What term denotes HDMI switching capabilities?

My apologies if this is something that's oft-answered, but I looked through the forums and didn't find an answer.

I've been looking at receivers all morning after finding out that my current setup won't allow for my devices to output 5.1 sound. (See here for why I cried myself to sleep last night.)

I'm looking to be able to hook up multiple devices to my TV through HDMI (my current setup consists of a PS3, Wii and DVD player through a poorly made external component switch/hub, Xbox 360 through VGA, and cable box through HDMI). My TV has only a single HDMI port, and I figured that if I could get a receiver that would let me get my 5.1 sound AND act as a HDMI switch for my PS3, cable box and maybe one other device, then I should go for it. But after looking for literally the past four hours at various receivers, I cannot for the life of me determine which are capable of HDMI switching without having someone make a note of it in reviews.

So my question is: Is there some term that says "This box allows for HDMI switching, not JUST the ability to pass HDMI signals onto the TV"?

Thanks!

If a receiver has multiple HDMI inputs, you can switch between them.
If the question is whether a receiver can process audio over HDMI,and not just pass the video, that is a different matter.Nearly all HDMI capable receivers can, with a few exceptions.

Yes, sorry about that but that would be my question. I've come across quite a few receivers that seem incapable of passing audio, but perhaps that's because I've been looking at sub-$500 receivers?

There are a lot of receivers in that price range that do-the Sony 810 and 910,the Yamaha 661,etc.
Also, remember that the receiver will have optical/coax ins for more ways to get 5.1 sound.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm looking at the 810 right now, and I think I'm going to purchase one unless something else suddenly jumps up.

Thanks again.

Take a look at the new Yamaha receivers! The RX-V663 will is a two input HDMI 1.3 receiver. It can handle the decoding of all the new audio codecs as well as doing 7.1 channels of LCPM. I should get mine this week from jr.com($400 even no shipping and they don't collect tax).

Yamaha also has a few models below that that do audio over HDMI. However, their lowest models are strictly for HDMI passthrough. At $400 there is no better choice than the RX-V663.

^^^ No better choice ...??? The 810 has the basic functionality of the 663 along with 3 HDMI inputs and costs considerably less than the 663. JMO

The Yamaha is leaps and bounds better than the 810 though. Especially in terms of sound quality and build quality.

I guess that means you double blind tested these AVRs and documented the results that substatiate your claim. Probably not. Seriously, I posted my response because I get tired of reading broad, unsubstantiated, overarching claims like "No better choice...", "...leaps and bounds better...", "...unmitigated POS...", etc that really add nothing meaningful to a discussion whether the discussion is about Sony, Yamaha or any other manufacturer's gear. Wow I didn't know the 810 has pre-outs, analog to HDMI up conversion, and OSD over HDMI. That does sound like there is no better choice than the Sony then!

It is considerably less than the Yamaha. Personally, I don't see it as the equivalent though!
