Ripped DVD playback in Vista

Through many searches and much reading on many forums I still have not come across a comparison between DVD playback using VMC Media Player 11 and other software based players such as TheaterTek, WinDVD or PDVD.

I have just finished my HTPC and have Vista Home Premium with SP/1 installed. Plenty of horsepower and I am trying to decide if I can just use Vista. I have started ripping my DVD collection and know about fixing the registry. I am unsure whether I am going to use DVD Library in Vista or use MYMovies 2 which I have downloaded but not installed as a front end. I will be playing both rips and movies straight from the DVD drive.

I am not doing HD-DVD or Blu-Ray at this point and don't know if I will. So tell me your opinions please...What would be the advantage of a software based DVD player over Media Player 11 running through VMC?

Although you'll get widely varying opinions, VMC is a very good choice for playing DVDs. With EVR (Enhanced Video Renderer) in Vista you'll get a great picture.

PDVD--Don't bother for Standard Def DVD, they look terrible (IMHO).

Theatertek-- I used to use this in XP, but didn't think it was all that hot in Vista. I haven't used it in quite some time though, so maybe there have been some improvements.

If you're really into squeazing the most you can out of your DVD's you should check out the ffdshow thread. This is more in the realm of the true enthusiast however.

For simplicity's sake, I would stick with playback in VMC.

As far as front ends, experiment with both and see which one you like better. Keep in mind that there is no reason you can't have both My Movies and the DVD Library on the same machine.

Thank you. While I am an enthusiast and have other truly high end machines, this one needs to be simple enough that my wife will accept it over a stand alone player. I have it set up with a 320 gig hard drive for the OS and other programs, a 750 gig drive for movies, a 750 gig drive for music and a 500 gig external drive for photos so she can take them to different systems. I can add more drives as needed.

When I rip I leave her the menus but strip everything else. I just want it so she can make a movie start in one click. I am using VOB files and not Iso's.
