Official Samsung LNxxA550 (Series 5) Owners Thread NO PRICE TALK! - Page 65

When I first hooked my PS3 up to my Aquos via HDMI, I had the green screen (on the dashboard) all of the time. I searched endlessly to see if it was a known issue and couldn't find anything, so I was convinced there was something wrong even though it went away when I would load a game or movie. Finally realized I didn't have the TV set to automatically detect whether the HDMI signal was RGB or YCC 4:4:4, and the problem went away. So I'd agree that it's just that you're catching the set switching formats.

On a somewhat related note, I found out that CEVA picked up my TV in Harrisburg PA early yesterday evening, so I should hopefully have it much sooner than Amazon's estimate of April 30 (I am right outside Washington DC). CEVA is estimating the 28th right now, but I am hoping they'll even beat that. Now I am just sitting here crossing my fingers that I don't have any significant banding, because otherwise I am really excited to get this set.

I can't decided between the : Panasonic 50pz85u, Samsung FP-T5084, Samsung LN52A550. I was at best buy yesterday and I actually noticed a size difference between a 50" and 52". I want big but very good quality without spending to much money
My brain hurts.. I should just go back to good ole crt sd tubes and leave HD alone...<---heck no..

I honestly don't know why buying a TV is so hard. It's very alienating to the customer sometimes. That's one of the first things you learn in business is that TOO much product diversity causes confusion and poor sales.

If I didn't spend so much time on these forums, I'd be very confused. It's like I told somebody the other day though, just try to pick something that's really popular and that seems to be selling really well and follow the trend. Because somebody probably knows something about that set that you don't lol.

Samsung alone currently has 46 LCD Tvs listed here.

http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/s...&subtype=lcdtv

This doesn't include any of their other lines. I'm sure the other major manufacturers are very similar. You just have to dive in.

I got curious so I went and counted lol, I know I have too much time on my hands.

The count goes:
Samsung
LCDs:46
Plasmas:15
DLPs:11
Slimfits:2

Granted some of those are last years models, that's still a lot of screens. Which line do you think is bringing the most profit??
post #1924 of 8379
There are not professional reviews of lcd, plasma and dlp tv's. I would be nice of I can google a 2008 model lcd and get a damn good review (the good, the bad, the ugly) but sites like cnet, zdnet, audioholics, etc. do not review a lot of the tv's that are on sale today.
Even going to a store and trying to compare the TVs is difficult (can't really judge some TVs cause of the bad setting).
Thank the lord of AVSforums.

Tulsa - congrats on the set your gonna love it.

Cripsy - i've had sometime with your settings and i find i'm getting a little to much green tint and their a little bright for me. Overall i really like them and lowered the tint to 55/45 and that seemed to alleviate the green. i also upped the contrast to 94 and lower the backlight to 5/6.

I'm also jumping back and forth between these settings on movie and applied to standard (with color tone set to normal). I'm still playing but your settings where a great starting point Thanks again Cripsy and please be sure to thank your friend for me.

Well I am a first timer for a HD LCD flat panel screen. Me and my fiance decided on the Samsung 40A550 after looking at a lot of others. We were trying for the 42A450 but they were out so I guess I am glad we didn't get it and got this one.

I have to say I am amazed. We watched Good Luck Chuck, on DVD, last night and I was amazed. I have the TV hooked up to my PC through my second DVI port to HDMI port 2. I also decided to try gaming on it since I have a nice rig and played TF2 at 1920x1080 and was just in shock. I was also suprised at how fast it played since it has a 5ms response compared to my LCD's 8ms.

I also used the audio and video settings from here and it just looks great. I finally get FOX, which I never could on a normal TV especially soince I don't use cable/satellite.

But this is a great TV. Anyone who wants a new one should get this one. And though the sound may not be the best you can always get a nice set of high quality PC speakers from say Creative and hook them up for some great sound.

Yeah Jimmy your audio idea is actually a pretty good one. I remember before I got an AVR (Onkyo 605), I used to use a stereo deck for audio. I would simply plug the red/white audio cables from the TV into the stereo and have much better stereo sound. That's an idea too.

Response to #1921. Buying a new TV should not cause pain but it does. I am on my fourth TV in two months and I finally have the right one. It is an LN-T5265F mfg date 01-31-08. I am using Dynamic mode, contrast 84, brightness 50, sharp 50, tint50, backlight 7 and color tone cool 1. I will say that the PQ will match any other HD pic. What ever you buy don't get carried away with all of these messages on calibrations and trying to find the perfect PQ, you will go nuts. Just start with the factory settings and adjust to suit your viewing taste.

I've been checking tracking several times during the day in the stupid hope that it will get here faster! I ordered on Monday and have the same delivery estimates as you do (both from Amazon and CEVA). My hope is that they are making a straight delivery to Atlanta (in which case it should be there tonight) and then I can get it either tomorrow or Thursday,

Can't believe I am so excited/nervous about this!

50 inches vs 52 inches.. how much viewing area (in percent) would 2 inches gain you?
P.S. I suck at math...

Cactus - i have to disagree with you on this. Most of us did a great deal of research before buying these sets and are willing to do a little more work to get the most out of our purchase. to each their own though

My recommendation to anyone who just bought this set is to start with cripsy's settings and to fine tune them to your tv and your taste. It's not difficult and in the end it will improve an already terrific set.
post #1936 of 8379
You gain about 41.65 square inches of viewing area going from 50" to 52" diagonal.

Kevon all I can tell you is that it's noticeable. I went from my 42" plasma down to my 40" 550 and it was such a change that it made me go back and order the 46". It's wasn't terrible, but just enough that it bugged me.

But if you've never had the 52 and never gotten used to the bigger size, it probably wouldn't make much of a difference to you.

No, I dont think so!

The box is huge...

My 52" comes on Friday. Thanks to everyone for the information and help. I hope I like it, but the deal I'm getting on it seems very good for a high-quality set at this size. It's still like $500 for me to move up the 650, and I just don't think I need what little the buys me or that I'd be happy with the bezel for having paid extra for it.

Thanks for the calibration numbers, too...I'll have to give those a try as a guideline.

I concur. I don't think that box would fit in the back of any 4 door sedan. Maybe if you took the TV out and sat it in the back seat and collapsed the box. But I really don't recommend that.

My main concern is motion blur and artifacts...the 650 did not exhibit this, but I got mixed readings on the 550.

Bump.

Everything I've seen and read about the 550 I like. I want to order soon (i.e, now) but this is the one question I don't have a satisfactory answer to yet.

Could any of the 550 owners who game a lot chime in here? Thanks.

The relationship between the area A of a rectangle with sides a and b and its diagonal L is:

A = ab
A = L(a/L)*L(b/L)
A = LL(a/L)(b/L)

for a 16x9 screen,
a/L = 16/sqrt(16*16 + 9*9) = 16/sqrt(337)
b/L = 9/sqrt(16*16 + 9*9) = 9/sqrt(337)

(a/L)(b/L) = 16*9/337 = 144/337
A = LL(144/337)
Therefore, if L changes by 52/50, A changes by (52/50)(52/50) = 1.0816.
This would be an 8.16% increase in area.

lol, you sound like a cave-man. No offense though, just funny.

By the way I'm loving my 46a550. Starz HD has been one of my favorite channels as of late. Cars and Rattatouille look so incredible on Starz! Also, I at first thought that 46 inches was too big, viewing from about 7 feet. However, after a few weeks of getting used to it, I think that I could definetly go bigger!! Lol, I would suggest to anyone that the bigger model is usually the better, you won't regret going bigger.

In the one week I've owned the 550, I've never noticed any blurring or smearing. I've played a lot of Mass Effect and most recently some Halo 3, and it looks great. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Amen brother. That's why the 40" just went back for the 46".
