- Sharp 46D64U or Samsung 4669?

Ok, here is the deal...

I can get a Sharp 46D64U
I can also get a Samsung 4669

Sharp is 60hz, 4ms, 10,000:1 contrast
Samsung is 120hz, 6ms, 20,000:1 contrast

Which should I go for?

Can I turn off the 120hz on the Samsung to get rid of TBE, etc?
Do I take the chance

I have to make this decision soon, so...what shall it be?

wow both are pretty good HDTVs go with the Samsung.

Samsung . . . easy choice. But the Sharp is a good TV.

The price on that Samsung will likely fall below $2K when the 46in A650 arrives.

I prefer the Sharp. Both good brands. However, I thought the Sharp looks slightly sharper over the Samsung. The colors look slightly better on the Sharp as well. Black levels are relatively equal.

I think totally the opposite IMO the Samsung blows the Sharp out of the water, much better blacks, color reprodution and over all better picture on the Samsung so mos def go with the Samsung, besides I still keep hearing about banding problems with the Sharp still till this day

What is TBE?

Get the Samsung 4669

I'd definitely opt for the Samsung in this case. Whatever advantages Sharp may have in an "all else being equal" environment, it's not an equal fight here. The 20,000:1 contrast ratio can't be ignored. I've compared both panels, and the Samsung model is much more vivid. You also can't really ignore the 120Hz panel. It's not a cure-all, but it should more than make up for the gap in the pixel response time.

I am not saying go with the Sharp, but do not trust contrast ratios, especially dynamic ones. They are not accurate. Also, from my research, it seems that the 120Hz creates more problems than it fixes. In all honesty I would stay away from 120Hz until they have them working properly, and judge the TVs with your eyes, not the numbers on the box. Whichever looks better to you is the one to get.

IMO, you shouldn't get hung up on specs. Trust your eyes, compare them in the store and go with what YOU think is best. I know people claim that particular brands/models can really shine when properly calibrated but on Brand X (it's pie) and Brand Y (it's an Act of Congress - the Continental one).

But as others have noted, store displays are often set on 'Torch' mode but being BRIGHT will not make a crappy TV look good. It's just easier to notice how crappy it is.

On topic, I just haven't seen any LCDs that look better than Sammy 69/71/81 or the Sony XBR4/5. If price wasn't an issue, I just don't see buying any other LCD. But an intelligent person (that's already spent that tax rebate) is probably better served to spend much less on a TV from (Sharp, Tosh, Phillips or even JVC/Westy/Vizio) . . . if you think it looks good enough.

The 69F is basically the 71F, minus a little bit of contrast ratio and plus a matte screen instead of glossy. The 69F is the way to go, and I am a little disappointed in creemail's comments. Until reading his post, I trusted his opinion on AV gear.

Guys, guys, guys. First of all, I am a plasma guy. I am trying to be fair. Everything on the forums is completely objective vs. subjective. We do not have the hours, time, and preparation to compare them both side by side. This includes same environment, source material, ISF calibration settings, etc....I only mentioned this to the OP because some the Sharp's don't look bad when you first view them. This does not mean that the Samsung is meant for everyone. Some people prefer Sharp over Samsung. This does not mean that the Sharp is not comparable to the Samsung by no means...

What is funny....is that when the new Sharp LCDs release with Kuro-like features we will all be Sharp fans!

I personally would choose the Panasonic 46PZ85U over either of these displays...

OK...

My decision was made for me... When I went to "Add to Cart", there was an additional $100 off the Samsung 4669....

So I did it... I just made the plunge, and ordered the Samsung 4669

I think this'll be a nice upgrade from the Samsung 4061 I had before...

Crossing my fingers I get one without deal pixels!

I choose Sharp panels also. I have a LN-T5265F and a 42d64u. Do you have or have you had both brands in house to compare? I hope so because I would hate to be disappointed by your bias and inexperience.

Well, I went to Future Shop, and saw both models side-by-side... They both looked pretty good, though the edge for blackness does go to the Samsung 4669. I find it total bull-crap that they claim 20,000:1 contrast ratio and the Sharp 10,000:1. The difference is definately NOT twice better, but there still is a slight difference...

My only concern with the Samsung was the TBE effect, but I guess, you have the option to turn AMP on/off with the new firmware, so I can pick and choose when I want to use it...

Other than that, I will miss the thinness of the Sharp panel.... those are super-thin panels!

i would have went sharp they make a great tv

I have a sharp 46-64u an 8-01 build.
If I could find someone to buy my sharp I would sell it and get the samsung.
Sharp says it has 4 ms but it is called fine motion and is software and makes the picture too dark.
All the mags I read on the sharp tell you to turn it off.
I knew I was had when I connected the TV to a bluray and watched spiderman the picture is SHARPLESS!

I own both a LN-T4065F and an LC-42D64U.

The 65F is a much nicer TV than the D64, and the 69F/71F series is a good step up from the 65F. This is what I am basing my decision on.
