Master thread for Panasonic plasma not turning on - Page 7

Hi everyone,

Just found this interesting link to some sort of a Panasonic 1080p plasma service manual. I guess my plasma has some problem with either the SC, SU, SD, or P boards.. whatever those are. Sounds like a serious problem requiring some internal board replacements.

Well, I just e-mailed Mack Camera for service just now... we'll see how that goes. I am glad I decided to get an extended warranty on this TV as I am 4 months past the manufacturer's 1 year warranty. I just hope Mack Camera provides good service at this point.

My 42PZ700U has got the 7 blinking lights. Im a couple of months out of my warranty. any idea how much this is gonna cost for me to get this fixed?

Same thing happened to me. I got the infamous blinking light 2 days after the 30 day return policy. Luckily, Sears is going to let me do an exchange when the television becomes available again......its on back order.

Grahm, I suggest giving Panasonic Concierge a call and see if they can help. You never know they may take care of it.

No dice with them. I am too far out of my warranty. I bought the set in December of 2007.

Grahm, have try removing all connection cords (HDMI, component, etc..) off and seeing if the TV comes on?

Did you purchased this with a credit card? If you used a credit card, check with your credit card company. Most offer an additional one year beyond the manufacturers standard warranty.

it is good to call panasonic, they have fixed tvs with out cost to customer even after warranty is expired, be patient and polite and mention that this is known problem in panasonic sets (obviously the CR will pretend they hae not heard about it at all). if tv is not purchased with credit card which covers extra year in warranty or EW the choice is to look for new sets, new sets are cheaper and it is not wise to spend money on tv out of warranty, repairs are at least $400+.

I dodged a huge bullet. they are going to fix the set. they said a service guy is gonna call me later today. thankfully I was only a couple of weeks out of warranty.

Is there is a list of problems for the blinking lights? I am currently recieving nine blinkling lights and have not seen a problem for nine lights posted on this thread.

I purchased a 46pz85U on Friday from Bhphoto. The TV was made in Dec. 2008. It died with 10 blinking lights after 4 hours of use. We watched a DVD, the TV looked great, turned it on the next day...10 blinking lights and it was dead. Called Bhphoto and they are going to send a replacement...don't know if I want to get this or any Panny again after reading this thread? Thinking Sammy 550...or try again??

I bought my Panny 50PZ80U early in December and it worked for 3 weeks without a hitch. Then, on New Years Eve, with a house full of company wanting to see the New Years eve stuff on TV, it quit with 10 blinking lights. I was livid!!

On the up side, Panasonic had a service tech here within 3 days and they replaced the main PS board and the set's been working fine ever since. I've got my fingers crossed. I thought about exchanging it for another set but, this set is so beautiful that I decided to just keep it. For what it's worth, Panny's concierge service is top notch.

Panasonic also offered to come fix it, but I figured I should not have to have repairs done on a set that I have owned for less than 5 hours. The worry is that it will happen again as I am sure it is the same batch.

I understand your concern. However, in the world of electronics, the term "infant mortality" is used to describe a piece of equipment which fails early in its life, like yours and mine. Once this failure is fixed and the equipment doesn't fail again right away, it usually means that it will go on to have a long, happy life. That's why I decided to keep mine. I still have another 30 days to go on the return policy and if the set doesn't fail again, I'll keep it for long term. Good luck with your choice.

It seems that Panasonics give 10 blinks on certain A/V components tied into the rear HDMI ports. Especially with PCs. There has been discussions elsewhere on the forum that the rear HDMI ports are unbuffered, which causes the problem.

It is usually worth a try to unplug all HDMI cables from the TV and see if it starts normally, before asking for repair or replacement.

Yes, I read that too. I only had a DVD player hdmi attached. Of course I unplugged it to no avail. The 10 blinking lights continued. I read on an amazon thread about the 50" model...same thing happened to him. WTF!

Looks like I gotta wait for my local TV repair shop to order the parts to fix my TV. They said that they don't make it the habit of coming out and not being able to fix the TV on the spot. So they have to order the parts and they will call to make another appointment. Looks like it will be longer then thursday without my TV.

I just noticed that when I turn my TV on the first set of blinks are 6 then after that it is 7 until I unplug the power. does anyone know if this is different from just 7 blinks alone? (unless you count the initial power on light then it would be 7 lights)

Okay...reordered the same tv but from Amazon...30 day return policy and 50 bucks cheaper. I hope I didn't make a big mistake. I keep hearing Panny for plasma, Sammy for LCD.....Panny for plasma, Sammy for LCD..........................

So we got the pz85u Friday..I had a DVD player plugged into HDMI 1, watched a movie, a little tv, turned it off, and then it was dead in the am. 10 blinking lights. I had it plugged into a regular power strip, tried the wall, it would not power up, just 10 lights. I had calibrated it to break in mode, tried everything to start it up..no dice. The guys come to pick up the tv today (got it Friday, I have not tried to turn it on for a couple of days now...I gave up), and it turns on no problem! WTF!! I had them take it back anyway because I have a new one coming, and, I don't want a tv that has some kind of issue. Any ideas? Don't want it to happen again.

Just giving my final update on situation. my 42PZ00U got the 7 blinking lights. from the calls and the guy coming to fix the set it was about a week. Guy came in and replaced a board on the plasma and updated the firmware and the TV was ready to go. Took him about 30 mins.

I have no idea really. he seemed like a guy that didn't like to do much chit chatting. It was a pretty decent size board though. he swapped it out for a brand new one and then took out a piece of paper that had a SD card tapped to it and it had instructions on how to update the firmware.

edit: actually looking at the work order he replaced the SC board.

I returned my 85u after it crapped out in 5 hours. Got a new one that is working fine so far....5 days and counting. If you decide to fix it, Panasonic was very good about arranging a tech. I say return it if you can, but what do I know. Friggen tv.

there is got to be some reason for this failure, there is a pattern, it has been happening to panasonic plasmas on last three years model, how come it is not rectified by panasonic yet, they are knowingly sending out bad product, these are crapping out on people with in hours of use, is there any quality check?

People get false sense of security about quality when they see 100K panel life and these boards are failing in 2-3 years of use, in some cases 3-5 hours of use. Consumers electronics quality is very poor across the board regardless of brand and cost, one has to keep buying new items all the time, and the warranties length are shrinking also because manufacturer know their product don't last that much. One has to buy EW for every electronics product now, here are some of my personal experiences my furnace on house lasted 25+ years water heater lasted 30 years (it was replaced recently), SONY TV 15 years still working OK, VCR 10 years old still working, now the new stuff i bought in last 5-8 years, Maytag fridge has been repaired 10 times with in warranty, i keep extending warranty every year to keep it running, SONY RP HD set replaced under extended warranty, Samsung TV replaced under warranty, few cameras, DVD players, Harman/Kardon AVR replaced under warranty and list goes on and on, it is shame. if TV manufacturer is bragging about panle life that long (100k hours) then they have to back it up by at least warranty of two years.
