like American Idol..the skin tone looks good...

I am not asking how many are returning it..I guess more so how many wish they would have waited to buy it and got more reviews of it or not bought it at all

Sounded worse than was meant. Just some of these questions make me wonder, considering they just dropped 2k on a tv.

Then theres the fact that people are asking the same stuff over and over and over, one word:

mRak - completely off topic, but what settings do you change on your camera to get those dark shots? I.e., do you just change the exposure and remove the flash?

You want to talk about red faces. Dancing with the Stars is about the worst show for it and it's live. (I know they use a lot of spray tan) I don't know what they are doing on that show but the color is wack. Hot women though!

Thanks, I wish they are a little sharper but they were all taken by my point and shoot digcam in motion.

As for the game, I'm actually kind of upset. The online play stinks, Forza 2 is much better so far but then again this is only a big demo for the most part.

native is the "real" range, dynamic is the range where the native range moves.

I second that question.

I actually prefer the aesthetics of the 80u over 85u. The speaker "chin" on the 85u does not look as streamlined to me. If PQ is about the same and I can save $200, then I will personally lean toward the 80u. (I don't need the PC input)

I guess there aren't enough 80's out there for people to have made comparisons at this point.

The CAT died? And he buzzes!

Well the CATs, as I reported earlier, does not work on Vivid, Standard, or Custom (makes for the super freak picture). But, I was certain it did work on Cinema?

Yesterday I noticed some floating in the picture; sort of like a back feed loop. As soon as the picture got bright, it would immediate make itself dark. So since last night, it does not work, nor this morning?

This may require a few cases of beer!

Sound Buzzing

When the news guy comes on (deep voices), there is often a buzzing in the cabinet, speaker grill, or?

Its ten more cases of beer for me!

Well this CAT did not have nine lives?

I haven't seen the 85 but supposedly the 80 is 20k:1 CR whereas the 85 is 30k:1. That should make a big difference, no?

Well, based on what I've read in previous posts on AVS, I don't think so. But maybe someone like Tom can clarify whether there is a discernible difference between 20k:1 and 30K:1 CR

I just got my 50PZ85U yesterday.

I watched "Ratatouille", "I am Legend" and parts of "300" and played a bit of PS3 "Hot Shots Golf (720P)" (best game ever)

I want to speak to those who are considering this set, but have been discouraged by some of the issues mentioned in this thread.

That these issues exist and are disappointing to some is understandable, but for people like me, who are going from a Vizio 42" LCD to this set I am extremely satisfied.

Ratatouille is the most impressive so far. The scene where Emile and Remy are walking along talking with the mushroom and they walk past the old tractor...unreal, That "looking througha window" feeling that people talk about I get it now. Or right after they get hit by lightneing and they get all fuzzy. So insanly crystal clear, wow.

Completely uncelebrated on Cinema the image was very nice. Blacks are so deep and rich I am glad to be done with the lcd haze that I was living with. The blacks are so pure you can't see the bars when a dark scene is on, so nice. Bye-bye vizio! (Vizios are fine, don't get me wrong!)

Hot Shots never looked so good. Even at 720P I was very surprised at how much more I enjoy this game on this set. Honestly, at times you really feel like you are "in" the game. Fantastic, I look forward to more gaming, albeit light until the break-in period is over.

I noticed a tiny bit of IR after watching "I am Legend", but it went away very quick.

No buzzing, no issues at all really. I can't wait to calibrate it, I can't imagine a better picture.

So there is my plasma-noob report. If you are on the fence and are looking for a killer plasma at a sweet price point I say go for it.

My opinion....Simply stunning.

Exactly what Ive seen. Toms settings at 1080p from a bluray movie gives off a beautiful picture.

I will throw my hat into the ring of buyers of the 5085u who are extremely happy with this model. I was set to get the 800u, but needed a TV ASAP (new house and wife getting unhappy). I bit the bullet and got this on Sunday. Still breaking it in, but so far, no stuck/dead pixels, no hum, no distortion, no grean blob in the middle. Just crystal clear HD and SD, excellent blacks and stunning Blu-Ray. I'll post pics later, but I will recommend the few who seem to have lemons to consider exchanging for another. I think they will happy they did.

you said you are getting great SD picture.. what are your setttings and what kind of source are you getting your channels..Cable/Dish/Direct ???

I am happy with my HD Picures from TW..but disapointed with my SD channels even on the digital side...

Just wondering how you have your TV set up..so I can try to get the same results on mine
post #2487 of 12670
On a 50" tv, most SD signals are not going to look great. In the past, cable has had a tendancy to have worse SD than Sat. I have dish and its ok, but nothing special.

I am currently using Tom's settings, but with Sharpness set at 25. SD is from Time Warner through one of their Scientific Atlanta 8300HDC DVRs. Don't get me wrong, SD looks no where as good as HD, but I'm very happy considering.

guess you have to give up something to when getting a HD TV..

maybe SD picture would look better if I put it in a box with the black side bars but I don't want to do that right now

thanks again

I have the exact same set up as you from TW.. I assume you are going full screen ?? and not using the black bars on the side to make the picture smaller
