Sounds like a homer comment to me. I seriously doubt it will BLOW IT AWAY. It may end up being better but the XF550 is getting solid reviews from the earlier adopters.

From all I can gather here on AVSForum, the Toshiba 52XF550 has a Samsung panel.... I own one and there is no wash-out from the sides at all...

I see your posts from other threads and if I were trying to make a decision on which unit to buy, I would disregard anything you offer as an opinion, as I don't think you've seen the new models of all the brands on the market....

bigjsd has it right..... "Samsung homer"

Finnpong,

Until this weekend I had decided to buy the 52A550, but after reading the XF550 thread and seeing the Toshiba LCD this weekend I started to rethink my decision. I watch a lot of movies and sports, but don't play any games. Will I regret my decision if I buy a 60HZ LCD instead of 120HZ? I don't like the soap opera effect in movies, so the only time I would want the 120HZ feature enabled is when I watch sports.

Probably wanna take this over to the Tosh XF550 thread, I was just responding regarding the misinformation TheBeginning was giving out....

My take is Samsung is much better...

Seen to many Toshibas returned at BB, CC, Fry's and even Costco.
Samsung has a pretty solid track record for reliability.

I would not say thebeginning is misinformed. He might not like Toshiba for the same reasons I don't. Plus he might know a few people with them. It's strictly an opinion, but consumers always have the better opinions then ratings. For one is because they own the set, or have owned the companys sets before.

Buy a PS3 for bluray sake or Sound system?
I'm looking at the Sony HT CT-100 for a clean look. I guess I'll decide pending my tv arrival today if I need to boost the sound or have blu ray (only got reg dvd player).
Eventually both, but what first...

I would get the Blu Ray player first, and build the sound system as you can.

Just got my 46a550 delivered....
1 Guy with an EGL van... No problems though.... He opened the box and set it on the stand.... Works great!

PQ is much better than my Westinghouse was... LV42W2 (forget exact model.. the 1080p set)... Much more pop then the Westinghouse....
Speakers are passable... I did hook up my old Pioneer receiver to the Audio out on the TV, just in case Im not satisfied with the sound during a game or movie.... I have 2 small kids though, and a wife that could care less about Audio, so I'll leave it this way for the time being...
All in all.. very happy with the set.... the added HDMI ports are key!
Have Fios DVR set to HDMI1, PS3, set to HDMI2, and Toshiba HD-DVD set to HDMI3. All (except PS3 ofcourse) controlled via Harmony 676... Used 4665f TV setting in the remote...
For $1551 shipped with no tax, its a great buy!!!

Well, he should note that buying a bluray player means buying bluray dvds too which will be purchased more frequently than if he was getting a basic sound system. The audio can be updated as needed and appears as a 1 time purchase making it easier to save up for the second.

That's my take and what I would do.
Yeah, maybe he saw the "550" bit in the thread, and thought it was the Toshiba 550, and not the Samsung 550. Well, look at the brand before posting, TheBeginning. Those are two different breeds of LCD right there...

Try setting, in the xbox display settings, the "reference level" option to "expanded", this will make the colors more vibrant. The setting sets the correct black level, as TVs and monitors are made using different reference black levels.

Also, playing with your contrast ratio can help with the "washed out" look, but consider that you might just be too used to images that are "too contrasty" or have too much "pop" as people like to say. I personally prefer the washed out look with VGA, because the colors seem more realistic to me. Check out COD4, there are some realistic scenes that will give you an idea of whether the image looks as it should or not.

Hello,

For those of you who have the 46" version of this set... Does the screen have the glossy finish, like the 4665 set, or is it a matte finish like the 4661 set?

Thanks!

Pics of the media center menu from X-box 360 over HDMI.

Edit: It is clearer than in the picture. When I resized it it seems to have gotten a little fuzzy.

Yep it is the same the series the thread is refering to. I ordered the 40" from Dixons for £849.99 ($1671). I'm have a few doubts about whether it was worth spending the money for the new series or if I should have gone for the predecessor. You just missed out on the deals they were doing at Dixon's by one day. They knocked £150 off the TV, it was originally £999.99.

Can't comment about PS3 usage, but maybe it's worth checking out the Panasonic 32" 100hz (120hz) models. Or even the Panasonic TX-32LXD70 from Richer Sounds for £500.

It may seem silly to ask, is your 360 up to date? I thought one of the last updates corrected vga issues like that one...

Can anyone please comment on how blu-ray movies look on the a550, specifically fast moving action movies and the like. I have been watching nascar, baseball, basketball, hockey, etc..., and have noticed little to no motion blur or anything to distract from the fast action. Hopefully the same goes for Blu-ray movies with fast action scenes. Thanks in advance!

Blu ray discs can be rented. And they upconvert rather nicely. And it is complete instantly, whereas a (good) sound system takes time. Either way, you cannot go wrong. Just the audio path will take longer to enjoy.

One could argue motion blur is possible on anything, but the 550 so far with my PS3 has been working just fine and dandy. I was just watching Cloverfield today, and I was very worried about blur. Surprise! Nothing major to complain about. Motion blur was my biggest concern when purchasing this set, considering I have been through 3 Sharp lcds, 1 Sony lcd, 1 Panny Plasma, 1 Samsung lcd, and I am happy so far. I admit I am over-sensitive to blurring, this set is one of the best to handle it so far. My opinion.

I was just reading what was written, and it seems he knew the difference. Might wanna browse over it again
post #921 of 8378
does this tv have the wide color option?
yeah agree, but is 100hz or 120hz gona make a hell of alot of difference, ive seens samsungs, their good sets, not to shabby and the sony is well not going to be as good as this im sure, not sure if 100hz will matter to much what does it do, its the only tv spec im not sure would help, but they are saying lack of blur, as in handleing that well which is good, id be happy to pay 750, but i can get it for 630 from dixons, which is a good price for a 1080p set

As I stated in my previous posts I know the difference between Samsung A550 and Toshiba XF550. Is it a fair comparison? No, since Samsung is 60HZ and Toshiba is 120HZ. I wanted to know if it was worth spending extra money for a 120HZ set. The question I asked was if I would regret not owning an LCD with 120HZ. I didn't compare the Toshiba to the Samsung A650 because it has a glossy screen.

At this point I'm still undecided. Everyone who owns a A550 or XF550 are very happy with there sets. The only complaint I've seen is with the sound quality on the A550.

E.Mode:

I was experimenting with the various e.mode settings last night. So far, the "game" mode was pretty good for X-box 360 over HDMI.

Thanks for the info peanut! Good to hear that there are no major issues. Now I just can't wait to get my PS3! May 22nd (my birthday) seems like a LONG ways off. Maybe I can get the wife to buy my PS3 a little early, lol.

+1. these are two sets i'm debating on. i'm also considering spending less and settling for the Toshiba XV540. so right now, my options are:
Samsung 40A550
Samsung 46A530
Toshiba 42XV540
Toshiba 40XF550

Ah, did you miss the other 4 dozen times this was covered in this thread?

Justin
Yes, I believe that the screen was right in the middle of matte AND glossy, it's not too much of either, just the right amount for giving that picture some "pop" but not too overly shiny, just enough for the best pictures at all times of the day, and all light conditions.

God, I hate the Harmony software.

When I add a 4617F there is no input for TV. How do you get it to switch to TV mode?
So, I've been testing out the tv all night long and watching American Idol on HD is beautiful, esp. Kristy Lee Cook through QAM.
I decided to go with the PS3 b/c of my or lack of upconvert dvd player. Thanks for your input, but the PQ is more important to watch DVDs than sound for now. The SD channels are good, but I have yet to get my HD box (tomorrow).
I must admit to the sound it is what everyone is saying but is still livable.
Can't wait to get 1080p signals in this puppy.
Well I haven't really examined the screen but I think it's more towards the matte side than glossy side. I'll have to check again in daylight.
Oh, I'm about 15' from the TV is great, but definitely 52" would of fit the room. Oh well just gotta move the TV closer...esp. at the price I got.
