What upconverter are you using for Mastered in HD DVD?

Anyone here up convert with a 720 or 768 set? I bought the HD DVD player, I am amazed at the picture quality I'm getting from it with some of the newer regular DVD movies? I'm hearing it's easier to upconvert with a 720 because of less scaling and pixel creating. Now don't get me wrong, it's not great as HD DVD, but some disks look like I'm watching HBO HD. The old DVDs dont work as well and I noticed the ones that say mastered in HD are the ones blowing me away. It seems to be the best kept secret out there, I did find a couple of articles out there, but it appears they want to keep this out of the limelight to push HDM. It's funny that upconverting sat or cable doesn't work like this, this is why I believe the difference has to be with the mastered in HD addition. Any thoughts?

i use 3 different upscaling players, depending on my mood..
pan s77
tosh a2 and tosh a30

all are usually set to 1080i output and run thru a 720p pan. ptl500 lcd projector and displayed on 108" screen.
depending on the source pq i am very happy with the results.

yes, content mastered in hd seems to look better.
content that is real hd IS better. (is best!)

I have a 720p DLP and an Onkyo DV-CP704. The changer does the upconverting to 720p, which looks very good on most discs (although not as good as the HD channels most of the time.) I tried 1080i but I didn't like it as much.

I put on the flip side of Knocked up it's a combo, and my wife and I couldn't see too much of a difference, but the HD side a little better, both looked HD though, that is what we couldn't believe.
This is why I think Toshiba feels they could challenge BD with the 960p upconverter. It seems to be the best kept secret out there, and Toshiba will exploit it to make it seem like it's their new player, but it's really going to be the disk.
I don't think the tread is in the wrong forum, it's more about the DVDs than the players.

Dude, HD-DUD is DEAD; you are 2 years too late.

If you must, take it to the AVS HD-DVD Forum or the AVS DVD Player Forum.

For the last time: this thread doesn't belong on this Forum.

We're talking Mastered in HD disks, not HD DVD. So it doesn't belong on the HD DVD thread. These are regular DVDs that are mastered and created from 1080p and scaled down to 480 resolution. People talk regular DVD in this area. They will play on all players but look their peak on regular up-converting players. I did mention a HD DVD combo disk only to emphsize the Mastered in HD side.
This is what I mean, it's the best secret out there. Mastered in HD disks is what 95% of regular DVD has become in the past few years, and they are not exclusive to HD DVD combo disks.
Go look at some regular DVDs like Casino Royale and look at the back of the movie where it says Mastered In High Definition. Find out what's going on, if you feel talking about regular DVD is not for this area, contact a moderator, but I feel they will leave it be because it belongs here and not on the HD DVD thread.

Great thread! I've been looking for a reason to buy a HD-DVD player. Now that they are discontinued they are well priced and now with HD mastered DVDs I will really see the difference. Learned something new today.

Well you don't need a HD DVD player to view MHD, they will play on any DVD player, but if you have an upconverting DVD player it will upconvert and scale it to HD resolution. But the HD DVD player does convert better than regular upconverting DVD players, so yea you should pick one up.

I'm a little confused. Just about all recent DVDs are generated from a master that is at least HD -- many are even higher resolution. The result is a standard DVD. I don't understand how an HD DVD player can play these better than any other DVD player. Sure, most HD DVD players are better than cheaper DVD players, but there are DVD players that are better than HD DVD players. This is independent of how the DVDs were mastered? And some DVDs look very impressive in any decent DVD player.

Am I missing something here?

Well, it depends on the individual DVD player, but most HD-DVD players were clones of the Toshiba models, and they were excellent upscalers pretty much across the board. Were they the best upscalers? No, but for the price they held their own AND played HD-DVDs when that was still considered a viable format.

Sure, some of those expensive Denon models could outperform them, but at several times the price, I would expect so.

No you pretty much have it, but a lot of people are unaware of how good these new DVDs look on a good system, compared to th DVDs we had years ago, but HD DVD converters look a little better.

OK. So, any good DVD player -- be it Toshiba HD DVD player, OPPO DVD, PS3, Denon DVD or whatever will yield good results with these specially mastered DVDs. That is kinda what I figured.

You got that right, we have a nice little thread going about what movies look best upconverted, add some of your movies that look great on your set.

ive only had about 2 flics in last 3.5 yrs that didnt look good on my setup.
1st was 'k-19 (the widowmaker)' with harrison ford.
2nd was 'right at your door', more recent (about a dirty bomb going off in L.A.), looked like crap on both big screen and my 19" flat panel.

iirc, most others have looked pretty darn good! way too many to list.
