Can I just buy a Blu ray player and watch movies without my player have BD live or updating its firmware?
No, you don't need BD Live.
However, it's entirely possible that a a newly released movie may reveal playback issues that only a firmware update can fix. I would not recommend ignoring the firmware-update process.
This is not a new thing. I've had two different DVD players (a Toshiba and a Pioneer) going back several years, that required firmware updates to deal with certain discs. For example, the original release of "The Matrix" on DVD "broke" quite a lot of EDVD players.
