BD-UP5000 problem discs - Page 9

I didn't have the same problem with Harold and Kumar, though I did experience a playback glitch about 15 minutes into the movie, and it only lasted less than a second (rental disc -- I cleaned it beforehand, but could've missed a spot). Otherwise, it played perfectly.

It plays everything I throw at it without any fuss. There's only one time I had an issue and that was with Fox's Sunshine. And a quick firmware update fixed it.

Hopefully a firmware update for the 5000 can address the Harold and Kumar 2 issue (that's if it isn't just *my* Harold and Kumar 2 disc or BD-UP5000 having this problem).

But the 1.3 update for the 5000 is far newer than the firmware on my 1400. And I refuse to touch the firmware on my 1400 until I encounter a problem.

Just watched H&K EfGB today, there were no glitches to report, played through flawlessly throughout the entire movie. I even did the "Change the Movie" after I watched it and there were a few skips in there, but I am figuring they were attributed to the branching involved. I have to say that that feature adds a whole new movie to this title......

Could be the thread mentioning the player hangs when accessing menu options on Shine A Light is missing. Anyway, just go ahead and play it on a LG BH200 if you have one. Or, maybe it plays if you don't access the menu.

The screen freezes up for a few seconds and sound pops, and if I don't fast forward then it completely freezes up. It does that on and off for about two chapters.

I have the same problem and had to finish watching it on the PS3. Strangely enough, I still heard two pops after I switched players.

Found a problem disc tonight that I haven't seen mentioned yet.

Brotherhood of the Wolf (UK Import) HD-DVD: English Subtitles will not engage and locks up the player. Too bad I dont speak french.

^Thanks.

Meh, continual discoveries like these make me pause when considering snatching up bargain imports.

I just noticed another issue with The Hunt for Red October on my player. I leave it on fast forward for more than 7 seconds before it locks up the player. Anyone else having this problem?

I was able to watch Doomsday without any problems, all the navigations seemed to work fine.

I can confirm that the Harold & Kumar sequel (Hollywood Video rental) has audio dropouts throughout the movie (some repeatable, some not, with more near the end than the beginning). Those who didn't hear these, I suspect, have analog connections (feel free to correct me if that is a mistaken assumption). I also got one error when using the branching feature where the sound went to static and the only way to get it to return was to power cycle the 5000...just another random software bug that required certain conditions to be met before manifesting. Using the feature after that power cycle, it played well enough (mirroring Ph8te's experience).

No one has reported any problems with Doomsday prior to your fast forwarding lockup discovery on The Hunt for Red October as far as I know (just trying to clarify here as Doomsday is a Universal, not Paramount, title released on July 29).
I don't think I had audio drop outs while I was watching H&K 2, just the freezing up problem. I only mentioned Doomsday since my neighbor's 5K has a slight problem loading up the disc requiring him to power cycle the player.

I haven't tried any of the other recent Paramont releases to see if it also results in a lock up after fast forwarding for an extended time period. Anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks for clarifying.

Re: H&K2, I really think the audio dropouts were down to the somewhat buggy state of the disc in the 5000. There was another point in my testing of the disc that the "special features" menu was not revealing all the available choices and I had to reload the menu to get them back. Rambo, another New Line title, had menu glitches as well. Prior to this disc, I had watched 3 Sony titles and one New Line (Bank Job) without any menu or audio hitches.

You are not mistaken...I also didnt have any issues with the branching feature or any of the deleted scenes....I never experienced any of the "missing extras" either (unless of course this is a different title).

Part of that menu vanished and became inaccessible only once, didn't repeat.

Also, I was confused. Rambo is Lionsgate, not New Line. egads.

I received Doomsday from netflix today, and it won't play on my Samsung BD-UP5000. Is this a firmware issue or just a faulty disc? I tried rubbing alcohol, as well as hot water and liquid soap, but it still isn't working. The audio(no image) plays for a minute and 6 seconds but it permanently freezes after that.
I searched for 21 in this thread and came up with no results, so I guess nobody has mentioned the game won't play and just freezes up the player requiring a power off to clear it up. It plays the game instructions with no problem, and the movie.
Not reporting a problem disc, but I was surprised in a good way. Tested out Transformers BD expecting the same issues to come up as with previous Paramount releases. However, menu navigation seem to work just fine and dandy.

I have not had this problem, I can play the game just fine.

Doomsday played flawlessly on mine. I get the feeling that quality control on BD discs isn't quite up to par with DVDs just yet -- too many, "Plays on mine, doesn't play on yours" stories across various player models, I never hear about this with DVDs.

Good news, HD 335! Hopefully, the 7-29 discs represent a fluke that will be corrected (this month? :/).

I also rented Doomsday (for free, glad to have not paid for this nonsense) and had flawless playback. This was my first experience with Universal Blu and I was pleased with the menu response, including that of U-Control.
I really like the Universal menus. Simple and consistent across all of their titles. I don't give a damn how pretty or Java-laden a menu is, just give me access to everything easily and quickly.

Plus they still have the coolest HD intro
post #260 of 1305
I always thought that too about Uni menus. When HD DVD lost I was like "crap, there go the best menus in HD". Glad to see they stuck with them.
I dont know if this is a problem with the disc but, I just watched the movie transformers on BD and had quite a few audio drops and video stutter. Has anyone else had these issues with this movie?

Here's a disc I haven't seen any complaints about yet: Deja Vu. I watched this rental tonight and had 4-5 glitchy areas where the video/sound stuttered momentarily but the player recovered immediately and the disc played on. On repeated playback of these sections (sorry, didn't note timestamps), the video played just fine but I could hear an audio glitch (a click/pop) in the same location. I'm guessing (hoping) it's just a problem with this particular pressing.
vinnie, did these glitches happen early during the film? I originally watched DéjÃ* Vu on my PS3 but am curious now how my 5K will handle it.

nope, middle to latter half.

The 21 game works on my LG BH200. Another problem I have is:

Does anyone know how to turn off that idiotic "Bonusview" icon that stays on the screen when playing Heroes 2?

I had to take the disk out and play it on the LG instead.

Temporary solution: Disable on-screen messages in the setup menu. Known bug.
Watched the second half of DéjÃ* Vu and did experience the same glitches you were talking about. It's more like a slight skip or pause. No audio drop out and I couldn't replicate the problem when I played through that section again. There were 4 total for me.

I couldn't get the BD version of Galapagos to load on the 5K, it would get to the loading screen then the screen would turn all black.

interesting that no one's caught these Deja Vu problems before. When I tried replicating, there was no skip, pause or even audio dropout...just an audible "click" in the exact place where the player stuttered on the initial run.
bori reported a problem with the BD version of Transformers where Megan Fox is checking out Bumblebee's engine. I went through that section 3 times and didn't get any video stutter or audio drops. Maybe bori is just getting people to watch Megan bend over and show off her sexy abs cause my wife was giving me funny stares the whole time

I still haven't watch the movie through since it's quite long and frankly, I don't like the movie enough to sit through it again anytime soon with other movies to watch. However, I definitely favor the bitstream TrueHD track over the DD+ after listening to a few scenes comparing the two.

^As you may have seen over at HDD (or here), there is a volume differentiation between the two (TrueHD being louder)...on top of that, the bass is apparently channeled to the .1 channel more so in the TrueHD encode. It's not an ideal comparison unfortunately...especially not enough for me to double dip with this mediocre movie.
