I just bought a 50pz80u that's being delivered wednesday.

My understanding is that for the first 100-150 hours I should avoid programming with bars and other static images. Also, I intend to change my settings right away to reflect some of the suggested settings on this thread for the initial period.

Is there anything else that I should do?

What about television station logos on the screen? Should I just watch movies for the first 100 hours or so?

Thank you in advance for any help / pointers.

I asked about this question also in a few pages back, But noone seems to care.

I watched Casino Royale for the first time on Blu-ray on my PlayStation 3 last night and could not believe how great it looked.

For the 100 hour break in period I've been watching movies and tv (NOT any calibration discs) on these settings, is this okay?

pz85u break in settings:

Cinema mode
Picture: 50
Brightness: 52
Color: 41
Tint: -2
Sharpness: 50
Color Temp: Warm
Black Level: Light

For those new owners who might need to know this. I got my 50PZ85U yesterday and ran 8hrs with the above settings that I found in one of Sandman's post. Hope this help. But, I have trouble setting the black level to Light, the option is grey out...I am using coax in right now, is it not an external input?

Also, there was also a Tom's settings...but I couldn't seem to find it anymore, that's was a pretty popular settings and people mentioned it's pretty close to calibrated settings. If anyone still have that information, please help either posting the link or quote it...Thanks in advance.

Found it:

"Tom's Settings - Keep in mind he has adjusted his service menu (if you live in the Baltimore/DC area you should hire him to come out!)

Cinema
Picture: 60
Brightness: 52
Color: 41
Tint: -2
Sharpness: 50
Color Temp: Warm
Black Level: Light "

Now I just need to know why can't I adjust my Black Level...anyone?

So far I have been watching blu-ray movies and playing games with no problems, I do run the break in dvd for about 2-3 hours a day until I reach 100+ hours.

Its in about 100 instances in this thread. Keep the Picture setting around 50 or 60, avoid letterboxing, tickers, games and enjoy.

I have mounted my 50pz85u on the Verge 50" TV stand shown below. The stand comes with a mounting bracket. This is the first such stand I own, so I couple questions and hope some of you can share your experience.

http://reviews.cnet.com/a-v-furnitur...-32865040.html

1) After I mounted it, the stand seems to wobble a bit. Doesn't exactly give me the solid feeling I am looking for. I am kind of worry for my TV. It seems like the mount to the back pole is solid, but the pole itself kind of wobble. Is it normal? Is it a problem?

2) What other disadvantage do you see?

Thanks,
Sy

Do you have a bunch of other components to weigh it down? If it still wobbles with weight on the lower shelves I'd abandon it.

Thanks I appreciate it. When you say keep the picture setting around 50 or 60 are you talking about the brightness mode? Thanks again in advance.

No, Picture/Contrast. Once you get over 100 hrs you can bump it up if you want.

Why is this setting (hd size = 1 or 2) a global one? It would make sense to have this zoom setting available for each input, wouldn't it? My pc doesn't require overscanning, but when I'm watching hd cable, I can see garbled info on the edges on some channels so I have to go back to tuning on overscan.

Or am I not doing something correctly?
Use Size 1 for hd broadcasts and Size 2 for Blu-ray or HD-DVD you will see the difference if you put a blu-ray in and set it to size1 vs size 2

Hi all,
First thanks for all the knowledge that has been shared in this thread and avsforum, I have learned a lot.
I just bought a 50PZ80U a few days ago and am doing some break in. I love this set except for on the first couple of white and blue screens I noticed that I have a PINK tint being pushed. It also affects the 50 to 100hz gray scales. They have the pink tint. Can anyone tell me if this is a gray scale issue so that it can be corrected or is it in the panel. I really don't know if I can live with this.
Can anyone else confirm that the whites are white on your set when running the break in DVD, and is your gray scale gray all the way? Do all TV's have something not quite right. I hate to take it back and get a TV that has worse problems (yes I read the Red/Green Tint thread). I love the picture on this set, but I originally was looking at the new Samsung 50A550, but I got a smokin' deal on the 50PZ80 coupled with Panasonics reputation I bought it. I am bummed and don't know what to do. I have read about problems on the Panny's this year, like the Samsungs had last year. All this money not to be satisfied.

Thanks in advance for all reply's

P.O.

I actually use size 2 for everything, size 1 zooms my HD programming.

Yes but depending on the hd feed of the channel Size 2 can give you the green line on right side of set. Alot of people experience this if your not God Bless. I have FIOS and certain channels will give me the green line if I don't switch to Size 1, yes I would prefer to always use Size 2 if I could which would produce no overscan.

Hmmm, I have not see that. Im using a Dish Network HDDVR at 1080i full time, I do see issues(not a green line) if I send the tv 720p though.

I get the line on the left side and it's usually yellow to green. It appears mostly on NBC programming. I've never seen it on CBS or ESPN. It's a shame there is no way to adjust the picture to the left or right to get rid of it.

I'm not sure of the issue I will wait for the new box coming out later this year my current box is a QIP 6416-2 Motorola transmitting 1080i

The European models of the PZ85U seem to be practically the same TV as the 800U here, they have proper 24p support, 5120 shades of gradation and IFC something our models lack completely. It's really too bad Panasonic decided to cut corners for the US market.

Is it OK to watch 4x3 SD shows on an HD channel since these shows are sent with black pillar boxes? I know that everyone has said to set the pillar box color to grey, but my wife watches a lot of 4x3 SD shows that I record on HD channels (I have the SD version of my channels hidden on my Directv HD DVR) such as: Biggest Loser, Bachelor, Bachelorette, Wife Swap, Super Nanny, Wiggles for my daughter, plus our local news which is not in HD. These shows are all sent out with black pillar boxes by the networks that can't be changed by the viewer. Do these pose a problem at all?

Setting the aspect ratio to 4:3 in the tv will superimpose gray bars on your 4:3 material even if it's sent out with black bars

Oh. I don't have the option with my current set, so I didn't think of that. Would doing this require me to have the TV remote handy so when I switch to an HD 16x9 program that I'd have to change this setting on the TV? Or is this setting just a set it and forget type of setting?

Right now the only remote I use my DVR remote which controls the DVR and turns TV on/off and audio receiver on/off and volume. Thanks.

Indiana627, read through the Break-In thread stickied at the top for some good information, but if it were me, I would use Just mode to stretch the picture. If you (or your wife) are going to watch a large proportion of 4:3, you could get uneven wear if you don't.
to those who purchased via an epp: do they give you any idea what day it will arrive? how flexible are they? are they good about keeping the unit oriented correctly during shipping?

I've scanned through the break in thread a few times, but it can be hard to follow without actually owning the TV yet.

One last question if I may: so with this TV, you can still stretch the picture even when it is 720p or 1080i signal? With my current TV I can't do that (I can only stretch 480), which is why I didn't think of that solution either. Thanks for the patience.

Guess I will post againlooks like most have missed this?

FreeSAT HD - 80 channels. This is strictly a political issue, not a technical one!

(Panasonic PZ81 series)

Now which Political nominee can deliver? Can they stand up to the pressures of Comcast, Time Warner, Dish, Direct-TV, etc?
Yes you can stretch and zoom on every resolution with this TV

I wonder how the price of the European version compares to the North American? Is this version more costly?...Maybe the European version is to "replace" the 800 series in Europe? It just doesn't make any sense as to why the European verison would have 24p and 5120 and not the US version at a comparable price.

I just bought a 46PZ85U and it is beautifull!

This may be a general HDTV question, but since I bought a Panasonic...
I had a question on playing a standard DVD movie on it.

Can I play the movie using a plain old DVD player or do I have to use a upconvert DVD player?

I ask because I attempted to hook up my std DVD player, using component connection, selected comp 1 and nothing came up.

I then hooked up the Panny upconvert DVD player and it worked fine.

So, I know it works, just not sure why the std DVD player didn't work.

Can I ask one more follow-up to this. What about the networks' logos displayed in the bottom right hand corner of the screen? Are those to be avoided as well?
