Hello everyone.

I am planning to buy 2 x W4S SX-500 and Magneplanar 1.7 (3-way, freq. resp. 40-24 kHz, sensitivity 86dB/500Hz /2.83v, imp. 4 Ohm). Heard them both separately but never together. Any thoughts regarding the sound/compatibility, please ?
Thank you in advance.

That combo appears to be pretty popular on Audiogon's message board.

Anything new on the Reference series amps?
Hello,

Recently purchased an apple IMac computer and am interested in streaming
internet audio. Audio system is w4s-sti1000, dac-1, and salk HT3 speakers.
The IMac and stereo are in different rooms. Am curious about the squeezebox.
Would the dac-1 $125 upgrade to the asynchronous 24/96 usb port be
recommended? Any recommendations appreciated.

Thanks,

PB

USB cables get a bit finicky beyond 5m.

So if they are this far apart, no. No point getting the USB upgrade.

You can use an Airport Express. The mini stereo jack is also an optical out, and you can output yr iTunes to the AE. You can also control the iTunes library/playlists using an iOS app called Remote, by Apple. It's free.

An SB Touch may provide better SQ and does up to 24/96 audio but you do need some software installed on the Mac. I always think simpler is usually better.

I currently am using a Wavelink HS USB SPDIF box to the W4S DAC2 coax and then out to a Modwright LS100 pre to Quad 12L actives for my PC setup. With PureMusic, it's pretty darn nifty.
Is this correct. Purchase airport express and mini to toslink connector.
AE attaches to router via ethernet for programming. Once programmed
AE plugs in to outlet without ethernet. Connects to toslink in on DAC-1.
Magically my IMac,which is 35 ft. away, senses this and I may stream
iTunes internet radio to my stereo? Is the iPad 2 capable of being a
remote for AE?

Gracias,

PB

You don't need a wired connection IIRC.

And yes, Remote works with iPad (and 2) as well.

Nope, but they have some other new products. I'm interested in the music server: https://audiofest.net/2011/downloads/Special/WyredR.pdf

I have a Rotel RMB-1565 right now, but I really need two more channels and the Mini MC-7 would provide that plus (I think) a step up in build and sound quality, and power. The only thing I don't like about it is the looks. It is kinda ugly, at least compared to my Rotel. I'm also surprised that there are no vents on the top of the amp... or are there vents and just not visible in the company's stock photos ?

Also wondering if W4S ever runs a sale ?

And also wondering if anyone has photos of the internals of a Mini MC ? I did a search but no luck. Just curious how the 125ASX2 modules are laid out.
Vents are on the sides, no internal shots I've found. No sales, you can call for demo/returns or b stock.

No vents on top is surprising. I know the ice modules are efficient, but I don't know if I have ever seen an amp or AVR without top side vents given the common knowledge that heat rises. My Rotel is about 50% open on the top. An odd design decision by W4S.
That might be important if these things actually produced enough heat to be concerned about... I've been running my big boy 7 channel amp for years in a closed non vented console - open only in the back, never an issue..... Don't sweat it...

Had fans to cool off the Rotel amp this one replaced, was happy to get rid of them..

Hello,

Can we compare W4S Mini MC 7 CH with the Nuforce MCH-300SE-C7 ?
Or does Nufoce unit still better in term of sound quality ?

I'm looking for a MC power amp in Class D.

Thanks for your feedback

Have been waiting for a long time to get the DAC2.Just Did..Gotto say that out the box that it sounds amazing,a certain authority in playing my itunes music. There is a good amount of bass and definitely "air" in the highs..

The only gripe is that for HT bypass I had to adjust my receiver levels to +5 for decent volume..still not good enough..Will read about it or call Wyred for help.

My comparison dacs I have owned before are Dacmagic amd Arcam rdac.
I dont beleive so much in "burn-in" ...so happy customer..thanks Clint from wyred for your prompt emails

Cheers

Current system w4s-sti-1000, w4s dac1, NAD cdp, salk ht3 spkrs.
Purchased new iMac not thinking about music. For fun dragged 30 lb.
27 inch iMac into living room and hooked up to dac-1 usb port. iTunes
was ok but I want better. Tried airport express and sound was inferior.
Emailed w4s, they will upgrade usb port to 24/96 asynchronous for $125,
or 24/192 for $250. My options then would be regular exercise lugging
the iMac from office to living room, or running 40-50 ft. xlr cables from
office computer/dac-1, to living room sti-1000. Two blue jean 50 ft. xlr
cables are about $180. After tax and shipping the 24/192 upgrade and
xlr cables would be about $500. Worth it? Is the 24/96, 24/192 difference
appreciable? Any comments or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

PB
The difference in hi-res is subtle. I would opt for the upgrade and a cheap instead of lugging the mac around or using cables that length between a pre and amp.

Pick up a Squeezebox Touch. Load SB server on your Imac, run the Touch coax digital out to the W4S DAC1 and enjoy up to 24/96 Hi-rez.

It's worth it!

All in for about $250
wireless from iMac to squeezebox compromise hi rez?

is there a sound quality difference between coax and usb dac-1 inputs?

thanks,

+1

Keep it ones and zeros all the way to the source.
Optical is cleaner into the DAC

Iphone remote to control the Squeezebox - winner

Vents are on top and the sides. If you look on the previous page you will see my review of the MMC-7 with several pics.

Thanks Greg. That's good to know, but it's odd that the stock photos on the W4S website definitely do not show vents on top of the Mini MMC's.

Installed sbt today. Amazing. My system finally reflects the investment
of dollars and mind sweat. I've been listening to mac lossless files and
abc jazz australia, great music from down under. When I put the w4s dac1
into the system 10 months ago I never really got the expected wow factor.
The weak link was a low end nad cdp. I underestimated the impact of a
the transport, maybe, whatever. The sbt to the dac1 has lifted the veil.
Obvious expanded sound stage and focused detail. Major upgrade for
about $250.

Love my little squeeze box

I agree. I had been using a Dell Studio Hybrid PC as my transporter for WAV files and running it through a Cambridge Audio DACmagic. I built my own HTPC with HT Omega soundcard and was shocked at the difference running through the same DAC and everything else the same. I was now hearing a lot of additional detail in the mids and highs. Much more open and airy.

Makes me believe that some of those 1's and 0's went missing with the cheap integrated soundcard on the Dell PC, though everyone seems to think a digital signal can't be corrupted.

Hi,

I am considering this amp to power my Mirage OMD-28's. Presently I am using a Emotiva XPA-3 to power the OMD-28's and my Mirage OMDC2 center channel. My receiver is a Onkyo TX-NR906. The XPA-3 is supplies 200 watts at 8 ohms. Over at the Emotiva forum everyone recommends two XPA-1's to power my OMD-28's. I know the OMD-28's are not very efficient with a rating of 87db. At the Emotiva forum they are stating by supplying my speakers with 500 watts per channel, they will come to life and the sound stage will be increased. Hearing several say this has got me thinking on what would the 28's sound like with 500 watts feeding them.

Real estate is a premium and trying to accommodate the size of two XPA-1's will be a challenge. Then I started to research other amps which brings me to the ST-1000 by Wyred 4 sound. I would like to get opinions on using a ST-1000 with my OMD-28's.

Thanks,
Gene

Well, you're correct in that the speakers aren't terribly efficient. 87db w/ 1 watt @ 1m isn't too low at first glance, but it gets worse when you consider that's an in-room figure and the speakers are 6ohms nominal. As for the amps, are you clipping the xpa3? If not then there's little point to a larger amp. Subjective impressions like "they will come to life and the sound stage will be increased" aren't always very helpful. You'll gain about 4.5db of headroom by going from 200watts to 500 assuming there is no power compression. Bottom line, in my opinion(and that's all this is), if you're not clipping your amp at the moment then I can't see a need to upgrade.
I also have OMD28 and have tried XPA3 once. Now I have Rotel RB1092(2X500Watt ICE)+RB1091 on center OMD2. It is a difference when you crank the volum up not just on max volum. OMD28 i messured to 83/dB/1m/1Watt so they are not efficent! They love power to keep them under control. The XPA3 was not enogh for me(my reciver Pioneer SC-LX71/SC-05) gave the same sound/DB SPL. So the XPA3 was NOT an upgrade for me the RB1092 WAS.
