Quicktime Alternative and QT HD Trailers in Vista

So I just put together my new system (awesome!) and I've been trying to get all my software to work (less awesome). I was previously using XP 32bit and I've switched to Vista x64.

The one thing I just can't get working right now is Quicktime Alternative. I always loved it because it was so much more efficient than the actual Quicktime, only in Vista the Firefox browser integration just doesn't seem to want to work right.

Whenever I click one of those 480p, 720p or 1080p buttons on a QT trailer page, it pops up the regular Allow/Cancel nag-screen and then does absolutely nothing...

Anyone have any ideas about this? I tried Google but I came up with nothing.

I can't even download the trailers so it's not a question of which media player I'm using.

EDIT: The QT Alternative FAQ mentions this problem:

Q: I get a UAC message when I click on a button for a HD trailer. It does not start the MOV Download Tool.
A:

This problem may occur on Windows Vista. There are two solutions:

* Disable User Account Control (UAC).
* Go to "C:\\program files\\Quicktime Alternative\\". Right-click on "QuickTimePlayer.exe" (= MOV Download Tool). On the 'Compatibility' tab, you should enable "run this program as an administrator".

However, the second option does not work (nothing happens at all when I click HD links) and the first one would defeat the whole Vista improved security thing. So is there any other option?

I had Quicktime Alternative on my PC and if I clicked on a HD button a dialog appeared and allowed me to save the trailer. This no longers works! I'm not sure if it was a recent Vista security update or SP1 but it was working until a couple of weeks ago.

I'm running Vista Home Premium (32bit)

I was having the same problem as you were tonight. I followed the second option, and it worked for me.

When you right click on the QuickTimePlayer.exe file, did you go to properties, then compatibility, and click the "Run this program as administrator" check box? The first time I tried it, I only clicked the option when I first right-clicked on it, and that didn't do anything at all. It only worked by going through the properties function.

I just upgraded to Vista SP2 earlier today, so I don't think that's an issue.

As another option, this website may allow you to save the clips more easily:

HD-Trailers.net

Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 32-bit, Firefox 3.0.1, QuickTime Alternative 2.6.0

QuickTime Plug-in 7.5 works except when clicking on direct link to a QuickTime file. (File plays in embedded player if opened in a new tab)

UAC prompt is shown and nothing happens after clicking Allow. Enabling run as administrator option skips UAC prompt but still does nothing.

Try it with Internet Explorer, or run Firefox as administrator.
