That's good news...his was probably the most key signing for the movie.

Now, they just have to find someone for Bilbo. Ian Holm will be too old for the part unless they do some crazy makeup/CGI work.

Ian McKellen is also going to need some heavy makeup/CGI work to make him a young(er) Gandalf. Maybe some of that stuff they are using to take all the wrinkles away from the televised appearances of a certain woman who is running for President....

His Gandolf character was already heavily prosthetic'd and made up. Plus I don't think Wizards ever look anything other than 'old'.

For a character that's supposed to be pretty much immortal what's a century going to matter?

I'd like to see Paul Giamatti for Bilbo ! If you seen him in the John Adams mini-series on HBO you can get a good idea of how well he physically fits the roll

Wow, that is an excellent suggestion...I had never thought of that...

A different take than Ian Holm for sure...but Giamatti definitely looks "hobbit" like...

Just as they cast a young Elijah Wood in the Frodo role, they'll probably do something similar with Bilbo. In the books they both set out on their adventure at the same age ~ 50. For LOTR they probably wanted to attract the younger demographic...I expect the same for TH.

True and they've already established the hobbit "look" with these teen idol guys so they'll probably keep that look for consistancy...

More good news, Howard shore is returning as main composer and has already been working on ideas since he finished working the two towers.
