Remember - they still have to leave things so they can eventually come out with the "highest resolution and quality available to the public at the present time so that we can charge more for the same thing again" version.

Along with the proper gear to play it with and the display to show it appropriately on, etc.

At 720x480, perhaps. Most SD channels on cable are 528x480 though, so even with an excess of bitrate they aren't going to be anything great to look at.

Has any changes been made from the original 2008 video quality in the OP's screenshots to now?

You'll have to read the entire 70 page topic for the details, but bottom line is yes, Comcast had drastically improved the QAM 3 packed HD channel image quality.

I'm gonna try to read it all but it's gonna be hard not to start correcting posts lol

So are we still using MPEG2 or have we graduated to MPEG4/H.264? I'm curious what MPEG-H aka H.265 is going to bring to the table when its completed in 2013.

I've read somewhere that the 3D channels are MPEG4, but I don't know if,that's true or not. As far as I know all other channels are MPEG2.

yeah the 3D channels are MPEG4 because it has to carry two massive streams at the same time, I'm just curious about the rest.

Some areas are using MPEG4 for 3D, however, most are still using MPEG2.


It is really just the same size as 1 HD channel, as broadcast 3D is half resolution.

Is the picture quality being discussed here based off of digital set top boxes, devices with cablecards like TiVo and Moxi, or just televisions with QAM tuners, because I would think that those devices would affect the processing of the signal, if only a little bit. I mean the newest set top boxes, and the newest TiVo and Moxi have a lot more horsepower then the stuff a lot of cable companies are still floating around from 2004.
