The "Official" Canon Vixia HF10 / HF100 Owner's Thread - Page 44

ok this thread has been great a wealth of info for a newbi to this game, got my hf10 pal a couple days ago and am just starting to figure this acvhd format out, what i need to figure out is as follows;

im about to go os for an extended holiday and want to shoot some of that in high quality for archival purposes and some in sd pal for friends and family to watch, none of which have hd setups just standard dvd and tv and for this i will be doing any edititing in final cut pro express hd and at some point moving up to the final cut studio 2 (when funds are more friendly), i understand fce hd will not deal with full hd and has to convert into vid into aic to work with files, which may take some time and as im travelling i dont want to have to sit by the laptop for hours on end what are my options?

i have read that i could use another program like voltaic to read and store the acvhd files for later use can the same be done with toast 9 hd as i already have this program and plan to use this as the dvd archive?

i have a macbook pro setup with 3gb 2.33 with plenty of extra external storage over 1tb, my software is final cut express hd and roxio taost 9 hd both of which i have almost no experience with.....

so basically what i need to know is what is the best options for archival of hd and what is the best setting for the camera and the quickest and easiest way to make some vid in sd for family and friends and maybe some stuff i can post on the net (never made vid for the net too)....... would like to ultimately shoot everything in hd and convert bits and pieces for friends and family so when my complete home setup is all hd i can get the best from the vids i shoot now..........

i hope you guys can follow me its along thread and im still getting my head round this new toy any info or experience is going to help, i think im starting to see this new world clearly...........

Top-of-the-line Intel quads are better than AMD's, so they can charge for more all of their CPUs... but if you're not getting top-of-the-line, then you can generally get better value with AMD.

You can see here, for example, that Phenom 9500/9550 does a lot better than Intel E8200 in video editing, but they cost the same (plus/minus $10, depending on the retailer):

Another good CPU comparison is here... you can see that a quad-core will cut the x264 encoding time by over 30%:

I'm planning to record outdoor basketball games during the afternoon, what settings do you guys recommend for this? And if it's cloudy or sunny?

That was super nice of them! Did they give you a hard time first, or just issue the refund with no questions asked?

Excellent!
I just upgraded my other Dell with a bunch of RAM, so I'll take that out & stick it in my new one.

I do the same thing with soccer games for my daughter. Just change the light source setting over to either sunny or cloudy. Make sure it's not in "basic mode" or you can't change the settings.
Also, I got a nice "fish eye" lense that really helped me capture more of the field, that should work well for the bb court, especially if you're taping from the center of the court.
Good luck & enjoy!

Well, I took the plunge this morning and ordered the digiemporio package I was talking about. It contains a 16Gb card (although I've also ordered a 8Gb from elsewhere). So I'll let you know how it goes once it all arrives.

Before buying my Canon Vixia HF100 last week, the last camcorder I used was a boxy, early to-mid 90's VHS-C device, so please forgive the ignorance of the following questions:

Anyway, on Saturday, I shot several scenes of an indoor reception for my daughter in "Easy" mode after having set the camcorder to its highest HD resolution mode and in "Fine" mode. What I'm wondering is, first, does using the "Easy" mode cancel out those settings, and if so, to what resolution/format does "Easy" mode default?

My other questions concern transfering the contents of the memory card to the computer and creating disks. What I'd like to do is burn a few DVD's from my card in SD mode for people without Blu-Ray/AVCHD capability and also make one for myself that I can view on my BluRay player. Is that possible? Or is it possible to view what I download from the camcorder to the computer in HD mode in any other way? Also, if the computer has a CD burning drive, but not a DVD burning drive, am I out of luck altogether?

Thanks for any and all information/suggestions.

If you use 4GB or 8GB cards, you can create a full backup without authoring software, and it will be playable on a blu-ray player, see here: http://www.elurauser.com/articles/avchd_to_bluray.jsp

If you have larger cards or you do not want a full backup, then you need to author an AVCHD disk, Ulead MF 5.6 SE worked for me well, I did not try software that came with my HF100.

Sure, get a codec and watch using your favorite player. I use CoreAVC codec, it is inexpensive and fast and has very useful deinterlacing options.

You won't be able to create an AVCHD disk on a CD. I mean it is possible but I am not sure that BD players will play it. You can try.

FYI, I bought a new mini-hdmi>hdmi cable from monoprice and it works perfectly - the first adaptor was the culprit.

Then I picked up a mini HDMI to HDMI adaptor.

The HF10 outputs fine on component, but I get nothing on HDMI.

I'm using a Panasonic TH-50PZ85U (1080P capable plasma) & am using an input on the Panasonic & a HDMI cable that work fine with 2 other 1080P devices. So I know it's not the cable or the plasma.

The HF10 reads "DVI" in the HDMI status window when connected.

Not having a second mini HDMI to do an A & B test, I figure either:

a) I have missed some setting or parameter

b) the mini HDMI adaptor is defective

c) the HF10 is defective

Has anyone else encountered this?

Thanks,

Caleb J. Clark

You can buy brackets with standard (cold) shoe on one end that connect via the tripod mount on the bottom of the camera. Then it's simply a matter of plugging the mic into the mini-jack on the camera. You won't be using the proprietary Canon hotshoe at all.

no questions asked. Just told me to get the correct ones.

Any advice on using Pinacle Studio 12 Ultimate with Canon HF10?
Do you still need Pixela to load clips to PC?
Just curious if the HF10 costs only $85 more than the HF100, would you get the HF10?

Thanks, which video mode and frame rate do you use to record the games?

When recording in the best quality, FXP mode (17Mbps), how much material are you able to record on an 8GB SDHC? Will you be able to get 2 hours on there?
Never mind.
In just a few seconds after posting, I found this...

Perhaps owners can verify:

In FXP mode (17Mbps)
2GB SD/SDHC Card = 15 min
4GB SD/SDHC Card = 30 min
8GB SD/SDHC Card = 60 min

If I remember correctly, the included battery lasts only 1 hour on a full charge.

Anyone that intends on doing any field work (like myself) with the HF 10/100 should take note of this.

I am very happy with my HF100 but have one question.
Could someone please test this and let me know if this is the same for all or if I have a fault.

In photo mode
OIS enabled
Fully zoomed
Handheld as steady as possible

The image on the LCD moves around like I was on a boat.
(No, I have not been drinking.)

The resultant photo is great.

Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

One more video using the HF-100 off a projection screen. Quality is top notch!

That looks right.

I have an HF10 with a 16GB SDHC card - 32 GB total. With 2 BP819 battery packs at about 2 hours each I have 4 hours total recording time when I go out for "field work." I plan to get another 8 GB SDHC card to go with the stock BP809 battery pack to get an extra hour - 5 hours total.

Yes, I make videos of my daughter's soccer games. I burn them in HD-DVD format for myself, (I have and HD-DVD player), and in SD format for other parents of the girls on the team. I use Ulead Video Studio Editor 11 to do this. I have an 1080p tv, so the HD-DVD's look stunning. If you are burning BluRay and SD DVD's, you can probably do this with the Pixela software that comes with the camera.

As long as you use the DVD-R's for the Pixela sw burning SD format.

I'm quite interested in knowing what settings folks are using on the HF10/HF100 for indoor video both for bright to medium lighting and then dim lighting.

I tried the following 16GB and it works fine in all modes:
http://www.meritline.com/a-data-16gb...lash-card.html

However, the HF100 thinks this PQ1 8gb is too slow and will not record on full-rez even though the cards says it is class 6:

Good Luck!

I'm in the market for an HD camera and I am considering the canon HF-10. Found out that you can get the hf10 now at bhphoto for $640 shipped. Considering it's just released few months ago that's a significant price drop. Any reason for this quick drop in price? Or is this camera included with canon's current instant rebates program? Any other reputable online storesthat you guys can recommend would be great!

As soon as I read this I thought, "No #uckin' way!"
I was just at their site last night looking at the HF-100 for that price.

Just re-checked again. Are you sure you didn't mean the HF-100 because they list the HF-10 at $820?

yeah my bad, it's the hf-100. But still just 2-3mos ago these were selling for over $1000? That's a pretty big depreciation for a short period of time. Were these not selling good or what?

Actually a better price can be found by doing a Google search on: Canon Vixia HF10

When you do this, Google will display one of a few running a sale for $499.

Right now as of this posting two sites: soniccameras.com and photodynasty.com

I have been googlin' this model for a few weeks and every so often the price will disappear but for the most part, the price will be $499. GL.

keyword is REPUTABLE online store. For that price those sites are probably bait and switch scam.
