Resetting should not affect the picture quality at all.. I think you're just seeing the difference between your calibrated setting and the default setting.

It would be a HUGE issue if this was actually true... and we'd know about it by now.

westa6969, is the line conditioner really worth it even if you don't have any issues?
Will I see any improvement in picture/sound by using it?

Cool. That's what I guessed and told my dad originally, that it was a design feature of the LCD panel itself, and the AMP was probably just something that messed with the video processing logic.

I just have noticed that my picture quality has gotten worse. The SD picture is very blurry and it wasn't like that when I bought the TV. What could be causing this issue?

The 800U and the A650 are both great TVs, it was hard for me to decide, but I got the A650 just because I trust LCDs more than plasmas and also I trust Samsung more than Panasonic.

Yes Both are awesome but i trust panasonic more than Samsung and Plasma more than LCD.

yup and with 1080p/24fps movies (blu ray) you would want to set AMP to off to get the proper 24fps effect.

Turn Auto Volume on in the Sound menu.

mine appears to have the same type of thing. it does not seems to affect the picture quality and i cannot see it unless i look at it from the side (mine is on the left side of my tv). i assumed it was just some packaging stuck in between the frame and screen

let me know how you make out with it.

btw what are you using to clean your tv

You can turn off 120hz completely right ?
The 46 incher is on it's way to my house. What's a good video clip or diagnostic dvd that I could quickly run to check for dead pixels. I have the bigriver white glove delivery thing so supposedly if it's messed up I can refuse delivery after opening it.

Bright light and viewing from the side would be good enough to check for the purple tint right?

If you want to turn "off" 120Hz, get a 60Hz set. That would save you some bucks.

I have FW 2003.0

Just wanted to post that I have this problem as well. I also have firmware 2003.0. I've checked around and it seems to happen mostly with those who have a Motorola Cable box and this firmware. It's very annoyig. It happens once every 2-3 days and shutting to the tv off for a little bit then turning it back on seems to fix the problem, but I don't want to have to do that all the time. Someone even posted this problem on the Samsung CNET forum but the official Samsung tech guy hasn't responded. Is this something that can be fixed by Samsung issuing a firmware? I'm not bothering to exchange my box cause I know that won't fix the problem as others have already tried that and have not had any success.

Sometimes, there are no excuses

+1 to this. However, the search system only works IF you actually know what you're talking about and have a clue about the specific problem.

Problem is, many HD newbies have no idea what "calibration" or "DNR" or "AMP" or many other terms mean, let alone how to ask a reasonable question or perform a valid search. Hence, the same basic type of questions will appear again and again.

It would be helpful IMHO if there were a section with the "Top 10 FAQ's" or something like that, where all new Sammy LCD purchasers could start.
How about we each post one and compile them together when we have all the basic stuff covered?
  • AMP - Auto Motion Plus
    - Removes drag from fast scenes with a lot of movement to provide a clearer picture. (As per manual)
    - Programming may appear like 'soap opera', to avoid this, turn this feature off or set it at low.
  • DNR - Digital Noise Reduction
    - If the broadcast signal received by your TV is weak, you can activate the Digital Noise Reduction feature to help reduce any static and ghosting that may appear on the screen. (Manual)
  • DNIe - Digital Natural Image engine
    - This TV includes the DNIe function to provide high visual quality. If you set DNIe to on, you can view the screen with the DNIe feature activated.
    - Only available in "Dynamic" mode
  • 120hz
  • cleaning
  • sound cut-off
  • purple haze
  • clouding
  • flashlights
  • shut-off
  • HDMI-CEC

I know I'm missing some in the list, so let's collaborate and put this thing together!

Yeah it's definitely a problem with 2003.0. My advice is to do what I did, just switch to 2001.3 firmware via the Samsung website. It doesn't have as much "pop" in my opinion (I know everyone says they're all the same) but I couldn't take the audio issue.

I'm looking at getting a new tv and the 650 is on my very short list. I'm concerned about the glossy screen. I have a older Hitachi RPTV and during the day it's unwatchable to me from the side because of the windows in the room. Will the 650 be the same in the same room set-up? How much glare is taken away if you wall mount with tilt?

Thanks

This TV does not have that problem man compared to other LCDs who are "unwatchab;e" like U said.

Go for it !

Hi Folks,

This is probably a bit of a noobish question, so I'll apologize in advance! I'm considering the LN46A650, but am concerned about pixelation issues. My GF has an older Samsumg 46" LCD (Not sure about model number, but ~2-3 years old now), which shows some pretty severe pixelation in darkers areas and out-of-focus backgrounds where there should be a smooth gradient (is this what's meant by "false contouring"?). In some cases, the picture with HD materal looks scarcely better than a compressed mpeg, and can be hard to watch! Is this something that's common to all LCD flat panels, or are there units that don't have this issue? How does this unit stand up in this department? From the image in post #24 of this thread.

(Link deleted as it won't let me post URL's)

it looks like there may be some issues with pixelation, but as another member pointed out, it's really hard to say from a compressed digital photo displayed on my laptop's LCD.

Unfortunately I'd have to drive for 1hr+ in order to look at one of these in person, since the local BB doesn't stock the 550, 650 or 750 in any size! I'm hoping some of you can give me an idea of whether/how bad a problem this is on this unit before I place an order for it, since I find it pretty distracting and a possible deal breaker! Thanks all!

He said his RPTV was unwatchable.
It depends on where your windows are and how much control you have on the lighting. The easiest thing to do is to invest in som dark, heavy curtains for serious TV/movie watching.
Even if you decide not to buy new curtains, if windows you mentioned are not behind you, you should be okay. If they are, maybe some re-configuration of your room will do wonders.

Sounds like you are seeing macroblocking -- try turning off the noise reduction feature on your GF's set. This artifact can also appear on overly-compressed channels (cable or satellite.)

The 650/750 have fantastic PQ. The image processors do a great job, and the end result is free of macroblocking and/or color banding. There is not much the set will be able do do, however, if the source is highly compressed.

Your GF must have a lower end version of Samsung LCD.. My 32" is 2 years old and it's been amazing so far. No pixellation at all.

The 650 will be great, but I'd suggest you still drive to a store that carries it and look at the thing yourself. It's a beauty!

Just got the LN52A650 yesterday from amazon. I was so excited I just plugged in my Comcast box, PS3. I spent 6 hours last night viewing watching a little I Robot (blu ray), switching over to Discovery HD, watching a little Harry Potter on blu ray, upconverting a little LOTR. God, this TV is amazing. Now all I need to do is find some time to calibrate it.
