Auzentech Prelude: Review

I got this card about a month ago. It was a real learning curve understanding how the whole surround sound in gaming works. This forum was a great help in figuring things out so thanks!

Anyway, card and driver install went fine. Immediately using a single spdif cable, once running my receiver was showing a dolby mult-channel signal comming in! The first few games I had it worked well. I went into all my games audio settings and turned EAX and hardware on.

The first kink was with Bioshock... I would try to turn EAX on, restart Bioshock and EAX would not be selected anymore. Again and again same thing. Ok...

Then once I went from a game or two, I would get distortion in sound. Permanently until restart.

Luckily there was a driver release recently that mentioned something about distortion. I was hopeful, and thankfully, since installation a week or so ago, it's not come back.

Bioshock now behaves and tool the change to EAX fine and runs great now. So far I only have one problem. Battlefield 2142 does not work for me with EAX on. As soon as I do this, I get about a 1 or 2 second delay for all sounds. If I switch EAX off it runs fine.

All other games work well and if EAX is available I turn it on.

I'm not sure if it is surround sound in the sense of bullets from behind = sound from behind, etc... I've not tried to do a test to see. In the control panel there is a speaker test and this works across my 5.1 system.

Overall I am pleased so far!

Got one on order. Been happy with the X-mystique, X-plosion and X-meridian cards I been using for my various builds. Just didnt latch on to the X-Fi Prelude because of the cost and the lack of driver support. But it looks like the drivers have caught up to what the other X cards can do. Almost got the ASUS Xonar but since I never has issues with the Auzentech cards I stuck with prelude, also it was on sale which help me to decide.
