Written in 1895, when Mr. Rachmaninoff was twenty-two years old, the Symphony No. 1 in D minor received such harsh criticism after its March 27, 1897 premiere that the composer reportedly destroyed the original score of the piece. After several decades in obscurity, this symphony is rightly regarded as "a powerful work in its own right, finely constructed, thematically integrated, and intensely personal. It achieves a genuine tragedy and heroic expression that somehow stands far above the pathos of the composer's later works" (quoted from the unattributed liner jacket program notes).

This writer is acquainted with many readings of this music, and is particularly enamored of the fiery mid-1960s rendition by the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy in terms of pacing and drama. Previn's 1973 recording is phenomenal on its own terms, he takes somewhat broader tempi than Ormandy but there is a keen feel for the music's architecture. The London Symphony's response to Previn's leadership is second to none, and the analog engineering by Christopher Bishop is quite natural.

Hard-core fans of the Previn/LSO cycle might seek out the UK HMV releases, which are slightly more transparent than the very good U.S. Angel LP pressings.

Highly recommended listening!

I've got a few rare-ish vinyls in perfect shape if anybody is interested. Coldplay's limited box set of singles, Built to Spill's limited reissues, Radiohead's In Rainbows deluxe set, Steely Dan's Aja anniversary reissue, as well as the White Stripes' Icky Thump (not rare, but also available).

Anyone see this article on CNN about the increase in sales of vinyl?

The owner of an independent record store chain here in the Massachusetts area (Newbury Comics) has said he's seeing the uptick in people looking for vinyl. He mentioned that he's expanding his small vinyl floor space to accommodate.

This is happening in Dallas at a place called Good Records. The store used to only have a vinyl section that stretched along a 20ft wall. They recently decided to dedicate the second floor to vinyl to accommodate the increase in popularity.

The last issue of Rolling Stone also had a short feature on vinyl, metioning that there has been a considerable uptick in sales the last two years.

i just found my 30 year old akai 630dss four track 10.5" reel to reel machine today in my dads barn. i thought i had sold it back in '94. so its been sitting for 14 years. and it is HEAVY, maybe 30 lbs.(?)

got it home, cleaned up, cleaned heads, need to get a degausser.
i put on above tape, which i bought new in '73, sounds good for age. probably pieces of oxide flaking off with every turn of the reel. may have to learn to 'bake' tapes!
some w&f, may need to do something with capstan.

there seem to be some vibrations from the motor-i noticed while changing the tapes. maybe capstan is ok.
have to check it out. tomorrow.

direct drive.
i just realized i may have misthreaded the tape. it seems (im not sure yet) that i may have had tape against the capstan but outside the pinch roller. i havent used this machine since '91 so im out of practice.
have to see how w&f does here for bit.
piano always makes for great test in the absence of test gear.

Yup, tape goes BETWEEN the two...

Make sure your supply reel doesn't have its breaking pads touching the hub. ( you would have to look inside the machine to find this though.) A drop of 3-in-1 oil in the motor might help too after all these years. In the capstan sleeve too but...make sure to clean up real good! Don't get it anywhere near the tape. Check the pinch roller to make sure it has some traction to it, not shiny and potentially slippery. A light brushing with fine sandpaper will give it the right grip.

not sure if im ready to open this machine up.
i've done it with other machines (for minor things), usually successfully, but not this one. yet.

Now that the WOW factor of just watching BD movies has somewhat abated, I've starting playing more of my old vinyl LPs.

Just put on Allman Brother's Win Lose or Draw - and played the long song called "High Falls".

I got all comfy with a cold one, no kids, no wife - turned up the volume and just closed my eyes and let the music wash over me.

What a great long song to listen to - no vocals - just a long 'lyrical' type of song. I love Rickie Bett's guitar playing.

Anyway - cheers to vinyl and LPs!

I was listening to my Wish You Were Here LP by Pink Floyd last night and "Shine on..." was so damn phenomenal! It was the first time I listened to that album with my updated stylus and I was mesmerized. I can't wait until I get some better speakers!

Also listened to Taking a Chance on Love by Jane Monheit that I got earlier this week. Also got earlier this week, Surrender by Jane Monheit, The Raven by Rebecca Pidgeon, & Celtic Woman.

Metallica ride the lighting on LP.I just got this found out they are puting a bunch of their albums out on LP in the next few months.

Otherwise its alice cooper as I have a dozen or so on LP.

Now you should try listening to it on CD. I had the album for years, and the CD utterly blows it away. (No surprise there, every CD blows the corresponding vinyl away.)
