Well, as if there weren't enough reasons not to hop on the 3D bandwagon too soon and give up on the AVP. The article on the front page of this forum about Toshiba's "glasses-less" 3D displays indicates to me it's worth waiting for that technology to evolve and get into bigger displays or PJ's... if it's any good that is.

That will be the technology I'd prefer waiting for. Happy to wait for it!!

Don't hold your breath on that:

Toshibas Glassesfree 3D TV Same Old Problems

I think the gist of it is that they don't do 2D very well...

I setup a network drive and instead of selecting just the music, I selected the whole drive................................ Well, you can imagine it found any and every file that was an audio file and tried to play it. I discovered this by accident and determined what I had done. Sorry for any alarms I may have caused others. All is well

That's good news

Though can you imagine some people popping in to have a look at the AVP thread and reading the batt low post and then jumping on other threads letting everyone know that the AVP runs on batteries

No kidding,
The glasses are a huge turnoff. Not just for me but the majority of people I talk to kind of feel the same way.

In the theater as a novelty night out glasses are tolerable.. but for everyday home use, i.e. watching sports etc it ain't gonna fly IMO.

Besides in five or six years there might be enough content to make it worthwhile. Right now you'd probably have watched it all in a weekend.

I wonder if projectors could be better as a "glasses-free" display - maybe using multiple lenses for 3D and reverting back to single for 2D?

Its funny in this forum there is big support for it and others also but in speaking to people who really don't care for HT are over it.

It's like going on a show ride a number of times is great but afterawhile you get sick of it.

Mmmmm.........I watched my first 3D material the other night. It was a college football game. It was interesting. The screen brightness was darker and the image was a little less sharp but it was definately like being at field level. When there were people walking in front of the camera it almost seemed like they were walking in my room! Coolest thing had to be the cheerleaders in 3D.

This was on a 2010 Samsung 3D compatible plasma and I viewed it through my AVP via Comcast and ESPN 3D channel........And, of course, the required 'Wayfarer' glasses.

From your comment "I viewed it through my AVP via Comcast and ESPN 3D channel", it appears the AVP will pass 3D without HGMI 1.4. If so, that is good news.

Thanks

My Telus Optik TV service (internet based TV) has a couple of channels marked 3D on it, but I haven't seen any content on there yet. I know our CBC station is going to be doing some hockey games in 3D.. if they can pull that off at the speed of that game there might be some hope for the technology.
I've got season tickets so I see half the games in 3D already..

I don't understand all the ins and out of 3D yet - I do know that it works on my setup with the new TiVo Premiere (Comcast cable system) fed through HDMI on the AVP directly to the plasma. None of the HDMI cables are "HDMI 1.4 certified" as I bought them all over a year ago but I think they are high speed which is what matters most for 3D. I just bought a Samsung 3D bluray player and I am crossing my fingers on passing bluray to my tv - Haven't tried it yet but will post when I do.

Here in Atlanta, GA (USA), on Comcast, we have one dedicated ESPN channel and one dedicated COMCAST 3D channel. The only content I have seen so far was a few games of World Cup Soccer, Thursday and Friday of the PGA Golf tournament and it looks like one college football game per week. There are reports of NFL games coming out too. It is kind of a pain because they don't publish any of the upcoming programming on the TV Guide so one has to look on the internet for ESPN and Comcast to see what is coming up. I guess this will improve with time as more people get 3D and it evolves.

Even if 3D doesn't take off in the mainsteam, I think 3D porn may have a future.

Spoke to some high up technical people at Denon HK today, they deal directly with Denon Japan,
I asked the following quick questions.
Have you heard if the AVP with get an EQ upgrade soon? Answer NO
Will the AVP be replaced in the next 12 months? Answer not according to company policy.
Is it technically possible to do a HDMI hardware upgrade inside the AVP ? Answer YES
Will the POA be upgraded in 2011? answer NO
Sidenote:: Denon & Marantz are working closely together on technical solutions & hardware design.
So no real good or bad news, my interpretation was that Denon is working on something for us all.

I'm STOKED about the HDMI upgrade!!!! I'm looking forward to any news about it!

Well, my POA is sold and I am working on the AVP, so will be leaving here soon. Great bunch of people and I love the units, I just want to move on.

All that was said is that it's possible.

Which doesn't mean much, as any h/w upgrade is possible for enough money.

NETHOMAS: Used AVP's are selling for around $3000 right now. I think your best bet to sell it would be ebay as Audiogon is stacked with very sharp buyers and ebay has more square type buyers.

PS: Not that the above info is accurate or written in stone, but I have stated for over 2 months now that the A1's are no longer going to be supported or upgraded with any relevant new features. You can all keep waiting and hoping they come and in the meantime your $8000 processor will eventually be worthless on the resale market.

I'll say it again...if I am wrong and they come out with X32 and sub EQ then I can always go back into the used market and pick up an A1 on the cheap and upgrade it and if I am right then I sold at the top of he used market and pocketed thousands while UPGRADING to the newest Denon AVP's.

Really, beever.....we all read it the first dozen or so times you said it. Speaking of time to move on....

Hmm only about $750 less than I paid for mine (new, open box). I guess it's holding its value pretty well then so I'll hold onto mine for a while longer thanks...

My car will also be worthless eventually, but it's cheaper in the long run to run it into the ground than to keep trading it in for a new one every few years.

Last time I checked, Denon was only selling 1 AVP model - the one you keep telling us is worthless. I believe you switched to a Denon AVR. If you're happy that's fine, but please respect the fact that the rest of us are happy with what we have for now.

You may be right beev, but my POA certainly brought more than that. I guess time will tell won't it?
NETHOMAS: Your POA was an amp and amps dont change much so they hold their value very well. I sold a MAC MC207 not a POA. If you are honest with us all, please post how much you sold your AVP for if and when it sells. I wish you the best of luck.

perhaps it would be best if we stuck with technical talk please

Thanks

A better CD sound??

I ask this here because the AVP is the one thing we all have in common.
It has great DAC's, and like some of you I like using Audyssey when listening to music. I perfer Audyssey L&R with 2 channel music.

After adding the PS Audio GCPH to my setup and hearing the benifits. I got nosing around PS Audio's website and seen there Perfect Wave Transport.

This has got me wondering how much can I improve me CD listening experience?

I am using my OPPO 83 for CD's, HDCD's (via COAX) DVD-audio and SACD's (via HDMI). I am very happy with the sound, as I was with the Denon phono stage before I installed the GCPH.

I have read some of you use Denon players with D-link. How would compare the benifits from other players you have had.

I know one thing all this nosing around cost money.

Give your thoughts. Save my money and use the OPPO. Buy a CD player only and use the OPPO for SACD and DVD-audo, ect. ect.

Thanks in advance.

Brad

Hi Brad,
I use a denon link player for cd & i'm really pleased with the result, when you consider one of the main problems of delivering pcm audio is jitter & realise D-link all but eliminates it,the benefits are great

I hope you keep reading this thread, we promise to only make fun of your loss once per month . Pity to see some of the old owners sell their units but i guess we have a nature to upgrade/change our setups and its amazing so many people used this unit for so long to begin with.

Indeed several times this was discussed already, the avp is build up in modules infact not all models are the same right now !!. The europe/japan/usa modules have different boards or parts missing. The video board (that includes the hdmi) is shared with the 5308 and can be replaced as one module. It seems logical for denon if the numbers work out for them to offer a replacement for that board and 'solve' most of the weak points of the avp today.

Indeed a technical denon person saying its possible basically is a nice way of saying nothing at all .

Daniel.
