What shall I do with my DVD version? What shall I do...what shall I do?

This may be heresy, but I just re-watched Band of Brothers in SD for the fourth time (the first time upscaled by my A2 on my 42" Aquos). It wasn't HD, but it sure looked great. I was entirely satisfied. I don't think I need to re-buy this.

I'll be in more of a dilemma when they release the widescreen version of From the Earth to the Moon in HD.

I have the HD DVD release from Japan and I thought it looked superb in HD and the DTS-HD audio was also excellent. I'm sure this one won't disappoint.

Great. Put me down for one copy of Band of Brothers. But what about John Adams? Why no BD announcement?

No doubt. But I'm not sure it's going to be a big enough increment to justify what will undoubtedly be a very expensive multi-disc set. The existing DTS surround sounds very good, and a lot of the footage was shot in such a way that, while it will of course technically be improved by an HD transfer, in the watching will still be (intientionally) grainy, shaky, and washed out.

Oh, I know, I'll see it and immediately change my mind.

It's definitely coming coming to BD. It's like Battlestar-lite. Wonderful cinematography, and great production values.

And have you seen the detail it has. Even with a cable HD broadcast it looks better than most of my BDs. People are going to start handing out 6 star reviews when this one comes out.

I'll wait for an official Band of Brothers press release though.

That was an import from Japan, right? No, I didn't see it.

I wonder if there will be any new features, commentaries, etc with this release?

I remember I rented Band of Brothers for the first time on SD DVD when the PS3 got DVD upscaling capabilities. I remember thinking to myself "this is the first time I've watched an SD DVD and actually thought it looks near HD." The intros to each episode with interviews of the actual members of Easy Company looked especially good. I still don't really get that impression from other SD DVDs, although O Brother Where Art Thou was pretty good as well.

Still, I've never owned it on DVD so it's a no brainer for me...I'll be getting the Blu-ray.

I'm only worried about the price. Couldn't afford the Star Trek season 1 for HD DVD or the Battlestar Galactica, and don't see myself paying too much for this. Rental? Probably.

Anybody else worried this could be an april fool's joke? I am EXTREMELY cautious this time of year to get excited when I see cool news. I despise april fools jokes as I have been burnt in the pass on seeing great news, being on cloud nine, and then hearing the stupid news that it was a joke.

I just sold me HD DVD set today ($215), so this is good to hear. The deal sounded good, until it came time to pack them up. But after reading this, COOL!

God I just don't understand this mindset. I could never be like that. I have to have the best version available. Especially for a huge series like this.

I have plenty of DVDs that I won't be upgrading to HD. Hell, I still watch a couple LDs. It's not the presentation, sometimes, it's the content.

You're obsessed. Of course you don't understand.

My benchmark is whether I think the poorer PQ and/or AQ will materially interfere with my enjoyment of the content -- and whether the difference is worth the cost. In this case, unless the BD set is <$50 (yeah, right) I can think of things I'd rather buy, unless there's something else compelling about the new set.

But this is HBO. I expect the set to be at least double what I'm willing to pay.

I have the SD DVDs and the HD DVDs. The beauty of BoB is that it does have everything. Great story, characters, cast, overall the best battle sequences of any movie I've seen, a definite step-up from SD in PQ and an excellent soundtrack.

Great.
I dont have the set on DVD and I was thinking about getting in on HD DVD. Now I wait for the Blu-ray version which will cost less than the HD DVD version anyway.

I wouldn't count on that. There's 6 volumes, even at $25 per thats 1-fiddy which is what I paid w\\shipping pre-order from Japan.

Right now Exploit has it for almost $200 now. With shipping, I can get it for $210ish. I don't think the BD version will cost me as much (or hopefully not as much ).

I have BOB on HD-DVD, and I was very sceptical about the HD-DVD being much better than the SD-DVD. It is, and is actually demo quality. The picture and sound are awesome! The sound is DTS-HD according to my Onkyo 805 from my XA2, so it might be even better when it is on Blu Ray, but time will tell.
If someone had come up to me before the format-war was over and offered me BoB for...well under 300$ i would have bought it straight away. But knowing it will come to BD and probably a lot cheaper im going to wait.
This is a must own for me.
If this happens I may sell my HD DVD set as they are going for $200ish now since they are so rare.

I'm watching the series now on dvd. The picture quality was terrific for dvd in the first four episodes. But since episode 5 I'm getting more and more disappointed. The action takes place in the winter, and cold fog visible in most shots makes the picture very grainy. I even thought for a while that my Oppo 980H stopped working properly. But in episode 7 there were a few examples of absolutely atrocious digital noise. For example, somewhere between minutes 28 and 29 Lt. Speirs talks to soldiers and when the camera shows a soldier's face there is so much noise that it's painful to see. If you ever heavily underexposed a photo and then tried to bring shadows back in Photoshop you would get this kind of noise.

Has anybody noticed this problem? Is it my dvd copy? It looks just as bad on Panasonic BD30.

Band of Brothers on Bluray is a must-own series for me. Do you hear me? A must own!!!!!!!
Must own! I can't call it a movie, but this is one of the best ever made.
