Question for someone with a Nintendo Wii and Onkyo 805!

Hola folks,
After research regarding upscaling and the 805 vs a nintendo wii.. it seems that its worthless due to the aspect ratio refusing to stay widescreen. Means one of the intrigueing points of me buying the receiver is now next to worthless.
That aside, I'm having trouble getting audio to play from my television from the wii. I have everything ran into the receiver via hdmi that can be, and have no problems with any of it. The wii however is ran in via component, and the video.. albeit cant be upscaled properly, does display in its native reso on the tv. The audio on the other hand, I can not get to play on the tv. It has come to my attention that in order to u se the tv's speakers to play the audio, the cable will need to be hooked up directly to the tv. Although dissapointing, this is fine. Problem I'm now having is I'm unsure of where to put "in" the L/R on the receiver. I would hate to have to bypass the receiver all together for the wii, that would defeat the purpose but for now with no speakers, I would like to use it as a switch of sorts and still have audio via tv speakers. Anyone who is familair with the nintendo wii knows that nintendo's components are bound together by hard plastic tehrefore running them to different areas are impossible. The end on the nintendo side is also a custom plug so no using universal type cables either.

I apologize if this sounds jumbled.. but if someone can help me solve this or give me my options I would be grateful.

Thank you!

I have a Onkyo 705 hooked up to my cable, PS3, and Wii. What I did to hook up the wii was plug in the component cable on one of the 705's inputs and assigned it to "GAME/TV", then I plugged in the stereo audio into the "GAME/TV" part of the receiver. Then it works fine.

For the video side, I too had the same problem, but I have a projector and it was set on a different view, so I quickly changed it and got a nice 16:9 view of the wii. I'm not sure how to fix it on tv's though.

The Wii does not send an anamorphic flag to the TV, so you'll have to put your TV into "Full" mode to get it to fill the screen properly.

If you need to connect the audio cables from the Wii into the TV's audio input until you get speakers, then you can simply buy some RCA coupler/barrel connectors and use another stereo cable to connect it.

I have an Onkyo 605 receiver and a Wii. Just like tabasc07, I hooked the component video of the Wii to a component video input on the reciever and assigned that component video input as "GAME/TV." Then I just connected the audio from the Wii to the "GAME/TV" port on the receiver and everything works great. The only thing running from my receiver to the TV is a single HDMI cable. As far as the Wii goes, make sure it is set to a 16:9 display in the menu. Otherwise it will stay in 4:3 mode regardless of your receiver's upscaling. Then all I have to do on my (Samsung) TV is set the display mode to "Just Scan" which doesn't alter the aspect ratio of the source at all. I can also use the "16:9" setting (which zooms ever so slightly) and everything is fine that way too. You should have a comparable setting on your TV. Good luck.

thanks for the replies guys!
Toker, if I set my TV to full, will that apply to all sources or just the source I have the wii setup through? I'm asking b ecause I wouldnt want it to stretch/distort any of my other sources that are put in via hdmi and untouched.
That said, will it actually distort the wii image? if so, am I better off just leaving it setup at 480p?
Now that I have asked and gotten responses, It brought up a few new questions, so I apologize =(
The barrel connector and extra RCA route; what source will I need my tv set as in order to get sound if I go that route? The components will be put into the receiver, and it will be output via hdmi and run alongside my ps3 and 360 on the tv via 1 hdmi using the receiver as the switcher. Therefore how will I actually get the wii's sound?

Last but not least, after getting most of this initially hooked up and sorted, it may be in my head... but I'm curiuos if the onkyo alters the image it puts out in any way. What I mean is - I calibrated my television through all sources pre receiver with AVIA. Now when I opened the so called Hidden menu on the onkyo it gives me all the same visual adjustements my television has such as Hue, contrast etc. If those arent touched, is my image the same as when I calibrated it? Or do those need to be adjusted as well?

Oh, one more question! Same menu there is a setting for 8bit and 24bit with a 601 and 656 or something of that nature next to it. Naturally 24 bit would be better? What does that refer to? I apologize I havent had a recever before, and am eager to learn what I can!!

Thanks guys!!

Sorry, I have a question I forgot to ask a while ago. Are you using this receiver with or without surround sound speakers, or are you still using your TV's speakers for sound?

eep, sorry I thought I mentioned that but I must have forgot to. I'm just using the receiver as a switcher of sorts, and what I was hoping to be an upscaler for the wii. This is due to the fact that im a brokeass and I can only afford my surround sound peice by peice. Receiver was peice #1 so yes, I'm using the tv's speakers for now lol.. well as you can see by my thread, Im "trying" to anyhow!

Ok just checking. Thanks for the reply. Remember to check the aspect ratio setting of the Wii. To me it sounds like that may not be set properly. It's an easy place to start anyway. Also make sure the Wii output resolution is set to 480p and not 480i. Let us know how it goes.

yea that was actually the first thing I checked =P It is set for 480p (thats what I viewed it as prior) and 16:9 on my 42" lcd. The 805 is changing it somehow. As for sound, I cant even guess hence this thread =)
Shameless bump!
I'm sorry if I'm just being thick, but do you mean your TV is set to 16:9 or the Wii is set to 16:9? Because they BOTH have to be set to 16:9.
Ok I may have found it for you (I hope). My receiver (the 605) has a setting in the advanced menu where I have to select my "Monitor Type." The default setting in my receiver was for 4:3 so I had to change it to 16:9. It sounds like maybe your receiver is still set on 4:3. On my model you go to the main menu, select "Miscellaneous," then "OSD Setup'" then "Monitor Type." Hope this works.

lol no problem fireman. Well lets put it this way. My Tv is set as "wide" which is its version of 16:9, that has never changed. The Wii is set as 16:9 as well, when I first bought it I realized I had to change that in the options for obvious reasons =) Pre Onkyo 805 (ie 2 weeks ago) All 3 sources (wii/xbox360/ps3) were all hooked up via component/hdmi/hdmi and stretched/fit accordingly. Now, all 3 hooked up via the same method except through the receiver and out a single hdmi, only the last 2 fit properly if upscaling is enabled via the hidden menu. It is beginning to seem to me, The upscaling cannot be used on the wii which is very unfortunate. At the same time, I cannot seem to figure my options on getting sound out of the television speakers for it either lol. Shame on nintendo!!
Ok thanks for clearing that up for me. I really don't understand why you're having such trouble with it. I can't imagine why the upscaling wouldn't work on the Wii. The 605 I have is shooting my Wii signal right through, upscaled and in widescreen no less. As far as sound I can't say for sure cuz I have surround speakers set up (I actually have the HT-SP90 HTiB) so the sound goes from the receiver directly to the speakers and not to another component.

Just for giggles, what model of TV do you have?

my tv is a vizio 42" lcd, is only 720p/1080i but should be able to do the upscale and put it off in widescreen, not sure if im missing a setting somewhere or what. I googled it and apparently im not the only one witht he issue, however If you have a wii via component through hdmi and its upscaling properly then maybe its firmware related? Is yours in component out hdmi or in comp and out comp? Hmmm
post #15 of 26
My setup is as follows:
Comcast/Motorola HD-DVR Cable Box to receiver via HDMI
Upscaling DVD player (that came with system) to receiver via HDMI
(Pre-HDMI) Xbox 360 to receiver via component video and fiber optic audio
Wii to receiver via component video and composite audio (red & white plugs)
Ipod Dock to receiver via composite audio
Receiver to Samsung Plasma via HDMI
The only connection between my receiver and TV is the single HDMI cable.
I was looking up some Vizio TV's and their manuals. Is yours the VW42L or VX42L? I don't like the way they list 1080i and 768p (720p) together on one model. The 2 resolutions are NOT the same and I wouldn't think the TV could change resolution. Anyway, have you tried adjusting your wide setting while playing the Wii? What happened? If you're done that to no avail, I would recommend at this point contacting Onkyo and/or Vizio customer support. Please post what they tell you (if you contact them). I'm sorry I haven't been able to be of further help. I hope you're able to get the problem solved.

tv is the vw here http://www.vizio.com/products/detail.aspx?pid=27. I havent tried adjusting it via the tv, I didnt have to before so I shouldnt have to now. If i do it will just be stretching the image or contorting/zooming it. Nonetheless I might as well give it a go. And yes I believe the issue was listed as being with the 805 specifically. I'll have to link ya a thread or two if your curiuos a bit later. about to hit the hay for the evening! Thanks for the well wishing! Worst case ill be able to atleast solve the audio issue once I have some surround sound speakers =P

I have my Wii going into my 805 via component. I then have the sound cables going into AUX1. I set the AUX 1 video input to COM1 (component 1 input). After that, be sure you have your Wii set to 16:9 in the console's system options. Leave your TV in the same setting you have for everything else ("Full" on mine I believe), and it looks fine. At least on mine it does... (Panny 58" 1080p)

Cerebrex do you have the upscaling enabled via the hidden menu? and with your audio running to aux1 does it output via hdmi to the televisions speakers or are you using surround speakers?

Thanks!

from Onkyo tech support.

My question
Comments: Dear CSR, I purchased an onkyo 805 receiver recently and one of the contributing factors to my purchase was the component to HDMI out feature, as well as the ability to upscale. I was greatly disappointed to find out, that while the component to HDMI out seemed to be working for me, the upscaling would not. Atleast not properly. I'm emailing in hopes that someone can fix this, reproduce it, sort it out for me, something. I am using a nintendo wii, which can only natively put out a 480p signal via component. I have connected it to the component in on the Onkyo receiver, and it is put out via HDMI along with everything else. I use a 720p/1080i LCD tv, which has no problem displaying anything else at those resolutions, and had no trouble with the Wii at 480p with a 16:9 aspect ratio as long as it was set as such in the wii's settings. Upon starting it all up for the first time, everything worked fine, the wii displayed at 480p with a 16:9 aspect ratio. I couldnt wait to access the so called hidden menu, to force upscaling to 720p and make my nintendo wii look spectacular! Upon doing so, my aspect ratio was changed to 4:3. There lies my problem. So far, nothing within my own knowledge, that I can do.... will change it to 16:9 other than turning the upscaling off. Was your receiver designed to only upscale to standard def aspect ratios? This wouldnt make sense since most if not all hdtv's are widescreen resolution. Do I perhaps have a faulty receiver? Please advise as this is very important to me! Thank you

their response: Thank You for contacting Onkyo USA Product Support.

Mr. Lepp,

The TX-SR805 will only do the video upconvert. The TX-SR875 and TX-NR905 will do the both the upconvert and the upscaling.

Thank you,

Eric F.

Can any of you with the Wii working on your receiver explain exactly how you have it setup? I cant get mine to work. I have my 3 HDMI inputs on the receiver taken, with 1 HDMI cable to the tv. I try to put my Wii in component slot 3 and assign it to Game/TV, but I cant ever get any picture on the screen, only sound .... am I missing something? Thanks for any help.

dont thread jack! but. I cant comment if you dont plan on doing component in to hdmi out. Id assume there is component out back there that you could run to your Television. I just followed the manual and adjusted the settings on the receiver to get everything working (aside from upscaling)

back on topic, Does anyone who knows the inner workings.. know if the black bar/non upscale that they advertise as upscaling.. is in fact fixable via firmware? or if it is a hardware limitation?

As I said in what I think was your thread at HTF and the Onkyo rep also confirmed; the 705 and 805 are not advertised as upscaling, only upconverting. Scaling and conversion are completely different functions.

I'm confused a bit...why do you want the receiver to upconvert the image? Your LCD will do that anyway.

FWIW, I have an 805 and I ran the Wii through as other's have suggested and my sound plays fine (I had to enable sound over HDMI in the setup menu.) I did notice that the picture quality was absolutely better running the Wii (and my DVD player which was also connected via component) as component out on the receiver. It wasn't that the HDMI out was didn't look nice - it did, the component was just noticeably sharper. It was simple to compare because I just had them both connected and could switch between HDMI or component input on my tv and see them immediately.

So I have my PS3 and cable box plugged in via HDMI and they go out HDMI, while the Wii and DVD go out component. So there are two cables from my receiver to my tv - one for digital (HDMI) connections and one for analog (component.)

If you do HDMI in/HDMI out and component in/component out the 805 does not touch the signal at all (which is what you want.) I also had the sound coming out my tv speakers (as my regular speakers had not shipped yet.) This was connected to a Panasonic 58PZ700U.

no its not what i want. I want it touched, I want it upconverted, I want to force my 480p wii to run at 720p which I can do and it looks MUUUUUUCH better, unfortunately I can only do it with black bars surrounding it =(

as for scaling.. Im still at a loss of why it doesnt work correctly.

and riverwolf, its evident it doesnt support it, judging by the square of beautifulness on my screen with the rectangles of black ugliness around it =) Im asking if it is a hardware limitation or software/firmware.

I stepped up from the 605 a few hundred dollars to the 805 just for the upconversion.. literally that was my reason for buying. Boy did I get kicked in the balls. Way to cut a similar hand in hand type feature in half to force people to go another step up. The price difference in the 805 and 875 (when it starts scaling i think) is absurd for me to even think about paying it just for the wii. Live and learn, unless anyone's looking for a new 805 =P
post #26 of 26
Are you sure it just doesn't look better to you b/c it's running the Wii in what would be the equivalent of a window on a PC? I've seen lots of games that look "better" b/c they appear sharper when they are much smaller.

I find it hard to believe that even the 875 would make the Wii look any better than your LCD does when upscaling to 720p. From the reading I've done upscaling isn't all its cracked up to be unless you buy super expensive equipment and even then its more for correcting things like MPEG artifacts. I mean what do you really expect it to do? There's only so much you can do since you are feeding it a 480p signal. Technically my Wii is running at 1080p because that's the resolution of my TV (and is being upscaled just like the 875 would do), but it doesn't make the text in the menus look anything close to the PS3 which runs at native 1080p.
