Blu-ray movies was nice and the animated movies were even better but I am thinking about exchanging it for a Sammy 650 series due to its 120hz technology with fluid motion but it is a few hundreds more, but worth it since I will have this set for at least 10 years and being placed in my bedroom. Can anyone tell me if I should keep or exchange it. I have a Pioneer 5070 1080i set in my living room and I do not see any graininess while watching the same channels as i did with the 85U and my Pioneer is 2 years old. I guess that shows how well the Pioneers are built. I just think the Sammy with its 120hz technology will be better for a few hundred dollars more. I dont think that a break-in period is necessary with these new sets since they have anti-rentention built in. I believe that is obsolete nowadays.

Are you talking about the sammy 650 lcd or 650 plasma?
If plasma, the 120Hz means nothing and you will have roughly the same exact static and motion resolutions numbers as your Panny.
It will have a cleaner picture though with more accurate colors.(especially skin tones)
But the black level is not as good and it is noticeable.
If 650 LCD, you will have lower motion resolution, plus other lcd "traits/cons".

the sammy plasma vs the 85u is tough, do you want the better blacks or the accurate colors....i bet the average person would be super happy with both

Do you see it while using the "Scrolling Bar" (setup->anti ir->scrolling bar)?

I tried to use the search feature but couldn't really find an answer...
What settings are you using for an XBOX 360 via HDMI cable. Also, for those using surround sound...are you just using the dolby setting or something else?

I do...and it's fantastic. The SD is not all that bad either.

Yes I was talking about the 650 lcd with 120hz. When I compared the two the Sammy, IMO, seemed more crisper and sharper. I got a good deal on the 85U from Jr.com, check them out in NYC. I saved about $400. The price i bought my panny for i cant really complain, I have not seen it lower in price anywhere else. I just want other opinions to see what everyone says. The panny 85u is a nice looking set though. But I really notice why Pioneers charge so much more for their sets, there processors are amazing and make HD content so smooth looking even in 1080i.

oh alright, lcd isn't really my thing, too bright IMO, but to each his own

I am continually amazed by the Panny 85U (also bought through J&R).

There are slight glare issues that need to be tolerated with during the day,
but after dealing with the Sony LCD television I sent back, I am far more
satisfied with the picture I am getting off of plasma.

some people like the lcd brightness, while the picture is brighter, to get a picture on a 50 inch as sharp as the 85u you would have to spend a bit more for an lcd, and still, IMO plasma has the deeper picture

Hello waiting for my pz85u from 6ave.com. Im thinking about connecting my Comcast Hd box, Sony blu-ray to my Sony receiver HDMI input slots and then connecting my tv to the receivers via the HDMI output slot. Is anything lost when you connect your HDMI from the receiver instead of going directly to the tv. Thanks and happy new year.

no, the signal will just pass through untouched, so it will be the same, but i would connect your cable box to the tv if you dont want to use your receiver all day....does your receiver decode true hd ?

i agree, i got my hdmi's on deal of the day, for $2.50.......i see them at best buy for 100 bucks, they're all the same
post #8988 of 12670
Sony's aren't bad but they are not Denon's either. I got it cause of the price, features and i really didn't hear too many complaints about it. It replaced a 2004 Denon.
I also got the 85u over the 80u cause of the PC input. I didn't want to regret not having one on my set. The only thing is this WHAT THE HELL IS IT FOR? can i connect my apple laptop to the set and watch online shows etc?

yeah, I agree. I want to try the panny plasma with my PC next. I want to see how the text looks. heck, if it's good enough, I might take the Sammy 750 back, and get a Panny 42" plasma as a PC monitor. Yeah, I know, burn in risk, but if it lasted 5 years, I would be OK with it, and its a a lot cheaper than a 7 series LCD. Just thinking....

I posted this yesterday:
I have a PZ80U and a Sammy 750 series LCD in the house. I like them both. The LCD is brighter, and is a sharper picture, but the PZ80U has more natural and rich colors. Whites are better with the LCD, blacks are pretty much the same ( to me) , but the 750 series is known for its blacks and contrast. I think of the Panny as more movie like, the Sammy as more video like, partly due to the brightness I think. If the Sammy was a drink, it would be tequila, and the Panny would be a napoleon brandy. That make sense?

yeah you can connect laptop and regular pc's....you just use the cord that plugs into your monitor and plug it into that pc input....my computer has hdmi so i will be using that instead, a big reason im getting the 85u, the 80u has the third hdmi on the front, and i dont like that

i wouldnt worry too much about burn in, just break it in right and dont use it as a monitor untill after a few hundred hours

I'm not sure about power usage too. My PC monitor stays on 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. I know the rated wattage for the panny plasma is at max settings, which nobody would use anyway.

Being a newby and all can you PLEASE break down the proper break-in process for the 85u or give me the link that can explain this process to me. Thanks

You should not have any issues there, the Yamaha's I believe have a few issues, but as far as Ive seen Onkyo, Denon, Pioneer and Sony all pass thru up to 1080p completely unaltered.

Ive been using HDMI only to my receiver for about 1.5 years now and love it.

HDMI's at mono price for $5 bucks are just fine.

What Ive noticed from these 3 rcvr's Ive owned:

Sony 810 - Great unit for HDMI switching, sound is good but a little metallic, speaker calibration tool is ok
Onkyo 605 - Great sound, less metallic than sony and speaker setup was pretty good
Denon 1909 - Hear more detail than I did with the Onkyo, think this is due to the much more detailed speaker setup. Best rcvr Ive ever owned.

HDMI switching on 605 and 1909 is great, had more assignable inputs than the Sony. I went from the 810 to the refurb 605 this summer because I wanted TrueHD and Master. Once I got hooked, I decided it was time to go all in and bought the Denon from 6ave two weeks ago.

The Yamaha RX-V661 does it unaltered, but I think its' the year newer 663 that doesn't.
I own the 661 and it passes untouched.
I have heard of some Onkyo's output voltage being low enough to cause problems with external rack amps for speakers or subs.

But then again I only know about AVR's that have price tags around $500, higher end models fro mthe same manuf. may be completely different.

Im with you there. I also think the only issue with the 663 is passing WTW and BTB, but its something thats not really even noticed.

I got the 1909 for $450 shipped, and for the rcvr I got, i see no need to spend anymore. I see these guys buying denon 3808's and such, holy crap!! I guess if you can afford a pioneer pro plasma, you can afford a $1500 denon

In all honestly, if you look at BBuy and spend $500-$600, you get a damn fine rcvr, whether its Denon, Pioneer or Yammie.

I've said it before and Ill say it again, I have no need for the Theater anymore with a bluray player and this 85u. I figure Ive got about $4300 in the whole setup (I paid $2500 for my 85u last april) and it keeps me at home for movies from Netflix
