Blu-ray prices sky high  

Why do people expect prices to just fall now when HDM is still in it's infancy. Toshiba really left a lot of deluded people running around with unrealistic expectations. If you're not willing to pay the premium to be an early adopter, wait it out on the sidelines until Blu-ray reaches mass adoption levels, if it ever does. I loved the low prices of the HD-DVD hardware as much as the next man, but as exhibited by Toshiba closing shop for HDM, it was unrealistic and could not be maintained this early in the game. Prices aren't just going to drop down to bargain bin prices now that Blu-ray is the only game in town so stop expecting it.

Wait, I thought blu ray was competing with downloads, SD DVD, VOD, sock puppets, transmitted video over brainwaves, etc... Which is it? Blu ray is going to fail because of too much competition, or there is no competition?

Hardware manufacture's will compete now that there's only one format, but it'll take at least a year for them to ramp up production of 2.0 players. Movies will take time to go down in price, unfortunately.
