Speaking of, theres a new firmware update that says 'SFPGA update"
what's that mean?

its gonna take 105 min! Crazy.
For upgraded or non upgraded units?
Thanks JonFo. I shall remember that next time. Now I just hope to get my 100kg of amplifiers back in good shape from Denon reasonably quick
:-)

Its for upgraded units.

Its all done and I don't know what its for?

Oh well, works perfect like always!

Hi, new to this forum. I read somwhere here you could run direct mode with minimal processing and subwoofer support for music. How can I accomplish this? I recently purchased upgraded unit.

Other equipment:
Classe CA3200, Bryson 3BSST, Oppo 95, Berkeley Alpha DAC + Alpa USB, Classe CD transport CDT-1, B&W 803D (R/L), B&W center & surrounds, Paradigm Sub 25, Cardas balanced Golden Reference ICs, win7 A/V server, JBL X30 projector W Elite screen.

^^
Using the remote control, you can press the "D/ST" button to get "Direct" mode and the "PURE" button to get the "Pure Direct" mode ... both buttons located on the middle touch panel display after press. The Pure Direct mode goes an extra step further shutting down the front panel display and analog video processing.

Thx,

Yeah, I did know that. I've had several denon AVRs so I generally know my way around them. I was looking for was subwoofer crossover support which i had read was possible on avp in direct mode. When i got the unit it behaved pretty much the same in that regard as my ar
Vr 4803ci. My sub shuts off with anything 'purer' than stereo.

Thx,

Dale

Refer to the 2CH Direct/Stereo settings on p. 33 in the Owner's manual to use the sub.

What does SFPGA mean anyways?

Schottky field programmable gate array.

My upgraded AVP couldnt find any newer firmware last night, even after repeated attempts of checking.

WillyJ: yes! That was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks so much. I just learned, I will need in future to be very explicit, what I need to know and what I already know. Thx so much. Now I can make valid comparisons between direct mode with sub and audessey/ stereo with sub.

When I was playing around with all that a few months ago, I found that without Audyssey, the bass was tricky to control depending on source material. I mostly played with it with my turntable and the results were not good. Bass was real boomy and rumbled on some records, too much or not enough bass on others. So the benefits of having the sub engaged in pure analog mode were not better than having the ADC / Audyssey/ DAC path. That is only my results with my room and my subs. I suspect it might be better if one had remote controllable subs (for volume) and good bass traps and perhaps a better floor.

Note too that with the AVP it is possible to listen in pure direct mode with Audyssey engaged which is the way I listen to most of my vinyl.

Also note that I haven't done any playing around since getting my AVP back from the upgrade so I cannot say if the results would be the same with the upgraded AVP.

Agreed that A+B are NOT volume matched as a PAIR, so that's a loss relative to the prior setup.
To mitigate that, I'll need to adjust gains in my speaker processors (I bypass all passive X-overs in my speakers and use the $5K DBX 4800 for those functions) and then use my AV automation controller to swap 'presets' on the DBX speaker processors when in A+B mode.
Story of my system, nothing is ever simple ....

Yes the EQ is set per physical pre-output but before the XT32 upgrade Audyssey would create an EQ curve that was unique and applied to the PAIR of surrounds, rather than just equalizing each separately and then setting their levels as a pair. So there were three sets of equalizations; surround A, surround B and surround A+B. After this upgrade Audyssey cannot create any EQ for Surround A+B.

So while you can set the combined levels of surround A+B yourself to match that of the other speakers you cannot EQ them as a pair with Audyssey and the AVP.

Well, i didn't do the check, I just went to upgrade and it did it. Mind you, I don't think ive done this since it got upgraded, so maybe they forgot to do it.... Anyways, that is how i did it.

Thanks again.

There was a minor update a few months ago, for post-upgrade units. Sounds like this was just yours getting that particular one, as opposed to a "new" update.

I did that one then and this is a new one.

I just went and upgraded too without checking first.

Hi All
I wasnt going to do the upgrade but i finally caved it and didi it. I noticed with the speakers you can hear the change but I noticed the subs were quiet low( sub 1 -2.5db, sub 2 -2.0db and sub 3 running as master and slave -3.5db) Any help would be aprreciated as with the old Audyssey it was fine and using the same mic positions. I was told this new one is more accurate so Im just curious is it me or there is something im doing wrong. Im going to try tonight again.

Thanks again

Hmmm... My subs sound overall much improved. I only have two, but a real improvement. Didn't notice any drop in output. Congrats on getting the upgrade. SJ

Well that sucks, Franin. I'm really sorry to hear about this and I know how frustrating it must be.frown.gif I can just picture you banging your head against the wall. On a bright note, we watched Spider-Man 1 & 2 and they sounded spectacular on my non-ugraded AVP.wink.gif I bet you'll have this resolved in no time.

Thanks Waboman, but I finally got it. smile.gif

Originally I’ve had my room calibrated by a HAA consultant and we used his professional RTA gear and we were moving the subs( to fix the dips) and speakers around to get the response we were after. There were some peaks and he offered ideas like purchasing a number of QSC EQ's. I was looking into that at one stage but I found A) it was becoming more expensive than the upgrade, B) I looked at on how they worked and it went over my head and I didn’t want to keep calling him for any changes which would cost me more money ( wife would kill me eek.gif ). I was used to the peaks I guess that’s why I’m surprised in the change. But anyway with this new upgrade I found a balanced sound throughout and with the height channels, SJ, your right it opened up the sound stage. Unfortunately my room doesn’t allow for wides but heights work very well.
When I originally picked it up and set it up I wasn’t too happy at first as there was some heat sink glue residue (I was told) on the casing (It came off easily) but still they had to be told. Just for people who decide to try test tones and it doesn’t work don’t fret (like I did especially if your using balanced) It’s like starting a new and you have to reconfigure everything.
I’m hoping to get a delivery this week of the pro kit; I’ve been looking forward to this for quite awhile so I’m glad it finally happened. Thanks to Jonfo for the tip regarding what to do a few pages back so I’m looking forward in using I was told a professional calibrated mic and a PC. Btw are there any European/Australian owners who are using it at the moment? Out I’ve forgotten or I’m surprised no one has jumped on board in getting one.
All in all I’m happy now I was a bit taken back( regarding the Subs ) but after back and forth emails with Chris (audyssey) who was absolutely fantastic( without a doubt I mean really who goes out of there way especially co-founders in helping people cool.gif ) in helping me.

I have been too busy working until now to get back into working on my system. I know that Denon has come out with the upgrade to the AVP-A1HD, could anyone who has gotten the upgrade tell me how much the total bill was and if I can have a Denon service center in Illinois handle it or if I have to have it shipped. Also is there a new warranty on the work and if so how long is it? Is the upgrade worth the cost and would you do it again now that you have it. I appreciate any input since I am watching my pennies but I like great quality equipment.

Hi deputy sheriff I would do it again now that I know what's going on. I was a bit taken back on how I received the unit (doesn't mean everyone is the same ) but overall I'm very happy now.

Yeah, really worth it. Not sure what i would replace an upgraded AVP with at this point. Very satisfied with this unit and my POA. SJ
