I agree that it is painful when any tech I buy becomes obsolete but other than an anvil, just about any tech I get will be obsolete sooner or later. My TV is old and I'm ready for a replacement but I won't be buying until a bar is passed. A TV larger than 70" , 4K, OLED and Hdmi 2.0 meets that new bar. Eventually 8K will be a standard and probably a new ultraoled tech etc will replace whatever I buy next. As long as I get 8 years out of it, I'll be happy. I expect about 7-10 years on my prepros and about 2 years on my media players. Amps should be good for about 15 -20 years and likewise with my speakers. Pretty much everything is obsolete within a year of being on the market, it's just a matter of deciding if the gap between features is enough to say it is too obsolete for your individual needs. My TV is already too obsolete even though there really isn't what I want available at a reasonable price to replace it. So I wait for prices to come down and larger TVs to become more common.

There's very little 4K source material available to the average consumer at this point. And the cost for the big displays is just too high given all the questions. I think I'll just wait it out for at least a few years as I'm very happy with what I've got right now.

I completely agree to what you are writing. This is also my opinion and I will also wait. However, with the 4k material, I was may be wrong. 4k cameras are out only for a short time and - as far as I am not mistaken - most movies, we can see in a public theater today are 2k and not 4k.

My personal opinion is, that I am very happy with HD and especially loss-less sound. For me personally picture quality has reached a very good level, for most movies and the sound engineers and the newly created job description sound designers, start to do a very good job. I won't switch to 4k any time soon, because HD - IMO - just started to reach its full potential.

Does our Upgraded AVP support ARC (Audio Return Channel)? Thanks in advance.

Just another source for 4K coming http://www.engadget.com/2013/09/12/singulus-tests-100gb-4k-ready-blu-ray-discs/ Mind you, I don't expect a HDMI 2.0 module tomorrow but someone has to keep this crowd lively and excited about new toys smile.gif

I am looking for the SPK592 upgrade. I know I am a little late. Denon is no longer shipping the upgrade kits. Denon customer service told me that there are service centers that stocked the kit and may still have them. There are a lot of service centers. Does anybody know of a service center that may have it? Thanks.

At the very least give each of the Super Service Centers a call ...

Good idea. No luck though at the Super Service Centers. Seems unlikely that I will find one. Several of the service centers mentioned that they doubt anybody would just stock the part considering the high cost to buy the kit. Thanks.

The repair shops generally only ordered the kit when an AVP/5308CI owner placed the order with them for the upgrade. The kits were expected to be gone by last spring, so if you really want to find on, I first see if you can obtain a list of those centers that Denon certified to do the upgrade and barring that, I would start calling all of the authorized service centers listed on Denon's website, starting with those in your state and working outbound.

This is also exactly my experience. The upgrade kit was ordered when I asked for it. I guess it is too expensive for the repair shops to have them on stock and nobody buys them.

I wish you good luck finding a kit. May be there is one still out there...

I also checked the Japanese Denon page for you and found a link to the upgrade, as well that the AVP A1 is still featured on this web page. The link is here http://www.denon.jp/jp/News/Pages/News-Details.aspx?NewsType=company%20news&NewsId=134&Year=

I have just translated it via Google and this reads:

"Will be conducted hardware of the AV surround amplifier AVC-A1HD and flagship AV surround preamplifier AVP-A1HD of Denon, the software upgrade.
Other corresponding to the 3D video signal of HDMI, reproduction of surround sound high-precision will be further equipped with Audyssey MultEQ XT32. In addition, DTS Neo: equipped with X, Audyssey DSX, and Dolby Pro Logic IIz processor, will respond to surround reproduction of the front height / wide.

But I couldn't find an e-mail address to send an inquiry.
Hope it helps, at least somehow.

PS: On the bottom of the page I found this and a phone number at the end:

in australia, the authorised service centre had to specifically get my unit in, inspect it and only then could they order a kit from the local importer/distributor. this was after I had registered interest with the local importer so they knew how many kits to get from japan. there is still a good chance a kit or two around the world somewhere sitting on a shelf collecting dust.

I don't often have new issues these days - but I'd like to be able to get a specific signal from the AVP to another room. To be precise, is there a way of outputing either an analogue or digital audio signal to another system when the input is from the DVD A1 via DL4 / HDMI i.e. a BluRay or SACD? I have achieved this from a standard SP/DIF input to the AVP and of course analogue sources are easy to relay. From the DVD A1HD all I get is silence. My purpose is to get the sound of the main system to be available in an adjacent room in stereo so that I don't miss any sounds from what I am watching or hearing when I go through to put on the kettle or do other work in the kitchen. I do hope this makes sense smile.gif

Thought about 'Zones' already? I don't use it and have no experience with this, but I think, that is exactly what it is good for, isn't it.

Thanks for the suggestion but according to the AVP manual "Digital audio signals input from the DENON LINK or HDMI connectors cannot be played in multi-zone." And feeds originating from the DVD A1 are precisely what I was wondering about. Has anyone found a way to do this by other means. I'm only looking for a stereo feed but despite all the complex digital processing available in the AVP this seems to be unavailable. Odd.

Having investigated the availability of such devices in the UK I have found a sensibly priced high-quality equivalent. So, if I ran an HDMI lead from the AVP HDMI o/p 2 to this box, then fed its HDMI onwards to my small monitor (used for minor video matters like setting menu items or PVR recordings) and the analogue pair from the box to my secondary system, you think this would provide a stereo signal from all sources that feed my AVP via HDMI. I have a small doubt about what happens with the combined DL4/HDMI feed of BluRay discs and the DL4 only feed of SACDs is still not useable. Any further thoughts here before I part with my $ for an item like this
http://www.lindy.co.uk/audio-video-c2/converters-scalers-c105/audio-spdif-analogue-dacs-c106/hdmi-audio-extractor-p1635
You will note that I would regard my main projector feed from HDMI o/p 1 to be sacrosanct smile.gif

Your idea is very clever - and thanks for coming up with it. Much appreciated.

Hi Daniel, cool pic, and boy, I keep forgetting just how big the AVP truly is (mine is in an equipment room). When one sees 5 of them like that it's impressive.

I felt how small they looked compared to the amps and center, but having seen the center last time i was there if i remember correctly it uses 2x10" drivers. But 5 of them thats +400lbs of pre-amps..

@jones sorry i hope you don't mind i just figured it was such a nice image.

Daniel.

I am also using the old Harmony 1100 and I am quite satisfied using it. Works good with Oppo and Denon and all other equipment I have.
I have studied the new Harmony Ultimate and came to the conclusion that I like the old one better regarding the remote control itself. I like the big touch screen. However, if I can use one of my Android tablets with an app as remote, I am OK with the new one. Just replaced mine mid of this year, because one button was broken. Logitech doesn't do any repairs but they offered me the replacement for half the price.
Currently I am happy with my 1100 but the day will come, I have to replace it.

What are your impressions about the Ultimate, Daniel? Does it work the same way with the AVP?

My AVP is constantly resetting my HDMI assignments for different devices to "None". Has anyone encountered this before?
I ran into a similar problem when I was trying to set multiple sources to use the same HDMI connection. When I tried setting Blue Ray and Satellite to both use HDMI 1 it would revert them to none. You can only have one source use an HDMI connection.
No problems here but I am using a pretty 'conservative' set-up. One HDMI for one source.

My AVP is very stable, if I don't have network problems or the DLNA server is hanging or my Android app for the AVP has a problem. But this has nothing to do with the AVP.

Hope you can solve your problems.

Try a processor reset.

Anyone else finding the fans in both AVP and A1HD are getting noisy. Any cures to offer?
Its A possibility Dust build up inside the AVP over time could cause the Fan to spin faster due to less convective air cooling taking place intern the unit will run hotter .. Also the Fan itself can get A build up of Dust on the blades making it less affective..
That is a good idea, especially since a PC cooling system can get indescribably filthy - (these items are only specialist PCs). What follows is, how does one get at the fans in both machines to do some cleaning?

Hmm i never considered this a bug but a weird feature that if you assign 2 sources to the same port it would reset them both to none very irritating while installing but are you hinting it should be possible to have the same input to be shared by 2 sources (virtual i guess) ?

Daniel.
