Oh gotcha. The extras on the U.K BD wasn't playable on NTSC only players.

Anyone know what a "Sub Ocrd Rpkg" version of a BD is? Is it just a repackaging or could it be a whole new transfer?

Close enough!? ********! I remember when I first put the US disc in I could immediately tell something was wrong. Even to the point where I had to check my equipment.

It's a "new" oscar edition. Should be no different.

And the price isn't horrendous on that version either. Should be interesting to see how much the non-LE version goes for. I don't care about trinkets or special packaging.

Wow, that looks awesome! I wish I could see how "big" it is next to a normal size Blu-ray...if it's a similar height to a standard Blu-ray, I'm all over that...

Nice, Mignola's poster art on the cover! Will have to keep an eye on this.

Hmmm... unless WB did a complete remaster for some sort of special edition release, which is highly unlike them, this is probably the previous U.S. encode slathered with DNR as it has 7.1 channel DTS-MA Spanish audio.

The 7.1 audio re-mix was specifically done for New Line Home Video by Mi Casa Multimedia (they do most of the 7.1 home theater mixes) when the studio wasn't completely under the control of WB Home Video.
Asians know how to mix 7.1 surround themselves, there is no reason why they should licence it from Warner.
That may be, but Mi Casa, so far, does the best overall job of retooling the stems to an active 7.1 mix.

In order to do a true 7.1 remix you have to have the original soundtrack stems (dialog, music, sound effects, etc. digital multi-tracks). The Hollywood studios don't just lend them out willy-nilly (and they often never do unless an audio post house like Mi Casa has been given permission and/or hired to do a near-field home theater mix using these archival audio stems).

Unless they used the 7.1 mix already done, it's very likely they washed the 5.1 track through a ProLogic IIx decoder or some other DSP device in order to create a pseudo 7.1 mix.

If it's being released by WB's Asian division and not some third-party Asian distribution company then it probably is the same 7.1 mix as the U.S. disc, which is not a bad thing at all. Again, it's very well done.

Well, I'm going to be optimistic because I have to pre-order it, otherwise my $5 coupon at YesAsia will expire.

The film was a co-production between Spain and Mexico. New Line/Warner was just the distributor in USA.

now for the important question...

DNR?
Does the Korean version have subtitles for the special features, or just the film?

I finally received my copy from YesAsia.com. It looks like everything indeed was done by Warner. It is horrible.

1. Disc art/text says that it was "Made in USA"
2. It only uses 29.3GB
3. Low bitrate VC1 encode
4. Horrible DNR

Plus the "special packaking" is only a slipcase. I'm very disappointed.

Disappointing, but I am delighted, at least, that someone finally reported on it. The "not knowing" was the worst...

yeah i'll just go with the UK disc then

i was hoping someone would release a disc that combined the UK video with the US audio but i guess it wasn't meant to be

The Korean release looked hot. I'm tempted to buy it.

Made some quite random screenshots (with MPC HC):

wow.. yeah that's some serious DNR

I guess Warner took that old New Line's encode and reencoded it with additional DNR and lower bitrate. It is the worst DNR that I have ever seen...

Comparison with the US release (Xylon's screenshots, I think he used different renderer, his screenshots are more redish).

this blows. was also hoping for the best of both worlds release. oh well.

I compared my BDinfo report with the US release and it seems to be exactly the same encode. I guess I'll try to sell my copy for half the price that I paid for it or even less.

I just got my copy of the UK BD and did some live comparisons with the US BD.

It's a very tough decision but I think I'll be sticking with the US disc. I'm on a 61" DLP from 9' away, and I can definitely a see difference in fine detail. However the difference in audio to me is more noticeable than the difference in video. The 5.1 DD track sounds too brittle and unnatural compared to the lossless 7.1. I went back and forth quite a bit, and I honestly found the sound on the UK disc to be more distracting than the video on the US release.

I feel like I should hang onto both but I'll probably sell the UK disc.

The scandinavian edition has a "new" AVC encode and DTS-HD MA track. But no english subtitles. So I guess it doesnt help for most of you.

Do you have any more technical information (BDInfo report?) or screenshots?
