I'm trying to play an avi file which, according to VideoInspector, uses "Intel ITU H.264" as its video codec. I hear audio but cannot see video.
The players I have tried are Real Alternative (Media Player Classic), Windows Media Player, and Quicktime. I have occasionally downloaded codecs before, but after running the codec installation program, my media player just played the file. This time, it didn't work, and I am somewhat ignorant of the exact interaction of a codec and a media player.
At any rate, here is what I have done so far:
I found this link which showed up in a general search for H.264 codec:
afreecodec.com/win/26/h264-codec/download/
This has a couple of links. The first downloaded a program called x264. The only thing I get to run is a Configuration screen which shows info such as bitrate and a "Quantizer".
Another link from the above page is a program "ffdshow". It installed a folder with several configuration programs. But just as with the above program, I see a bunch of information on configuration screens, but ffdshow itself doesn't seem to be a media player, nor is it clear what I need to do to get the H.264 codec to play in any of the players I have installed.
Thus, after installing both of these, my media players still had no video when trying to play the file.
Of the players I've tried, I actually just installed Quicktime (version 7) because I read something that implied it has native H.264 support, but it won't display video for the file but rather says that I need another component which is not installed. It took me to this link:
apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=Windows&ctype=696d6463&csubtype=48323634
but Quicktime doesn't tell me which of these components I need to install, and nothing on this page says anything about H.264.
What do I need to do for this H.264 video file to play?
FYI, I am running Windows XP Home on an AMD machine.
