Surround/Centre Size Setting

Hi there!

I recently bought a bunch of Wharfedale Diamonds (a pair of 9.6 fronts, two 9.1's for surrounds and a Cs centre) but I'm a little unsure of how I should set the 'Speaker Size' setting on my receiver (Marantz SR5002).

Obviously I have the two 9.6's set to large, but what of the rest? The 9.1's are by no means feeble, nor is the centre. I wouldn't want them to go to waste only delivering high frequencies, but I would not want to overload them either... So can you guys please give me some advice on this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Well if the speakers are large then shem to large you don't want big speakers to sound small!

The general rule is that if your spkr can handle all of the deep explosive sounds on todays movies without overworking the amplifier than you can set the spkrs to large.
However if you add a subwoofer to the spkr pkg that has lots of power....say two or three hundred watts, then your whole system now has lots of headroom (extra reserve power). Let the appx 90 watt per channel drive all the spkrs set to small and your sub do all of the heavy lifting. You will get more dynamic range, more volume this way.

Well the 9.1's are sort of bookshelf speakers... They are not like tiny satellite speakers - they are sold as as primary speakers for stereo/HT systems (but of course they also make good surrounds) and I have seen them reviewed alongside mini monitor speakers. So you see, I wasn't too sure whether they would be classed as large or small. The centre is of the same build of the 9.1's (uses two of the 9.1 drivers and the same tweeter).

Try both and see what sounds better... Personally, I like the subwoofer to handle everything below 80Hz for movies, regardless "if" the speakers are capable. It takes a HUGE load off the amp and the speakers seem to produce the other freq's better. But then again, this is just in my setup and my preference.

Then set them to large.

Doesn't your manual explain this?

According to the Wharfdale website: http://www.wharfedale.co.uk/range.php?range_id=3 the 9.6's have much deeper bass response than the 9.1's or the Cs. Therefore, you're best bet is to set the 9.1's to "Small" with an 80 Hz crossover. This will redirect the bass to the 9.6's.

Then go buy a subwoofer and set all your speakers to "Small".

Hi,

I have a similar situation but I have a question, If I have a sub and set the speakers to small, will I not get a bland or weak sound out of the front speakers when listening to stuff on stereo or not on 5.1?

thanks

That is what I wanted to know. Thank you, and everyone else who has contributed to this thread

It's hard to tell exactly what your ADP 303 does with stereo. I suspect it still engages the crossover and routes the bass to the sub. Does the sub play when you use a stereo source?
