Depends what you mean by "work well". If you just want something to round out the bottom end for casual listening and low to moderate listening levels, you'll probably be able to find something for $500. Just don't expect anything anywhere near theater levels. You won't find a $500 sub that will give you real visceral impact in a huge room like that. Your best bet at getting any kind of "feel it" bass for $500 is to use nearfield placement.

Yes but its a DIY design, meaning you have to have some time to build it. The drivers and amps that will work in a room that size are available. It will be close to $500 or maybe a little over it but you will have and incredible sub.

thats a big room! remember the laws of physics. size matters. I bought a 15" cadence ($400) for a room 22x17 with 10' ceilings and it sounds good but it doesnt really fill the room. Lower frequencies are almost non existant. I'll eventually upgrade to something else. A room 40x40 might benefit better with multiple subs.

Is this for home theater use or music?

A room that size, you are pretty much looking at 2-4 subs. especially if you want to keep the price to $500. One $500 will work but the whole room won't be filled overly well and you will be asking alot from that lone sub. I would start with the one $500 and then, when funds allow, add a second and then go from there. A place to start might be a couple hundred dollars more in the MFW-15 or any of the $500-700 subs from SVS, Epic, Elemental Designs, Hsu etc. All are listed on Craigsub's list.

Two powered 15" subs to truly start to meet that demand.

You can get this together at Parts Express, you would have to be willing to assemble yourself though.
