SD programs on HD channels on Comcast HD box

Hi:

I just got the DCH3416 box with my Comcast HD service. It is hooked via HDMI to my new Panasonic TH-50PX80U plasma. Since I am no longer using the display's tuner for cable, I cannot use the auto-stretch mode in the TV (panny calls it JUST), but I can choose to have the Comcast box do it. It will stretch non-HD signals. It works fine on SD channels, but when an HD channel runs an SD show, it of course doesn't know to stretch the image.

Of course I can manually stretch the image on the display side, but it'd be nice to have something happen automatically, as if I was using the TV's tuner (and since my kids, who watch way more than I, couldn't be bothered with such details).

I actually prefer viewing a non-distorted image, but I am posting this because I am concerned about potential harm to the plasma screen with an image that doesn't fill the screen. Would this be the exact same scenario as a non-stretched SD channel, or is it somehow different since the HD signal is actually passing the black bars along with the signal?

If anyone has a way around this, I'd appreciate hearing about it. Would seem to be a pretty common concern.

Thanks in advance,

Dave

P.S. Does anyone know if the stretch mode on the Motorola DCH3416 is a linear or non-linear horizontal stretch?

The black bars are being added at the source side, the signal appears as an HD 16:9 signal to the tuner and TV, neither has any idea the bars are there so there is no easy way to have it auto stretch the channel when SD programming is on. Simplest thing is to watch the SD version of the channel, not sure how hard that would be to drill into your kids minds though.
