I encountered a similar problem last week, where the left half of the screen had vertical lines. The lines were there regardless of the video source, so it was definitely a problem with the TV. Once I turned it off and on again, the lines disappeared and have not returned. My set is about 5 months old.

Unfortunately mine aren't going after turning the tv off then back on.

Anyone had a panel replaced lately? Seemed to be a lot of talk earlier but not so much now. Just curious what Samsung is doing, my A650 is really starting to bug me. I'd call but I paid $$$ to have it calibrated and I'll be out the cash. I waited a couple of months before calibrating just in case, guess it wasn't long enough. I still have plenty of time, got in in March plus got the 3 month extension for registering it online, and used AMEX for another year. At this point I'd rather have them replace it with a B650, especially since I'd be out the calibration fee. Not sure what to do.

Could the scrolling burn-in protection cause it? I had some image retention and ran that for a while and that was when I started to notice it. I'm going to leave the screen all white for awhile and see if it gets rid of it. It's only really noticeable on bright solid colors but it's bugging the hell out of me.

I've had my panel replaced and the inputs circuit board with no luck. I've had a total of 3 service calls to my house and the problem has actually gotten worst. I recently called Samsung and told them that at this point I've owned the set for about 3 months and want a replacement set at this point. I'm supposed to get a call back tomorrow to discuss how they will proceed with my situation.

Hopefully they will give me a new set because I don't want a refurbished set given that I purchased a new set.

I too have the pn50a550

I hear that the series six will playback mp4 video files - has anyone heard if there is a firmware upgrade or a hack that will allow the 5 series sets to do this too?

Has anyone had a an circle show up in the middle of their screen that is outlined in grey? The diameter is the length from the bottom to top of the screen. It is not burn in as I have never left an image on the tv of that size and position on the screen. Looks like a grey outline of a sun. It is very noticable on sky pictures and in the all white screen mode.

Press the Menu button on your remote, scroll down to the Plug & Play menu and turn off Energy Saving. For whatever reason, that circle shows up when the Energy Saving feature is turned on. If you're concerned about saving energy, turn down the Contrast instead.

I have an opportunity to purchase a PN58A550 floor model from Future Shop for $1999 Canadian. I don't know how long the set has been on the wall, but the store it is in is only about 6 months old. Should I be able to get a better deal than this? I'm thinking of asking for a throw in of an extended warranty. Any other suggestions?

I would say to just save up and get the newer pn58b550. It's only a few hundred dollars more and it's been said to be much better than last years a series.

I would recommend not getting a A-series at this point either. MSRPs on the newer B series are lower to begin with so there should be price discounts that put a B series panel close to the price of a demo A series. And I would never purchase a demo plasma panel from anybody. The B650 and higher have CMS controls that can make color extremely accurate but you have to have a meter or pro calibration to make use of those controls - the B550 doesn't have the CMS controls (or so I'm told anyway, I have worked on B650s but not B550s).

Just chiming in, been a little while. Have had my pn50a550 since March of 08, still looks amazing and have had 0 issues since the day I bought it.

Finally mounted my Plasma and purchased a new triple 20 Salamander rack for my audio equipment and thought I'd post the pic. Sorry for the poor quality, it's off my blackberry as my camera battery died (and my wife left the charger at her aunts!).

Incredible how much better to me the PQ looks now that it's mounted, could be that I have a slightly better angle of view (i.e., looking slightly up at it versus down). Or maybe it's just me justifying the pain and time it took to get that sucker up there!!

Pic: Hopefully you can make out what I'm describing.

So does anyone have any advice about this? Should I call up Samsung?

Yes. Contact Samsung. It's not normal.

Could also be because the screen is closer to the back wall, maybe increasing the perceived color saturation or contrast.

Well, picked up a new Oppo BDP-83 and decided to recalibrate my set. Probably the best calibration to date with almost ruler flat Gamma and only a couple bumps in the grey scale. All colors at 2 or below except blue and magenta as usual.

One interesting thing, had to bump up contrast to 90 to get to 35ftL, if I recall before I only had to take it to 85. Guess as the set ages I'll need to turn up contrast. But will have to go into the SM eventually to see if I can extend the range of contrast given that I'm already at 90!

All in all I'd say this was the best my set has looked. Tons of depth to the image. Could probably work on those humps at 40 and 50 at the expense of 20/30, but always find 40/50 on my set is tough to control without sacrificing more elsewhere with the two point convergence system used. Unless Doug has any reccos!
Here's a clearer pic btw (taken pre calibration and the flash washes out the screen before anyone comments!!)

Hmm, now that I've had my panel for 15 months, I'll probably have to bump up the contrast, too, although I have no idea by how much since I don't have a calibration doohickey (and don't know how to use one, anyhow). I suppose I'll just arbitrarily bump up the contrast by a few notches, then recheck the brightness with a pluge pattern.

mine is getting the image retention lot more noticeable than usual, yeah i do play games, but even notice it now watching HD channels, like the ABC logo, it goes away adventually. Wondering if there is anything i can do to fix in the settings, or if getting my TV calibrated will help im considering getting the B550 model for my spare bedroom, just hoping this will be fixed with maybe the new plasma panels. I have had my a550 since January
post #5396 of 5624
I just saw something about turning the contrast down to reduce the ir, is there a good setting number to keep the contrast to get much more minimal burn in
post #5397 of 5624
Hey gang. I bought the PN50A550 way back in December and dont have many complaints except my Blacks are greenish. Believe me I know it is the way I have my Plasma colors set up as I have created my own setting for "pop" when I watch sports. Do you guys have any suggestions to fix this. Thanks

Probably means your grey scale is off, you can try turning the G-Offset in the detailed settings (white balance) option down say 2 points, but without measurements with a proper instrument it's really a crap shoot and you could be doing more bad than good. But you can always go back to default if you don't like it I guess.

Can you please let us know your new settings? I've also had my set for a while now and I'm wondering if I should change anything.

Honestly, without proper instruments to measure the light output on your set this would be an absolute guess. All I know with my set is that I need to pump it up 5 on the contrast scale from what I used before to get 35ftL of light ouput according to my meter.

Now, who knows, maybe it's my meter that could be off.

But I've also had the set for over 1.5 years now, and it likely has a ton of use on it. Whether or not your set has the same use and the same wear, no one can tell.
