Dave Brubeck Quartet - Jazz at Oberlin

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAVE. RIP.

Wow, just stumbled across this gem! I really like it!

While digging it, I started to read about them. This was the debut, and it appears...they took a real nose-dive after this. Man, I find this is sadly the case with a lot of artists; they've got one great album couped-up in them...that's been peculating since they started their first band at like 12. They drop it on the world, and it might hint at sheer genius; but that's it...they're one and done. frown.gif

Evidently, these guys kind of "sold out", and tried to go a totally different direction. So...enjoy this one for what it's worth. Nice!

Agreed. Their first record is stellar. That's what separates the talented from the one-hit or one-album hit wonders of the world I suppose.

Love that album. I recoiled a bit during the first few listens, even though I already knew and liked a couple songs from it. My overriding early impression of the entire album was one of uncomfortably constant shouted singing throughout. Like so much of the music you eventually come to love the most, it took a little longer getting used to. But eventually, I found myself shout-singing right along with them. Well, mouthing the words, mostly. My vocal chords don't have anywhere near that kind of stamina. biggrin.gif

Here's a bit with Florence having the main Cold War Kids singer join her to perform Hospital Beds on stage, interspersed with some quick dressing room rehearsal. At the end she enthusiastically states, "I want to do a cover of your whole album!"

So...for me, it's always been which Pixies album is 3rd best. C'mon; while they're ALL great in their own way...if you don't have 1 & 2, 1 & 2, you're kinda high. So the argument has always been, what's 3rd; this or Bossanova?

Listening to it, I'm gonna give TLM the edge (even though Bossanova has arguably, my favorite Pixies song of all time, in Velouria!). Reason: it's almost anti-Pixies. It's harder, not so many hooks, etc. Sure...we all miss Kim, but she had checked-out by this point anyway.

I saw the Pixies on the tour for this album (their last of course). I also saw them for the reunion tour and they were actually better and played a much longer set. I love Trompe Le Monde because it's kind of all over the map sonically. There's a lot of experimentation.

Trompe Le Monde has Subbacultcha, therefore Trompe Le Monde wins. But then again, I've been known to grope for Lunaaaa.

Uh...I'm certainly no expert, because the heaviest "speed-core" I'll listen to (if the purest even put them there) is TDEP. But this sure sounds heavy as sh*t to me! eek.gif

I think I still prefer the tiniest bit...of pretty Melody on something like this. wink.gif
