I don't think the window of oppertunity is closing, I have a panasonic txp42v10 tv with the network feature, but it's limited on format input and bad configuration. Sure it's nice to watch you tube through it. But a htpc is more than that.....
It's the ability to show you the latest news, show weather, or play games, listen to music or tv all at the push of a button. There's nothing available OEM that compares, probably due to the complexity involved. I believe that the software to enable this experience is maturing all the time and the updates in codecs are happening too fast for the tv or bd vendors to keep up with.
I'm sure the future is with htpc's (at least in an enthusiast market) and this will only be expanded if there is suitable simplicity in the software to make it marketable to the masses.
Reliabilty and simplicty with the greatest support is key. Although a very difficult product to maintain.
An amplified htpc is a great way to start the simplification process and one I sincerely hope continues.
As a side note, does anyone know a suitable alternative to a P70N02LDG mosfet? JJ maybe your techie firends might be able to suggest something, I'm having trouble finding an alternative.
