Projector Calibration-What is the best option for the average user?

Thread Starter
I just saw that the Spyder3Elite ($250) will calibrate front projection displays (though its step down sibling the Pro will not) and I was wondering if it makes more sense for someone to buy this equipment which will calibrate every display you're likely to own in your life versus paying $400+ every time you need a new display ISF calibrated. For those who have used it (or for professional calibrators that have an opinion), can the average user expect to get comparable results to that of an ISF calibrator? (if not, why not and how far off?). (Professional calibrators: don't throw rocks at me, I don't doubt that your equipment and calibration skill are superior to anything I can buy, I'm just trying to figure out what's practical). Calibration, in my opinion, is not optional on displays that cost many thousands of dollars, but I also feel that my TV which was calibrated with DVE stands to gain from a better calibration.

I also see that DVE has just released HD Basics as well as other manufacturers Blu-ray and HD-DVD offerings, are any of these <$50 offerings better than the others and how do they compare to a Spyder3Elite or a professional ISF calibration?

Thanks for the information...

The fact that you are even considering getting a colorimeter system says that you are not an "average user". As has been reported in the Calibration Forum, there are much better measurement systems available than the Spyder3Elite, and for less money.

If you are really an "average user", you are better off learning to use DVE, or any other calibration DVD, well. ISF calibration will get you better results than doing it yourself (for more money, of course). Getting, and using, a colorimeter system will yield an improvement over just using a calibration DVD, but only if you are willing to spend the time to really learn how to use it (again, not for the "average user"). DIY calibration will not get you as good a result compared to what you can get by hiring a good, qualified, calibration professional.

The new DVE HD Basics is supposed to be a real improvement over the older DVE (per GeorgeAB, and he said it's easier to use - see the Calibration Forum). With any DIY approach, you need to really spend the time to learn how to use it, and a lot of practice and patience. You do not get something for nothing.

There was a post recently on using a cheap colorometer and free software developed on this site that had good results.

Thats good to hear, always nice to have options on hand. I recently bought the GetGray disc from the creator hear on AVS, its a good place to start and and better than the original DVE, I think it should be priced at $20 though. I think I'll also grab me the new DVE-HD Blu-Ray if its getting good reviews.
