did anybody buy their tv set from sears?

I bought mine at aug 4th and I need to go return for another one as I no longer see the 'soap opera' effect and also there are too much motion blur.

I am getting so desparate that I might even just take the 15% restocking fee to return if they don't let me.

I did went into SM and tweak'd but I erased the log. Will that be enough for them to not notice.
does anyone have real experince in sears on how the return process goes?

I have a question about AMP that i don't believe has been discussed yet. We know that AMP is interpolating frame data and injecting the results in the extra refresh cycle created by 120Hz. We also know that beyond the low, medium, and high selections in the standard menu, the service menu allows a value of 0 to 32 for each of these selections. What I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around is what the AMP algorithm does differently based on a high or low value? How does an interpolated frame value of 1 differ from a value of 2, 3 or 31?

I was actually curious about that my self. I figure it's something like, lower setting adds interpolated frames, maybe a new frame for so long, then move to the next. Higher setting would not hold the interpolated frames as long, but instead, add more of them. Though I have no idea at all how it really works.

I'm trying to play my XBox 360 on my LN40A650 and I am getting the component dropout very bad. Is there a workaround or fix to be able to use component at 1080p yet? Will this possibly be fixed in firmware? God I just got this in today and I have buyers remorse. If I wanted to play at 720p I could have got a set for $600 less.

If you have an HDMI-less xbox, and don't mind spending a bit of cash, you can get the 360 VGA cable... better image quality than component, less input lag, everyone wins.
By the way, chances are, the games you're playing are running at 720p or lower anyway, and the xbox is just stretching the image. I don't even own a 360 game that runs in native 1080p, and I've got most of the big ones.

No solution, but my audio has also cut out a handful of times after 2001.3. Just wanted to corroborate your experience - either neither of our sets are defective, or they both are.

New firmware fixed that problem.
Download it from Samsungs site.

i wouldnt return it man, but if u have to then go ahead but i think u will be paying the restocking fee obviously.. if u tell them its defective they will probably have it checked and if they dont find anything wrong with it they will indeed charge u the fee.

Buy the ext warranty. Something always goes wrong eventually with items such as large screen tv's. I was able to get the 650 because my 2 year old Sony was too expensive to fix. Bestbuy gave me a $2500 store credit to purchase whatever I wanted.

So, as I sit here and type, I am watching my 650 and pondering how lucky I was to have my tv break and be able to replace it with this beautifu television.

Just picked up my 52a650 after exchanging my 52a750 for it.

Best decision ever. I think the PQ is actually better but I'm prob just seeing things.

Thank you. My box had a sticker on it that said newest software loaded on this TV, so I thought I was good to go... I checked the version and it said 1003.m

Seems to be working so far.

However, isn't "just scan" the preferred viewing method? I noticed with 16:9, the olympic logo is a lot closer to the top of the screen and to me, the image seems less proportioned.

Also, the line doesn't disappear. I find it hard to believe i'm the only one having this problem. Its driving me crazy that no one has mentioned it. Maybe i have a bad set???

The problem you're having has nothing to do with the TV, nor does the issue you probably see with a string of white and black dots across the top of some channels. The information you're seeing is because the TV is resolving all the data in the picture stream that the channel is sending. Unfortunately some TV stations try to cheat a little and use some of the bandwidth for the picture for other things such as closed captioning data streams. TV stations are used to people having old TVs that due to screen limitations or their plastic bezels hide the little extra picture space that you are seeing.

You can switch to a 16:9 or zoom mode but then you are not doing a 1:1 on the pixels and you will lose picture sharpness and possibly introduce some artifacts. Personally, I'd just get used to the line or the dots or complain to the TV station.

Possibly the "Halo affect"? Anyway, I have seen them both and honestly they seem identical. maybe the settings you had on the A750 were not quite right?

Anyway, both are the best out there right now. Enjoy....

The digital and analog audio outputs are passed through with no processing and are thus ahead of the panel display as well as the speaker/headphones.

I doubt Samsung is addressing this issue, I believe it is a hardware issue that cannot be addressed by firmware, but I am no authority on this. I think it's one of those "That's not a defect, that's a design feature" sort of things.

Thanks for the reply. To me it seems like a design flaw that all audio outputs are not delayed the same amount.

The good new is that their are no obvious synch problems between any of the audio outputs and the video display. You just can't use multiple audio outputs simutaneously.

yeah I hear you, but after watching so much olympics on TV , it just looks BAD. Last night, after different tweak, USA HD channel look real good for 'Law and Order'.. but this morning, I was watching usa men's basketball and quality was once again bad. Could it be the cable itself??
I wish there was something to test .. to see whether it's tv or cable.
I really don't want to return.. it's big pain in the a** and it's going to cost me.. but if this is faulty parts of the tv, I will return even if it cost me restocking fee.

The TV is fine: the problem is the source of what you are watching. HD material with a lot of motion or shot changes can look bad when its broadcasted with a lot of compression.

Try getting your hands on a Blu-ray player (like a Playstation 3) and hook that up to your TV via HDMI. Watch some HD movies and you won't want to return your set.

I just bought the ln52a650 instead of the Sony on 8/8 from amazon and couldn't be happier. I got it 20% off list with no tax and free shipping. They just reduced the price today so I got a price match to 24% off . Delivery was quick 5 days and professionally done. My final objections to my purchase were the TOC bezel and the shiney screen (my old Toshiba 57 had a shiney screen) and if you were seated at times you could see the room lamps in it. This set has exceeded my expectations on both; the shiney screen is a non-event since this set is so powerful it overwhelms any reflections from the sun or room lights and gives an excellent dark scene detail in return ... the TOC bezel was the biggest surprise, the only way I can describe it is that up close it looks like an expensive dark burgandy wood looking frame - there is no red plastic any where on it. After playing with it for a week I can see why it was voted number one by *onsumer *eports... this set is amazing...

This is a technical site for technical discussion.

I'll probably get in trouble for speaking my mind, but the simple truth is that the free flow of information is good for the people that come here, and restrictions on the flow of some of that information (particularly pricing and "where to buy") is good for the advertisers that come here to sell to those people. The value of this site is in the users who come here and the posts they make that draw other users. I hope those who run AVSForum make a good profit, but I'd also like to see them tell their advertisers that they won't restrict what gets said (provided it's legal).

If an advertiser's product/service is any good, it will stand up to what people want to say about it.

If it was really a matter of "nobody wants to hear it" there wouldn't be so many posts on the subject. In reality, most people come here the first time when researching a potential purchase, and "pricing" and "where to buy" are two very critical bits of information that buyers really do "want to hear."

If it's truly a case of this subject "ruins" technical threads, then open a thread where those who want to discuss such issues can go. So that's off my chest. I'll say goodbye now, just in case my account is closed tomorrow.

Hi, all ---

Got this TV from Big River a couple of weeks ago. I've encountered a problem that I've seen addressed elsewhere in various forums, but from what I can tell there has never been a good answer. Maybe someone has new info? Anyway, here goes:

I *used* to be able to get full HD and faux HD (i.e., 1920 as well as 1360) from my laptop through PC Mode/VGA with the 650. It worked GREAT for two weeks. Then, boom, no dice. Just a bunch of bogus resolutions. The only thing I tried between "working" and "not working" was the USB input to look at some photos from a digital camera. Even did "safe-removal," as if that could make a difference.

What the problem is NOT:
1) VGA cable. It used to work. And I tried others. No difference.
2) The laptop. No change to the laptop. Also tried other computers that used to work, and now they don't work either.
3) A need to reset the TV to factory settings. Did that. No difference.
4) The firmware. Haven't changed it, and it's the latest.

Any thoughts??? This is a bear of a problem!

Came home today and had a package from Samsung that said a Free gift from Samsung. Inside was the Samsung Wireless lan Adapter for Infolink.

I thought this was someting I would have had to buy. I bought this TV a few months ago.

FWIW, I never would have bought my A650 online if it was not mentioned here. I saved myself about $600!!!!

BTW, I think posting LINKS to vendor sites is not allowed, but you are allowed to mention that you bought at XYZ Company at a great price. At least that's how I see posts going.

Also, just a bit of information for those who want to use "just scan" with FIOS or cable Motorola STB's and not have the green line up the right hand side....go into the hidden menu and change color space settings to RGB.....however, some sets experience a 1" "clear" beveled edge on the left side of the screen.

Hi ,

my coworker has different cable provider(dish network HD) and he's been watching olympic on his 58 inch 650 samsung.. and he sees no motion blur at all. I am going over to his house fri to check it out before making determination but it's been very frustrating.
If 120HZ technology cannot make motion blur better(as they advertise), I might as well save the money and get 550.......

I am really considering just taking the 15% loss and then order from frys or amazon to make up the difference..

But I am studying my tv every night to see if I see the light at the end of the tunnels...

ps: I do have ps3.. at the begining, I did watch blu ray movies and 'soap opera' effect were very evident.
Ever since I messed w/ service menu and also the fact that when I got Sony ct-100(stereo equipment) screen start blinking so much that now .. too much blinking that I had to switch back to cable to hdmi connection to tv ..
I am not sure if that caused problem...

also, make sure the digital noise reduction is off on your TV... it can add some blurring. (which incidentally seems to be responsible for the blurring of some HD broadcasts, since they try to do heavy noise reduction to compress the video more efficiently)
