that's incredible, I thought that the DirectTV and DTC100 with the 169time mod to it are the only was to records HDTV directly (in pure HDTV, not through the stand def down conv.)
I see that the mod 5000 + HDTV modulator are expensive.
are there any complications that I should know about beforehand?
Any places (cheap) you'd recommned to buy from?
The 169time mod does not let you record DirecTV HDTV, at least not yet. It will let you record your local OTA DTV stations.
The Dish 5000 w/HD Modulator will let you record Dish HDTV, if you have the rest of the right equipment. You must also have a way to acquire & store the data, like with a PC & HiPix card or a Panasonic TU-DST50/51 DTV tuner & PV-HD1000 DVHS VCR. The Panasonic equipment, along with the Dish 5000 & HD Modulator are all discontinued products. You can keep an eye on the AVS Classified Ads & Auctions, and also eBay. But that's about it.
And due to the rarity of the equipment, it's not cheap. The 5000 can be had for $300-$500, the HD Modulator starts at about $700 and goes up. A guess at the high water mark is around $2000 for the pair.
There are other DVHS recorders on the market, but the functionality with the Dish 5000 is uncertain.
