Official Samsung LNxxA550 (Series 5) Owners Thread NO PRICE TALK! - Page 35

SO i got my tv. Movies look amazing. HD channels look great. Standard channels....
I plugged in the settings from the 1499 post. I could not find the part where it lists "My Color Control". I have no idea how to get to that part.

I have Cox Digital Cable. I've connected through both component and HDMI and did not notice a difference from the box. The box auto detects the tv I believe. It said 1080i when i plugged it in and turned it on.

Anyone know any tricks to get the standard channels to look better?

anything to add to that 1499 post? Especially for those using component cables in a usually not bright room?

thanks!

Hey All,
I hope I am not being too ignorant... First, I want to say, taking out some of the midrange frequency of the TV's sound settings have DRAMATICALLY improved the quality of the sound! A+ to those that tried it and let us all know! I, like many of you, have set up the TV based upon the infamous #1499 post. I have a few questions, why exactly is the "sharpness" setting so low? Also, are there any users out there with good color measuring equipment that have these sets? Clearly the numbers in #1499 are good for these sets, but I am sure there are some aspects that may be able to be improved upon if someone would share their experiences and setups with real color measuring equipment.

Thanks!

Tim

anyone know how this set compares to the previous generation. I don't mean spec wise, but consumer reports rated the 61f series one of the best.

They DO credit based on third party... I just called and they matched electronics expo's price, even though they charge $150 for shipping! Since I am already price talking I got mine originally for $XXXX with free shipping and now got $150 back by matching $1400, even though that $1400 requires $150 shipping! Go Amazon! For Xbox 360 if you want the image quality to look outstanding, giving you rich colors, great black levels, and accurate shadow detail, do the following. Expanded IRE can't be used, apparently, as the "blacker than black" test fails in this mode on the xbox. I think this is because the TV only supports 7.5 IRE and not 0 IRE sources, which sucks but in the end the picture is the same, and shadowy areas of COD4 and such will no longer look just black due to clipping of the signal.

ON YOUR 360:
-Plug your 360 into HDMI 2 (the one meant for DVI to HDMI) -- May work with HDMI 1 as well --
-Set the reference level on the purple blade's display settings to "Standard"
- I believe this sets the xbox to 7.5 IRE

ON YOUR SAMSUNG LCD:
-Label HDMI 2 "PC" or "Game" on the "sources" tab along the left side of your TV menu
- Use the pre-defined options, don't just name it "PC"
-Go to picture settings and reset them (last option), then use the following settings:

Picture
Picture mode: Standard
Contrast: 85-95
Brightness: 46
Backlight: 3-6
Detailed Settings
Dynamic Contrast: Low
Gamma: -1
White Balance
R-Offset 21
G-Offset 22
B-Offset 24
R-Gain 17
G-Gain 18
B-Gain 5
Picture Options
Color Tone: Normal
HDMI Black Level : Normal

Energy Saving: Off

The important things to note are:

-HDMI is named PC or Game
- Xbox 360 reference levels Standard

I used the AVIA DVD disc to adjust the brightness and used the rest of the settings from post 1499.

Anybody with a PS3 able to test crakarjax's settings? The PS3 also has full RGB colorspace options over HDMI (RDB Full Range (HDMI)) under Display Settings. While you are trying that give the (Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI)) setting a shot too, I have no clue what that is for but it might help with white levels or something.

I ordered mine yesterday and it was turned over to CEVA originating only about 4 hours north of where I live so maybe I will see it on Sat or Monday and I can try out the PS3 settings then but I would be interested to see what people find.

PS: crakarjax, you got extremely lucky with the third party price match. Amazon isn't supposed to do that and it says so on their website. The Post order price match "Applies only to items sold by Amazon.com, and not to items (or prices) offered by other sellers on our site."

Yep - I called earlier today expecting to get a $120 credit and wound up with over a $300 credit! I thought the rep had just made a mistake, but if you got it too, maybe that's their policy (even though that's not what it says on their website).

I'm still crossing my fingers until the credit shows up on the account however. Maybe we got the same clueless CS rep and her mgr is gonna void the credits after they're reviewed. Of course, that didn't stop me from spending my credit on a new pair of Athena WS100 speakers to replace my existing family room speakers (good deals on those too BTW). Figured, why not get some sleek speakers to go along with the TV.

Any of the owners of this TV that can attest for NO pixel problems? As you can probably tell from my previous posts I'm an absolute nut about bad pixels.

I've owned a Sammy LCD previously that I returned because of 4 bad pixels which is what originally pushed me into buying a Sammy plasma.

So, anybody had to return this set yet because of pixels??
Thanks!

EDIT: Oh and I'm currently rocking the HP-S4253 for anyone that was interested.

for me I bought from amazon direct. So I've been going by their prices.

I haven't tweaked the settings yet -- will probably start with post #1499 and work from there.

Ran the TVBlink greyscreen test, which torments all us Sharp owners, and just sat there staring at the paused greyscreen, drinking in the screen uniformity.

The sound seemed fine to me, but I'll be running through my 5.1 most of the time anyway.

So far, I couldn't be happier.

Drifter I bit the bullet and jumped the sharp boat as well. I got the set at the blue box store, after my sharp issues i didn't want to take the risk of returning a set. Went to blue box and haggled and got it for with in a couple c notes of big river. The comfort of being able to return it was worth it. Some may argue but i'm still a little skidish after my experience with sharp.

anyways, i'm really enjoying the set so far, I'm trying to get it calibrated using the 1499 settings and i'm close but still need somework. If anyone could show me some love and post their settings that were based off of the 1499 i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks Chef Jer

Has anyone tried watching a digital OTA channel on PIP?

I've used PIP and can only get analog OTA channels. I haven't tried with analog cable channels, but you can't get digital channels.

And I was disappointed that I can't get PIP when the main picture is from broadcast digital TV, only from an HDMI or other source. This is all in the manual. Still, I am really happy with my TV.

So I have the headphone jack thing to the red and white plug. Do I just plug that in? If so does it matter too much where?

That "some other plug" is also a "headphone"-type jack (3.5mm?). You just connect from there to your headphone jack on your laptop and the sound goes to the TV speakers. You'll need the male-to-male cable (3.5mm?) on both sides. It worked great for me.

So i've been playing around with my adjustments and i think i just hit a sweet spot. For the first time in a long time a tv has made me say wow.

Let us know what they are. I've used the "1499 post" settings and there is something not quite right with the red in peoples' faces and hands. Plus there are additional settings options that the 550 has that are not covered in the 1499 post.

I have a 5-series, but I assumed this would apply for the 5-series as well.

Is there any way to keep the "Channels" from showing up as you cycle through the source inputs? When I cycle through them, I get all the components I've hooked up to my TV but then I get a "snowy" input. I'd like this removed altogether because I'd never connect something via coax to my TV but it's still annoying that it's even there as an input.

So it's not just me who thinks the 550 kills the Sharp! I spent most of the 2 weeks I had the Aquos trying to convince myself the PQ was great and the banding didn't bother me. This one make me say WOW. Watched "Mr. Magorium's Magic Emporium" on BluRay and colors were popping all over the place!

And I too got the price adjustment from Amazon to the 3rd party with the current lowest price so it's definitely worth a shot to those of you who bought through them.

hey guy with 46a550.
last night I notice a noticeable buzz from the right speaker! not from the backlight. I know it has to deal with the cable box b/c I tried switch a/v inputs. Called up Comcast said tv adn box are interfering with each other. I must have the cable volume higher than the tv volume. I didn't need to do the day before.

Mine is at 95% cable volume and 10-15% tv volume.
But I was wonder what your guys volume levelS were.

anyone want to post their settings for 360 over VGA? i can't quite get the color right. they still looked a little washed out. not very vibrant...

I was up until 2:30am watching tv last night and i had to force myself to go bed. I just got up after 6 hrs sleep because i have the day off and want to play with my new toy.

Some of my hd is kinda grainy, nothing to do with the tv my sharp had this also its a fault of crapcast(no grainess on bluray). I think i'm gonna exchange my hd box and see if that helps (cablebox also makes a constant humming noise that is starting to drive me nuts). If not i may order directtv today.

Drifter in the time I had my sharp i could never get it to pop like this sammy and I've only been playing with it since last night

Just ordered the TV from Amazon, can't wait to get it. I unfortunately got a better informed customer service agent because he wouldn't credit based on electronics expo's price. Oh well, still a great price for the TV.

Hi everyone, been going through this thread for a few days now and I finally picked up a 40" 550 !!

Looking forward to tweaking the settings when I get home.

@ first I purchased the new LG 37" b/c I was debating between that & the 37" samsung (since the primary use will be for PC use) and I went w/ the LG (to save a $100...BIG mistake!), but the darn thing literally shut on & off every 10 minutes while gaming & watching movies.

So my local BB didn't have any 37" samsungs available so I went ahead and went w/ the 40"

Going to try out the infamous 1499 post =D

cheers!
BTW, when i bought my 46a550 last night the guy at best buy told me that the 550 is selling much better than the 650. The samsung rep had been in that day and they had been discussing it. The rep felt it was because the 550 was at a better price point when comparing features and price.

Cool I found a cable in my box of cables and it worked real nice. Thanks.

I wish I could remap the TV button so it went to component 1 (my cable box) instead of the tv coax input where nothing is hooked up.

Also, the standard channels look ok. It took me a while to get the sizing right (normal on cable box and fit on tv). I plugged in post 1499 and it's ok. If anyone has an upgrade to that It'd be much appreciated. (i don't have an xbox so it'd be for standard, hd, dvd (upconverted), and my lil wii.)

Thanks.

Thx, that's what I was fearing. One thing that has to come to mind though, is that I will be using a HTPC to plug into my tv. I'm thinking about getting a tv tuner and splitting the signal, one into the tv, and one into the HTPC. Then, when I want to watch TV only, I'll do it directly, and when I want to do PC, I'll do it directly, with the possibility of opening another window on the "computer screen" for the TV.
