Official Wyred 4 Sound Amp Thread - Page 47

I am thinking of purchasing the MMC-5. I am concerned that the output is a little strong to run a set of 4ohm 100W surround speakers I have. I also want to run a pair of 6ohm front channel speakers of unknown wattage (henry kloss towerI cambridge soundworks speakers). I think the fronts will be fine with this amp, but I'm concerned about the lack of a level control to balance out the speakers and also that the surrounds may get blown out with the power output of the amp being about 4x (380W at 4ohms) the rated speaker max of the surrounds (100W at 4ohms).
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone tell me if there is a distinguishable difference between a pair of SX-500 monos and a ST-500 stereo? I'm hoping someone with a critical ear has heard both.

I've owned both. The monos allow more placement options and shorter speaker cables.

Unfortunately, I didn't compare them side by side, but I did hear both a few days apart in my rig and from what I could tell, there was no difference. IIRC, W4S will probably give you the same answer.

Some reviews I came across indicated that the SX-500 mono has the most detail and soundstage among the bunch as a result of its lowest noise floor and THD. There is a big cost difference for a full HT setup, so I wonder what the difference in detail and soundstage might be subjectively.

I'm looking into Wyred and wondering if anyone has tried them with Paradigm speakers. I've got a 2 channel system with a pair of Paradigm S6, an Oppo 95 and an Emotiva XPA-3(1 channel idle). I think I need a pre amp and the wyred STP-SE looks like it would be a great addition. I think Emo makes decent amps for theater, but they used to have more musical models than they do now.

I have used the W4S SX-1000 mono's on Aerial 9's, Revel Studio 2, and B&W 802D's with great results I have no reason to believe they would sound anything other than great with the Paradigm. I was using the Emotiva XPA-1 Mono's before the W4S and the XPA-1's are the best bang for the Buck on the market, truly a sleeper in the Audio industry. The thing that the W4S mono's do better than the Emotiva's was inky blackness on anything other than music. I mean dead silent when they were supposed to be silent.

I just purchased a nice new MC3x500 -- beautiful unit. I'm looking to purchase a used Mini MC-5 if anyone is interested in getting rid of theirs - just PM me.

Nice to hear of a comparison with the XPA-1, Emotiva's flagship. I'm thinking I'd be looking at Wyred's stereo amp line, the ST 500 at 250wpc would give plenty of power. But with the STP pre amp I'd be looking at 3500, and I wonder if I'd be as happy with an integrated amp like their STI 500 or 1000. They wouldn't have as good a pre amp section but would come substantally cheaper.

Adz, what speakers are you running with your MC3?

The STI comes close to a ST/STP-SE combo. If I didn't score an excellent deal on a STP-SE, I would still be more than content with a STI-500.

Face, so have you been pretty happy with your STP-SE? I've heard it described by some as slightly warm. Added to a Wyred amp is the result pretty neutral? As far as the STI option goes, that's what I was thinking, except the STP has better specs and apparently better volume circuitry. Whether that adds up to an audible difference depends on the speakers perhaps.

The STP-SE is pretty neutral, maybe slightly warm. As I mentioned before, the differences are subtle, but if you're like me and want to know you have the best possible setup, you know what you need to do.

I went from a ST-500 and 3 channel chip amp to a Mini MC-5. I originally kept my ST-500 and planned on using it with my mains, with the Mini powering the center and rear surrounds. After going back and forth a few times, I decided the Mini was enough for my HT. If you have a large room, difficult to drive speakers(2ohm impedance dips), or very inefficient speakers, then you may want to consider the larger MC amps. Otherwise, the Mini does a very good job on it's own.

Well I sucked it up and ordered a pair of SX-500s last night and now the monetary post-partums have begun as I await their arrival. You see, my thoughts are running toward the notion that my new amps may be a somewhat lateral move.

My current setup (6.1) is being driven by an Elite SC-07 receiver which will be my pre for sometime but the plan is to go to a HT bypass setup down the road, which is another justification for this move. I am not at all disappointed with the current sound, I'm just hoping that there is much more in store than just the additional wattage of the Wyreds. I'm curious to know if anyone has compared the sound or is using a similar setup?

The Wyreds will be driving my Salk Songtower RTs.
Who knows, if this works out maybe my Songcenter will get one too.

I am in a similar situation... I am currently running an sc35 and I think I am not getting great sound out of it at or near max levels. I love ice and the blackness of it's floor so a pair of sx500's was my next choice. I will be curious if you could post a review when you get them in.
