PS3 solution - IR2BT - Converts IR to BT - Available late March

Thread Starter
I'm not sure why this isn't more highly publicized, but Bruce Mitchell is creating a small converter, 4.5"x3"x1" that converts Infrared to Bluetooth allowing any IR-based universal controller to work with the Playstation 3, with the ability to turn on/off via remote.

www dot ir2bt dot com

No need to do any external installations, just plug in the converter box somewhere, either to your PS3 usb, or to a plug via external power jack, pair your PS3 with the converter box, and it will convert all IR commands to bluetooth.

Not quite ready for production yet, but might be worth taking a look at.

Regards.

dyno already make a ps3 IR blu-wave remote.
Most ps3 user who have a universal remote can control their ps3 with this IR blaster.

This isn't an IR to USB remote like to blu-wave. This will receive IR and transmit Bluetooth. You'll be able to power the PS3 on and off, use the home button as well as the four color buttons. It basically takes the Sony Bluetooth remote and adds an IR receiver and power outlet via USB. The USB connection is optional if you want to use batteries or you can use any USB connection to power the unit. There is no physical connection of the IR2BT to the PS3.

I'm not sure I understand your post right, why the IR2BT would be a better choice than the dyno blu-wave IR?

I assume you mean the Nyko IR remote and PS3 USB dongle. The IR2BT gives you the full functionality of the PS3 Blu-ray remote, including the ability to turn the unit on and off. There are a few other functions that you don't get with the Nyko solution. Plus you wouldn't have to have the IR2BT near the PS3 as it's using Bluetooth.

BTW, the IR2BT has a thread in the Blu-ray player forum.

Ok thanks Mike but I live in Canada so late March in the US means it wont be avalaible here for a while!
And the MX-980 cannot turn the ps3 ON with blu-wave?
I own the blu-wave but I just wait on my MX-980 to hook it up since I already have the Sony BT remote.
I'm willing to turn my ps3 ON at least with the MX-980 even if I can't turn it OFF.
Is it possible?

The blu-wave will not turn the PS3 on or off. The problem is that the USB dongle solutions can't transmit the Home button command which is required to remotely power the unit on or off via USB. The current solution is the PS3IR+PWR which runs a cable to the power button where you tape a copper strip that transmits the on and off signal.

Here is the Canadian version of the IR2BT:

No, it's not possible without either the IR2BT solution or the Schmartz solution also mentioned in this forum.

Edit: Also the one mentioned above which is a modified Sony Bluetooth remote.

Geez!
Sony must of laugh loud when they were thinking about us users who try to find a way to use this device with an universal remote!
I bought the BD/PS BT remote when I got my ps3 then the dyno blu-wave to go IR and know I'm still screwed-up.
You know what, I might just tap the PS button on my siaxis controller to turn it ON... Untill I'm sick of doing it, than I'll have to buy my 47th device to control this machine. In a world where everything is control by IR and RF sony choose BT. Well thanks to both of you but I am kind of mad at sony for this...

Well the first PS2's didn't have IR even though playing DVD's was a selling point.
They later added IR, so they may do the same with the PS3, hopefully.
But for now this device and the Schmartz upcoming BT/IR box will probably be the best solutions. I'm a gadget geek so I'll probably pick up both to be able to compare/contrast them.

Hopefully they will add the IR feature to the new PS3 that will be coming out. While I would guess that the Blue tooth control was a good idea, and the fact that they would like you to buy their seperate blue tooth remote control, they didn't take in the fact of the big universal remote crowd out there that were crippled by the lack of IR control. I hate work around solutions.

Just let us know how it's work when you get it. (IR2BT)
thanks
Gui.
