Klipsch RF-62/RC-62...Need AVR recommendation

Thread Starter
Without getting into seperates, I'm looking for an AVR that can provide a fair amount of clean power to my 5.1 Klipsch set-up, including RF-62's, RC-62 and RB-10's (along with a Epik Knight sub).

I don't really pay much attention to manufacturers rated power specs, so I'm looking for some firsthand experience with receivers that make good power (5-channels driven) and can do the RF-62's and RC-62 justice.

Processing of the new HD audio formats is not a must, but will be considered. I do currently have an HD-DVD player and may add a blu-ray player down the road.

I'm considering models from the following manufacturers...

Marantz
Onkyo
Harman Kardon

Budget is $600 or less.

Thanks.

I know this is old, but I am curious too. I have the same fronts and center and RB-51's as my surrounds. Any words of advice?

I have a set of RB-61s with an RC-52 and four RS-42s being driven by an Onkyo 804. I've used this setup for close to two years. Great sounding speakers. An upgrade from a Cerwin Vega home theater speaker system from the mid-90s.

I have Klipsch RS5, RC7, and RS35 system. I used to have Denon. Then I sold it and bought an Onkyo 805 and a H/K 645. The Onkyo was no match for the H/K. In fact, I was able to get the better H/K 745 refurbished. For music especially, the H/K embarasses the Onkyo. For HT both sound great, but H/K still has the edge.

The Klipsch's are very efficient speakers, so any quality AVR will work with them. I prefer the Pioneer's, but the better Harmon Kardon or Denon AVRs are good too. It's more important to get the features you want (number of inputs and type, etc.).

bommai -- I was interested in your experience with the H/K and Onkyo. I knew that some of the Onkyo's had problems, but I didn't realize that the H/K's were actually better. I know that the H/K power ratings are very conservative, so their "low" raed outputs are actually quite good. I'm glad to hear that.

Currently, I've been looking into the Pioneer Elite VSX-92TXH, VSX-94TXH, and Yamaha RX-V1800, although I've heard good things about HK, especially with Klipsch. I can get the Pioneers and Yamaha at a discount, so that is a factor.

I have upgraded from a Yamaha RX-V663 pushing some RB-51's and an RPW-10 and I thought they sounded great.

I was thinking about buying RF-62 5.1 system.

I was curious if the Denon AVR-3808CI was powerful enough to power the speakers? I listen to metal and rock so I wanted the speakers to have lots of "umph". The center channel has a RMS Power Rating of 150w, but the receiver has power output of 130w. Is this dangerous?

Are these speakers overkill for a 14' by 17' room?

Thanks in advance.

I have Klipsch RB-61s, an RC-52 & RS-42s (along with an RW-10d sub) running off a Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K & am 100% pleased with it.

Champino, don't fret over the power ratings. It will be fine. The main rule to abide by is not to turn the volume up to a point that the sound distorts. If you hear distortion back off the volume a bit. You could power your speakers with 30 watts. You may not be able to turn it up very loud though before it distorts. As far as overpowering speakers there is virtually no such thing. (within reason, I wouldn't feed one of your speakers 1000 watts as the woofers would likely go beyond their normal "in and out" limits) As a general rule the more power the better, it will give you headroom for clean output at high volume levels resulting in crystal clear sound and tight punchy bass.

Champino, I forgot to give you the bottom line on all that. Yes the Denon should be just fine for your speakers.

To the OP: I know you didn't mention Pioneer, but I have now had 2 Pioneer Elite receivers with my Klipsch RF 35s, RF 25s, and RC 35. Both have been a great match.

I have Klipsch RF62 and RC52 and RS42. Driving those with Pioneer Elite vsx 54TX. So far good. But I am buying a Sunfire TGA5200 amp to add to this set up. Planning to bi-wire them and see how much of a sound improvement I get. Heard that it should be significant, considering TGA5200 has a list price of $2750! Anyone has been there, done that?

I got a huge leap in sound quality when I went from a Denon AVR 2803 to HK AVR 247 and then later AVR 745. I have Klipsch RF5, RC7, RS35 setup.

The most consistent matches with the Klipsch Reference IV series seem to be...

HK. Not the most up to date on features necessarily but consistently great sounding match with Klipsch Ref IV.

Pioneer Elite. More and more guys happy with that combo.

Marantz. Consistently good combo.

Denon. Mixed reactions. $1000+ units seem to be better.

Onkyo. Mixed Reactions.

Yamaha. Very Mixed reactions...some negative/bright comments.

Sony. Few good reactions.

YMMV

I have Klipsch RF62 and RC52 with RS42 .... ordered a Sunfire TGA5200 amp today. Eventually my speakers are going to be replaced soon by B&W 703.
But it will be interesting to see how Sunfire impact the SQ! I will continue using my Elite Pioneer vsx 54TX as pre anyway for now. Anyone has experience with Klipsch/Sunfire combo?
