OFFICIAL SHARP BANDING THREAD (all models) - Page 6

My better half can see your problem clearly on the Picard shot and says you shouldn't have any qualms in going about getting it rectified. Thank goodness we don't have the issue, knock on wood.

Bought the 52D64U at CC on May 27th, just returned it and exchanged it for the Samsung LN52A550. Banding is "nearly" non-existent on the Sammy. So far I am pleased with the switch. The 64U has a HUGE horizontal (3") band that showed horribly during sea, sky and snow (OR HGTV Home Shows)! Couldn't bear it anymore. The 4ms is a little better (64U) than the Sammy's 5ms, but oh well, the Sharp's banding was driving me NUTS! Too bad because the looks/design of the Aquos beat the 550, picture was sharp, blacks were good on the Aquos.

I'm through with Sharp!

Sharp have been outstanding - i mean that.... Called them Friday, sent pictures over the weekend - even got a response saying they would look at it. They called back Tuesday with 2 options. They would send a refurb or I can take this one back to Brandsmart and get a new one - they will sort directly with them. Bonus....I just called Brandsmart who said they don't have, and don't stock the 92U, they only have the 94U in stock...So with any luck, that will be my replacement unit - will let you know in the next couple of days

No, it is definitely not the backlight. Putting on my former LCD Field Apps Engineer hat I would guess it's from an uneven cell gap. That is probably caused by some coating on the glass that does not have a uniform thickness.

Even taking into account the videophile sensibilities in evidence here and some people no doubt gaming system to their advantage with exchanges and upgrades, there seems to be still problems cropping up, including so-called banding. So it's a risk. I would limit my consideration to other brands until Sharp starts to produce products that pass screen uniformity tests of the reviewers, not before. To date they haven't accomplished this. I'm also disappointed that apparently Sharp is not exchanging with problem free sets to satisfaction of some posters on AVS. Also be aware that Sony plans on using Sharp panels in very near future based on well publicized agreement that has been reached between the two companies.

It is refreshing to read such honesty from a Sharp owner of a banded line, even though yours is a good one. I think your advice [in bold] is very worthy of consideration. It appears that progress has been made since the d62 debacle, particularly in the SE series, yet problems remain.

Obviously Sharp has decided to live with this fundamental defect and continue to crank out this garbage (with some exceptions) and to Hell with their reputation among people who have more advanced knowledge about HDTV, such as many of the forum members. It is truly a shame, since they entered the market ablaze with the hottest new LCD products of the time, then after the d90 line traded in quality for production speed.

These days Samsung is making terrific panels, the semi-matte 550 60 hz is amazing and very economical (I got a 52" for <1800) and if you can put up with gloss the 650/750 120hz is another good choice. People seem to be raving about the Toshiba 550 series, which are Sammy 550? panels. The colors on these sets have advanced to the point where the Sharp advantage is no longer there from what I have seen. They are both (the Sammy and the Sharp) excellent in that department, but the uniformity issue remains a critical aspect of LCD flat panel, and without passing this most fundamental test one cannot seriously consider a Sharp as being a competitive set (unless you get an exceptionally clean set, which as you say is a roll of the dice at this point, although the odds are improving).

Does the LC42D64U have banding issues also? My budget is around 1700$ and at bestbuy they sell the LC42D64U 42" for 1699$ and u get a free sourround sound system with it. Is it worth it? Or should i try to find another TV that has no banding?
All the Samsung sets I've seen so far are pitch black dark in the middle and brighter on the edges on a really dark scene. I've seen banding on many sets, other than some (as in "not all of them") Sharp, like the Toshiba's.

Hello all,

Just was looking for some clarification and definition of my problem with my Sharp.

I have a Sharp LC-32DA5U which is under extended warranty at The Brick in Canada (don't shop for anything there...they will totally screw you). I am sure this isn't the same issue as banding and I think it is called "pillaring" but I just wanted some clarification if you'd be so kind. (pic below)

The problem occurs on similar background as many people list for their banding tests, however the problem ONLY occurs on the HDMI input, so I am pretty sure this isn't banding as it isn't related to the backlight or the glass.

I am being told that it is a compatibility issue and that it isn't covered under my extended warranty...problem is that the TV is the compatibility problem...it doesn't work with ANY HDMI device connected to it (I have tried over 10). They all exhibit the same issue. I was also able to reproduce the exact same problem on the 32" Aquos model that came directly after mine...so clearly it is a problem with Sharp's HDMI decoding or something like that.

You should see 3 sets of two lines vertically down the length of the TV. They are darker than the rest of the background. The mouse pointer is between two sets of lines. Can someone let me know what this problem might be called and if there is any possible solution for it. (tried a zillion cables and many, many different HDMI devices...all look the same).

Thanks for your time and input.

hi

So I got my 52SE94U yesterday. Set it up and watched some channels, and everything looked ok. The I slid in the tvblink dvd and watched the screen go grey and lo they were all there...
The sample videos' did not show much banding or rather I did not focus a lot on them.

Next I guess I need to find actual video clips which I can use to demo to sharp that I have a problem with banding. All the pictures I see here are "grey" screens I am really looking for video clips which show the banding.

Can anyone point to some youtube video's or the alike which show banding on the set ?

Also is there a way to calibrate the set so as to see minimal banding ?

I have the exact same problem as
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...09&page=27#792
with the 3/4 inch horizontal band, and it seems that the sharp tech could go into the service mode. and fix the problem. I dont seem to have vertical bands. Has anyone gone through a similar service ?

There is no better movie than the "Mist" for showing the banding in my opinion. All the grey mist throughout the movie does the trick. Also a good movie was "We own the night" when they burn the grass towards the end of the movie. The smoke makes the bands pop right out.

I just got the 52se94u about two weeks ago from Dell and what do you know it had horizonal banding and some sort of dark spot at the top middle of the screen. Dell brought me a replacement set yesterday and it also has banding, no more dark spot though. You would think if you are returning a product for a certain defect they would test to make sure your replacement does not have the same defect, what a joke. I believe they just dont care they will continue to not fix this problem sell them as they are beting that most will not even know this a defect in their set.
Im on the fence now as to what to do. Return this set again and just get a sony, the next best set dell sells, or wait till sharp comes out with something better and band free. It really sucks because once you notice it it is very apparent.
Call Sharp and let them swap it out. After you go through a few if you don't find a satisfactory model, get your money back. The only way to get them to fix it is to hit their pocketbook. If people buy them and keep them, they will keep selling 'em.

No place to vote for a "93" (LC65D93U) so I voted "no banding" under "94".
You guys kinda scare me with all these banding stories, i was about to buy a LC65D64U (65" Aquos) especially for the new hockey season coming up, but now i don't know if i should anymore... i don't want to spend 4 grand to see some image banding issue during a hockey game

What's the best choice for me on the market right now for around 4,000$? (I need a screen larger than 52")
You're pretty much screwed since only Sharp is going bigger than 52" (excluding the few 55" sets on the market).

Is there a thread on here, where i can ask everybody what would be best for my money?

I'm looking to buy the tv within a month, my budget is 4k.

I don't really care what the brand is really... i just want a big screen full hd with no image banding issue.

Just start your own thread.

BTW, your pic is very similar to the first pic in the d92 thread long ago that had people so excited that Sharp had fixed the problem. That pic turned out to be too bright and hid the banding that appeared in the entire d92 line.

For those of us who have followed this saga for a long time, there have been a few owners that claimed to have no bands but have refused to provide proof in pictures. All others have stated they have banding and/or have shown bands. Therefore, at this point, it is perfectly reasonable to ask for proof if someone claims to have a band free Sharp set. If you take offense at the challenge to provide proof, sorry about that, I would just like to see a single case of a truly band free set but none yet has been proven to exist, NONE. So unless you provide proof, your claim does not carry much weight based on the long history of this problem. I'm sure that if people's claims such as yours were really true, pictures would have been provided long ago. The only logical explanation is that your claim is likely to be false.

You don't even know how band free his set is. Belief is not the same as reality.

I went through three sets until I finally got a good one. None of my sets had banding, they had dead pixels.

Since you demand proof here it is:

Bear in mind the act of taking the picture degrades the image. The set looks much better in person.
FWIW, there is some slight banding in that picture, but it's better than a lot of the pictures other people have posted.
I see no banding on the set. I have watched Hi Def Hockey, Blu Ray Planet Earth Arctic episodes and detect no issues at all.

I know these sets have issues, this particular 92U is close to flawless.

Don't get a Sharp (any size, especially 65") if you want it for hockey games. When the set pans across the ice, you are going to see banding. It will range between minor banding to major banding, but you will definately see banding watching hockey games. Hockey games in particular (with the ice panning) really make the banding problem pop out.

I watched the entire Stanley Cup Playoffs last year on my 92U and had no banding.

I also see banding in that set. Two 3-inch vertical bands clearly, and a couple more slight 1-2 inch bands. They are minor, but they are there.

I used to try and convice myself that my Sharps didn't have banding. But over time either the banding got worst, or I knew where the bands where and my eyes kept getting drawn to them.

So back to Costco I went, and dumped them for full return credit. Since I was grandfathered into Costco's old unlimited return policy.

Keep telling yourself that. I told myself that for over a year and a half. I had two Sharp 52" with minor banding. But over time I got sick of it and dumped them.

I defended Sharp for a long time, but now I am through with them.

The set does fall down slightly on SD programming but it is an excellent set, as I said I watched alot of Hockey on it last year and there was nothing to complain about.

I am no Sharp apologist. I dealt with the return of three sets and SIX BD20U DVD players before I took the refund, returned it and got a 60GB PS3.

I am sorry you could not find an acceptable set, I don't need to keep telling myself anything I know I have (for now) a great set with warranty from Sharp until 11/2010 for the Costco price of an LC4662U (1615.00 delivered.)

I think the first post of this thread should be updated will all the information about which sets are affected, etc. to avoid questions like this:

Does the banding problem affect the smaller Sharp sets?
Hey i have 17" got banding on the left side size does not matter..
I count 4 bands darkest 2 in the center on e30cabrio pic
post #179 of 228
This is a 6000x7800 image from visibleearth.nasa.gov

It looks amazing, unfortunately the camera (Canon G9) degrades it substantially. It is output from my computer by DVI cable at 1080p.

It is so large it is bigger than the screen so I can pan the image, when that is happening there is no banding, motion blur or artifacts.

here's mine. been trying for a month to get it replaced.
