3.1 as opposed to 5.1?

Can someone explain the difference?

1 Center channel, 2 Front (L/R) Speakers and 1 Sub = 3.1

add 2 Surrounds to that = 5.1

Ahh got it....Add 2 more satellites to the 5.1 and got 7.1?

Yep.

Virtually all 7.1 receivers can do 3.1 and 5.1 by shutting off the satellites in the setup menu.
