Official Samsung LNxxA550 (Series 5) Owners Thread NO PRICE TALK! - Page 3

It seems that samsung has tried to create new lines that matched their old lines.

xx42 -> series 3 (6 ms, 720p, 8000:1)
xx53 -> series 4 (6 ms, 720p, 10000:1)
xx61/65 -> series 5 (5 ms, 1080p, 30000:1)
xx71 -> series 6 (4 ms, 1080p, 50000:1, 120 hz)

series 7 is somewhere above xx71, but so far unsure if its like the xx81, or if that will be replaced by the "series 9", and this is only an upgraded 6.

those are the basic features, its obviously more complex than that.

Thanks for the links on page one. I read through them and did a little on my set, however, since I am not an TV guru, it is hard for me to see that much of a difference. Yes there is some difference, but not enough to do what my 1 year old son does "WWWOOOWWW!"

I can tell you guys this: It is a great improvement over what I did have and the colors are amazing! I too was torn between an 120Mhz and non-120Mhz. In fact I was looking at the LNT4671F before I was reading these articles in here and found out about the new ones. That is when I did some research and found them for sale and ordered it online. I was watching some of the NCAA games this weekend on it and to me, I can't see any difference in the screen. Meaning, I do not see the blurring or ghosting that some sets have. Just some great B-Ball games. I guess I will have to wait and see what some of you post as your setting and see if they will work for me or not.

I would post some pictures, however, I am not that computer savvy enough to know how. I will try and get my wife to do it when we get some and then you guys can tell me if the setting are good or not.

How was fast-action ball movement and such? Any slowness or blocking?

OMG (The following is probably a stupid post but whatever)

Ok so you know there are 2 versions of the 5 series: the 550 and 530. Now it seems they are identical except the 530 has a different design (from the manual, looks kind of like a cross between the 65/71 designs), it HAS touch sensitive controls, but does NOT have wiselink (USB for photos/mp3s).

WTF! The 550 is the higher-end model, but why does the lower-end model have touch sensitive controls (that is a really cool feature and should be on the higher end model!) I really think they switched the designs for some reason! So do I choose touch sensitive controls or USB? I DONT KNOW!

Hmmmm, had not heard of the 530. I'm not certain this model will be available in the USA. Could not find any more info on google either.
post #67 of 8397
Well i emailed a Canadian retailer (2001 Audio Video) and they told me both the 550 and 530 would be available in Canada... the 550 (at least the 40" size, not sure about the other sizes) will be a Futureshop exclusive model while the 530s will be carried elsewhere (i.e. 2001 Audio Video!)... they said a $1799 CDN MSRP for the 40A530.

Now i'm not sure how often Canada gets an exclusive model over the U.S... not too often is my guess lol.

So all of these Series 5 are 1080p - even the 32" and 37" - can someone confirm this?

Yes, Series 5 are all 1080p. I don't think you'll see any noticeable difference though on screens under 40".

Hey Sean, how you enjoyin' the TV so far. Have you had a chance to look at the new color space feature (p. 20 of the manual)? It differs from the '71 series white balance adjustments in that it appears to have Photoshop-like selective color capabilities. Can you comment on this?
post #72 of 8397
How is the triple ball effect on these TV's. And is there a big difference not have the Auto Motion Plus 120Hz with these TV. I will be watching allot of hockey and boxing, and some xbox360 games, and allot of action movies on this TV. I would love to see some shoots of this TV in detail like some did with the 71 series..

Just played around with that for a bit and it looks like it'll give you great control over the colors and allow you to fine-tune and calibrate things perfectly.

Unfortunately I'm not good at that type of stuff though, so I'm not the best person to ask. I have color space set to 'Auto' at the moment and it looks fine to me.

I did not notice any at all. Now all I have hooked up are component cables for now. Waiting on my HDMI cables to come in from Monoprice.

There was a comment about the remote not lighting up I believe, however, that is wrong. The remote does light up and you can read the button/menu very well. One thing that is a little annoying is that it plays this little song at when you turn it on and off. The same song my Samsung washer and dryer play when the cycle is complete. In a couple of weeks I am going to mount it on the wall. Read a few post here and it does not seem that hard. However, I would like to know what people are using to get the cord fished?

You can turn that off (p.58 manual)

So i think I'm going to get the 32" 550. The 1080p will work great as a PC monitor and TV. Problem is, NOONE has them available yet

Yep that was the very first thing I did after turning on my TV and hearing that stupid noise. I think it sounded like little kids laughing or something. My older Samsung TV had a much nicer melody.

Best Buy has them but not in stock. Just bought a 46" 5 Series and they say its in their warehouse for pick up on thursday...

can't wait.

If someone in the Los Angeles area want the 550 it is available at Fry's locally.I saw a huge pallet packed with LN52A550's at the Burbank store today.

but I'm just about to pull the trigger on a 5271. I'm assuming this will be discontinued (if not already)? And are the 5/6 series sets supposed to be an improvement? The 5271 seems to have been one of the better products in terms of value and lack of issues, I almost hate to take on a new product. Can you guys enlighten me? Thanks....

If you are thinking about the new A650 model (120Hz), there is an owner thread with pictures of that new set, http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1007540.
post #84 of 8397
Well, how do any of the owners of these sets rate this TV? Tell us something, anything... How are the blacks? What do you think about the picture quality? Sound? Let the info flow...
post #85 of 8397
Nothing all day? I was ready to buy tomorrow and wanted to hear some feedback on this series....sigh.
post #86 of 8397
So, all the owners of this set really like it, too busy enjoying it to post? That can happen, I understand how that could be. So you really like the set, nice blacks, clear, sharp PQ? No problems to report.
post #87 of 8397
I saw this set in the store, and the blacks on it looked very good actually. I am used to a gloss screen, so the matte screen made it looked a little hazy, but it seems like a nice TV.

That's the kind of info I was hoping to get from some of the owners. I have two 71's with the gloss screen and boy you do get black with that. I just want a 550 owner to report what they think. Please...

The blacks are really good - I don't think they're quite as "inky" and dark as the 71 is but it compares favorably to almost every other TV I've seen at Circuit City. Picture quality is also great and it has lots of calibration options.

I'm not a fan of sound quality from TV speakers, so I didn't like the audio - probably the weakest aspect of this TV. There are lots of sound options too though which I never bothered with them since I've got a 5.1 setup.

Also my set had none of the issues that people are experiencing with the 650 ("flashlights"/clouding, random power-offs, etc).

Well, there you go... Thanks Sean. I may just get one of these for my office to watch games and stuff when i get kicked-off the other TV's.

AMP and the 120Hz thing has just been a royal pain with my 71's so I am not sure I really want the 650.

So PQ is good? Mostly you are a happy owner, correct? Thanks...
