Getting some of these things/problems kind of sorted out today - so maybe you can help me from here:
1] to TEST to see whether it might just be the Tuner and it's capabilities preventing me picking up what were my most powerful local digital channels or not - - - I connected the antenna back up to my HDTV's built in tuner....WALA.....Perfect reception.....don't think I even needed to buy the new antenna. And it appears I wish I'd never bought this ATI All in Wonder hd 650 PCIe which is in this HTPC I bought. At least I now know forget the PC Tuner........will really miss the guide info though. Vanilla OTA....is a grab bag.
2] About no sound out of SPDIF....I decided to put in the MSI CDROM and re-install the Realteck drivers/program........so it first uninstalls them.....then I try my sound.......right off the bat, I notice when I scanned lightly over the sound icon.....was using the SPDIF......so I tested my MS Sound bag - all working....I then went to HULU and tried a show there.....WALA....Sound at least in Center, Right, Left Front.....which was quite an improvement and a BIG relief.........when I went into Device Manager it showed all the drivers were MS drivers.
I then re-installed the Realtek setup off of MSI disc......and went back to NO SOUND.....I think I now know why....when you read what it says over the sound icon now it says " HDMI" not "SPDIF" - - - - I think the ol' fella that was here setting it up....he had screens I cannot even FIND, in order to set it up right, and I remember he was real shaky on which options to choose...I kept telling him "SPDIF" and he kept thinking it was HDMI....appears he must have ignored me and picked HDMI......and I cannot for the life of me get to initial setup program for it. I looked at that little connector job to connect up the 5.1 card....WOW! That would drive me even crazier, little holes for wires and even littler screws - YIKES!

Can someone tel me how to access original setup of that Realteck Sound Program?

Also - the man I got this from e-mailed me with what he said was a solution for the poor reception from tuner card.....said I needed to use the features available on the ATI Catalyst Media Center,,,,,,,I don't know if he even installed it.....all I can find is the Catalyst Control Center....NO C. Media Center - which has the very tools that I need. Does anyone know HOW/where to look for this mystery software?

Getting BURNT out on this new high tech toy - let me tell you

TKS michael

Michael,

The TV Wonder 650 card works great for local stuff. I have 2 of them installed in my system and get crystal clear reception. I don't believe there is an issue with the Tuner card. It is more than likely that Media Center is trying to tune the wrong stations inside the s/w. If you manually add the stations like I mention above, it will more than likely work fine.

After the analog cutoff many stations have changed there broadcast channels. You have to go through Media Center setup to scan for channels. This is similar to what you have to do with your HDTV to get all the channels in your area.

After much use (several hours every day) I've been able to pinpoint the apparent cause - after exactly 5 minutes of non-use of a speaker or speakers the amp apparently powers down those channels, and this powering down causes the pop.

I began to notice it because I have a variety of media in both mono and stereo, and when a mono source is playing it only maps to the front speakers (even with speaker fill enabled). So when it switched from a stereo/5.1 source to a mono source exactly 5 minutes into the mono clip I'd hear the pop out of the rear speakers.

Java, hopefully the new D2Audio firmware will (or already does) fix this minor issue.

Wanted to confirm that this is exactly my findings. However the popping issue for me is a lot more serious since I use a separate amp for the front speakers via the motherboard phonos. By God the popping is loud from there, let alone the appalling noise. Can anyone confirm they have the same level of noise via the phono ouptuts? I think this hasn't been highlighted by many or any others than me because it is an unusual setup of amp card and phono outputs.

Do other people also get BIOS Checksum Errors here?

I seem to get them after I haven't turned on the system for a while (like a night).
Have you checked the battery?

Yeah, I removed it and reinserted it. Problem still persists.

Any other ideas?

I am in desperate need of some help. Hoping one of you or Java_Jack could assist. Here's my problem...

I built a fully-working HTPC based on the MSI Live Diva 7.1 motherboard. Later, I received the 5.1 amp card. I then rebuilt the machine with most of the hardware the same, but in a newer case and with the 5.1 card.

When I turned it on, everything seemed to work fine. I then connected speakers to the amp card... no sound. I then put the 7.1 preamp card back in to see if maybe the 5.1 card may be defective and.... no sound.

I do get sound with HDMI, but no audio connectors seem to output (or input) sound, not even the digital out. When I play a sound, it shows the sound bar moving up and down, so at least the system thinks it's outputting something, not all I get is silence.

Any idea?

I tested this on my amp card and I can confirm it as well. I'll through my 7.1 card in today if I get a chance and test that one.

I meant "test" the battery. It may need to be replaced.

Hmm, I have the CMOS Checksum Errors. I wonder whether this is because of my OCZ Titanium memory.

Does someone know whether bios values are written during boot? (without entering the BIOS Setup)

I have only heard a pop on system power up but I did not use the motherboard connectors only the 7.1 connectors configured as 5.1.

Waiting for the new firmware before I use the AMP.

Any idea?

In the "Playback Devices" dialog box (right click speaker icon on taskbar), you have selected the D2 as the default output device?

Another thing I noticed, there are 3 temps in the bios. cpu, temp1 and temp2.

cpu temp...... is cpu temp

temp 1 is ??? This has always remained around the 30 - 34 degrees before replacing the northbridge cooler and also after. I don't know which temperature it measures?

temp 2 is case temp, the sensor for this is on the motherboard next to the amp card.

Was wondering the same thing.

cmos check sum errors shouldn't be effected by the battery, you could get them from overclocking to far when there is a memory error, this board isn't an overclocking board so my next question is have you upgraded the bios to 1.20?

bios 1.20 fixes memory issues, so if you are still on the original bios I would suspect this.

Seems no one knows.... pretty useless temp reading if no one has any idea what it's for.

It was shipped with 1.20 BIOS. There's also no much room for overclocking. I'm now running with a single DIMM and see tomorrow morning if the problem persists. I strongly suspect that my memory has incompatibility issues with this board.

New Blog post up.

Turning it up to 11! Getting more out of your Maui system.

http://links.amd.com/TurnItUp

This one discusses the new f/w coming and the new features it enables on the Maui platfrom.

Would love some feedback on the blog and the new possibilities. Currently tool is targeted at SI/OEM customers, but I am interested in what you guys think of it and whether or not it is useful elsewhere.

I do want to note that those of you that bought into this platform early, we have not forgot about you. This upcoming f/w update will work for you guys too. Still need to figure out the model to get it to you, but I am hopeful we will find a way to bring some value add to your platforms.

Hey, how cool is that, I just noticed my 1000 post was to a new blog demonstrating the value add for the Maui platform.

Just wondering. Are there people here using this board with OCZ Titanium memory? (PC6400)

Or more general: are there people here using this mainboard with memory that has a EPP/SLI memory profile?

Just doing a differential here to see whether this causes my system instabilities.

Hey, how cool is that, I just noticed my 1000 post was to a new blog demonstrating the value add for the Maui platform.

I propose that we create possibly an off-shoot website/forum specifically for enthusiasts of this platform. Already I see system integrators catering toward the 'joe-sixpack' crowd, whereas those of us that frequent here are much more hands on. As such, we also have amongst our ranks some fairly accomplished developers and I'd bet money they could develope some marvelous tools to work with this platform.

Being an enthusiasts forum/website, it would be a place that would attract the technically oriented (who already provide support to the public on this forum) and would limit the possibility of the general public getting 'in over their heads' with modifying the platform.

My .02 anyway...

TKS Again...........FIRST a POSITIVE report - I have gotten, don't know how, am thanking God, 7.1 Sound OUR now from the Realteck SPDIF OUTPUT. Sounds GREAT too.
I disconnected the antenna cable from the Tuner Card and connected it up to the Tuner in mya Sammy HDTV again to TEST reception problems - - - NONE! Everything clear as a bell. So I leave the ATI Tuner disconnected UNTIL I can FIND a download of the Catalyst Media Center......I cannot FIND it at ATI?AMD, have wasted mucho time and effort to NO avail. For some reason, I guess, the man that put this together only installed the Catalyst Contol Center.........I would have thought that that would automatically include their Media Center too - sure appears from what you say and the builder that using that Media Center I would be able to straighten out this reception problem.

PS: I think I may pull and sell this 5.1 Sound card........whoever designed that connector should be SHOT! It is designed for those very small guage wires [little holes] so easy to make them bigger - so all could easily fit and same with those screws to attach the wires.......forget it!

I have read here that this board is not to friendly for over clocking BUT I don't want to go bonkers about it.......My CPU is an AMD Dual Core @ 2.3 GHz and I would LOVE to jack it up to 3.0 GHZ or as close as I can get to that. Can someone here PLEASE tell me WHAT precise things to change in the BIOS to get there?

I am running Win 7 at home and ended up using 2 different drivers to get it working on Win 7.

To enable the tuners, I loaded the 8.11 drivers (that is what I downloaded a long time ago).

Here are the 8.11 drivers.
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...?&lang=English

That got the TV Tuners working in both Vista and Win 7.

Then I loaded the latest 9.6 drivers for Vista to bring it up to date.

Here is a link to the 9.6 drivers.
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...-Bit%20Edition

You then need to set up the TV Tuners in Media Center. Once you do that, you should have everything working.

For the speaker block terminial, this is a industry standard high density connector. It was chosen because it was industry standard and because the cards are low profile to allow for smaller chassis designs. It was the only connector that would allow for all the speaker wires to fit within the card height.

Good news is that the terminal block unplugs from the card so you can connect up your wires then plug it back into the card.

How about another thread covering more technical aspects of the platform?

For example is the flow of audio a result of the firmware or is it the DAE-3? I had thought that it may be possible to make the inputs outputs. That way, if a customer isn't interested in surround sound it would allow for more line inputs using the Preamp.

THANKS again JAVA man - - - YOU are a GOD Send!

I have TREMENDOUS NEWS to share, the Tuner Reception has been solved. I did not have Catylyst Media Center on this new build, the fella that I got it from I guess forgot to put it on this one - PLUS I found out that he did have the CDROM at his place and meant to include it. He is a NICE OLD Nerd and he drove all the way over here today [@40 miles each way] and brought me the CDROM....we loaded it up, he set it up and we scanned, and WALA, GREAT reception now.....so I am in business. Am LOVING this little HTPC....NEXT a Graphics Card to replace the integrated 3200....am thinking of the new ATI 4770 or going with a Nividia 9400 or above.....cooles, quietest, and compliant with the 380 W Antec PS.

Won't be taking up so much space here [that's a relief to you guys] now that I have run out of problems for awhile.

I built my second Maui system today and cannot get any OS to install in a stable way. My first build several weeks ago went smoothly. What I encountered today was random BSOD on every install attempt (~ six). The farthest I got was a complete Win 7 install plus download and install of the latest ATI CCC and Win 7 drivers. As soon as I clicked on the Windows button to reboot I got a BSOD. After several more failed Win 7 install attempts I powered down the PC for 10 minutes then tried a fresh Vista 32 bit install. It crashed on every attempt within a minute of initial file loading from the Vista DVD.

With one exception, all of the Hardware is all new from the Egg:
Antec Fusion Remote Max case
Corsair 400W PS
MSI Diva mobo with 5 channel amp card
AMD 4850e CPU with stock HSF
G Skill DDR 800, PC2 6400 RAM (2X 2GB sticks)
Used Plextor DVD drive

I don't know if this matters or not, but I first tried a working, generic DVD drive that came from a HP desktop PC that was just over a year old. The Maui would not detect it in the BIOS but it picked the Plextor up immediately.

The BIOS reports CPU temp between 32-35C.

Note that (what I assume to be) the IGP heatsink was very hot to the touch. I could not keep my fingers on it more than a few seconds. Is this normal for the Maui board?

Given the symptoms, what is the best way to troubleshoot this? should I buy more RAM of the same type and capacity and swap it with the existing RAM? Do I need to buy another CPU + HSF to do the same test as the RAM, or do the symptoms point to something else? I don't have dedicated PC test gear so I'm not sure how to troubleshoot beyond swapping parts.

Thanks.

I would first suggest swapping ram with your known working system. It seems like a memory issue to me. Loading the OS is very memory intensive application so this could just be a RAM issue.

Is all the h/w the same as your other build?

Other things could be scratched OS disk.
PSU issue (doubtful as Corsair supplies are usually pretty good)
Mobo shorting out against chassis or was scratched on the bottom when installing. (Try a bench build to rule out chassis short)

Thanks for the quick reply JJ. I followed your advice, swapped the RAM first and it appears that it is indeed the culprit. I guess if one is going to experience a failure out the box better it be RAM than other more-inconvenient-components.

Again, thanks for the advice and one lesson I've taken from this is to stock up on working spare parts. .
