Once again my evil plan to have others do the work for me comes together....

OK, now I'M getting frustrated.

How do you stop life from getting in the way?

ANOTHER weekend with no work in the basement. By the time we did all the usual running around on Saturday, I was in no mood to start in the basement (although, we DID get to Five Guys for lunch, so at least at that point I was feeling pretty good).

Then Sunday, my neighbor (most generously) brought a over a doggie door for the sliding door. He had a probelm with his, bought another parts, and then found out it has a lifetime waranty and got free replacement parts, so this one was just sitting there and he GAVE it to me. So I guess I at least owe him a bottle of wine.

So Sunday was install the doggie door, clean the carpet before putting down the new runner we picked up on Saturday and TRYING to teach the dog to use the doggie door. Again, by the time I got through with that, I was in no mood to work in the basement.

At least the dog can use the doggie door. Five or six treats and he's getting the idea. Then he starts going through on his own. He still doesn't want to go out unless I go out, but he DOES use the door. Evenually, he'll start going out without me. I also noticed in the last day or so that the effects of last week's "procedure" are kicking in. Less running around and a LOT less hand grabbing. He seems to be sleeping a little more during the day, too. I also noticed that he isn't trying to tear the door down when I leave the room. Maybe I won't have to be with with all the time and can start getting some time in the basement.
Look at it this way, if you are frustrated for not working in the basement it means that you are motivated. So once you do find some time, you should be able to get some stuff done without getting bored.

At my current rate I hope to have the rest of the basement 99% done by the end of February. At that point 100% of my effort will be focused on the theater. It would be good to make some progress before the warm weather drags me outdoors.
I know what you mean Tom. Had grand plans to work in the basement this weekend. Friday night in the spare room in the basement, I notice wet windows on the inside and outside. Water on the sill. I go outside and look up and water is running down the inside of the window. I mean pouring down! Go upstairs and the dishwasher is flooding the floor.

Saturday installed a new LCD mount on the wall in the bedroom. Wife was out so I was stuck at home (forgot to mention my truck has been in the shop all week) with no vehicle.

Got up Sunday and took the the wife's Cadillac to Lowes, picked out a new dishwasher and waited for the #2 son to transport the new dishwasher back to the house in his SUV. Pulled the old one out and of course had to run back into town and pick up a dishwasher install kit at Lowes. The guys at Lowes were very helpful for once. Sometimes they act like you are bothering them.

By that time it's 4 PM. Day is done. Maybe next Saturday.....

...I hear you...golf season is FAST approaching.

Randy -

Glad to hear you caught the dishwasher before it turned into a huge problem. Is the water valve on a timer or a float in those things? I'm thinking if it's a float and leaking, you're likely to leak a LOT of water. If it's on a timer, at least it shuts itself off after while.

Any major damage to walls floor or windows?

I'm thinking for $20 I'd have rented one their trucks to get it home. Unless you're more than 30 minutes away. Which is quite possible up there in the back country.
I think the dishwasher is over 10 years old. A contractor grade at best. It's history. No damage to the ceiling or walls. It appears it came down the rim joist and into the window case work. We were lucky to notice it, we don't visit that room very often.

We were planning on upgrading all the appliances for a while... this will just escalate it. Number 2 son is a General Manager of a car dealership, so I don't need to rent any vehicles

I'm thinking that old dishwasher will look pretty damn great on my front porch this summer. I had to move the cement blocks that I have holding the truck up, it was killing the grass...

Your story about your dog reminds me of my first dog when I was a child. She was an inside dog to start with until she chewed my moms dresser, sofa, end table, night stand, bathroom cabinet, etc., etc. Mom finally moved the dog outside on a chain connected to a dog house. She would not go in the dog house for anything. One day I had to SHOW her how to use the house by crawling in and out repeatedly pulling her in and out of the dog house with me. After the Nth time she finally got it.

Should have tried the treat route.

Regards,

RTROSE

I can't believe it, I think I made it in the clear and didn't get Loganed during the building phase.

They are putting texture and primer on in the next week and then I can start painting
post #1123 of 3524
You think you've got what it takes? I'm renovating an entire house from the frame up and I still bet I beat you. So what if its been five months and i'm not done framing yet. So what if i have no electricity or heat. It's on!

Wow, Logan gets slammed by a noobie and one doing his whole house.

itsameian, you're going to fit right in.

First things first.

I actually made a little progress this weekend. "Little" being the operative word.

I figured out how to mount the ceiling RSIC clips in an easily repeatable manner. I figured out the dimensions for a block of wood that I mount the clip to using a scrap of 1/4" luan between the top of the actual clip and the bottom of the block, rotate the clip, then mount the block to the joist using another scrap of 1/4" between the top of the block and the subfloor above. So far, I've only mounted the clips using the long holes so that I can make some adjustments if I need to. Once I get all of the clips mounted, I can go back and level them off. The ONE section of DWFC I got up (I DID say a "little" progress) reads level just hanging the way it is now.

I'm hoping it won't be too hard to go back and level them all. I DO have a couple of line levels, so that should help. Then I'll go back and run in the additional screws for the clips.

As I was moving around the "stuff" to get to the box of clips, I found the couple of rolls of Integrity Gasket I bought, oh, I don't know, a year ago? Forgot about it. So I applied that to the face of the original studs under my stairs. That is the ONLY non-decoupled wall in the basement. I also ran it between all of the "studs" under the main HVAC trunk line. There were already one or two place where the trunk line was almost touching. And as I'm going around doing that, I'm finding about a million other places I could have used it.

Second thing second.

I believe scawt was one of those nose-pokers. He just hung around and stuck his nose in once in a while. Of course, he COULD have been doing the other nose-poking thing the entire time, but I can't attest to that. I'm just sayin'. IF he wanted a piece of me, he should have stood up like man.

Now, itsameian is another story. If he read the entire thread, he would know that building a house scares me not. He's what now, the third? I haven't been defeated yet. I'll take you on. You may be from Cheyenne, but this ain't no Social Club, Harley. Did I ever tell you how my Uncle Charlie got all stoved up? You see, he lived out on the plains. One day he went out to the outhouse and thar warn't a cow in site. Ten minutes later, 500 head of steer come through and knocked over Uncle Charlie, outhouse and all. He ain't been to the outhouse since and that was 20 years ago.

itsameian, you've been LOGANED.

Enjoy your non-house building future.

Definitley. My dog will do ANYTHING for treat. Eight days seems to be the time it takes for new stuff to sink in. Put the doggie door in last Sunday. He learned to use it quickly, but still wanted me to go out with him. Saturday while I was in the basement and the LOGANESS was out and about, I heard him go out the door once or twice. Yesterday he went out several times. I can FINALLY take my shoes off at night and not worry about jumping up to get him out the door. This morning, LOGANESS says she couldn't find him in his usual spot rolled over waiting for his belly rub. She found him out on the deck sititng in what little sun hits the deck this time of year just soaking it up.

Hope he enjoys it....looking at more snow tonight and tomorrow. The snow/ice from last week got packed down and throughout the freeze thaw cycles has turned into rock. I bought an 8lb maul to try to break it up some hoping yesterday's relative mild temps would melt it off. All the maul did was leave little dents. There was STILL some ice out there this morning. But I gotta say, it IS pretty funny watching the dog sliding around out in the back yard.

At least his four-wheel-drive lets him get out there, unlike my two-wheel-drive.

Why is it that the supposedly simple jobs never turn out that way. Is it the Logan curse?

#1 The kids bedrooms both have small (4'x4') walk in closets that are next to each other. The guest room that next to one of the kids rooms has a 6'x6' closet. So me gets to thinking.....if I put a door on the guest room closet into the kids room, block off the door on the guest side and the join the 2 smaller closets both kids would have decent sized walkins.......good plan

Well I start cutting the new door and see kraft backed insulation......now as this is your typical builder crap house I thought - why is the insulation between interior walls. Lucky I did as I forgot that the house had a bump out and I was a bout to put a door to the outside. So had some drywall patching to do

#2 The master closet which is about 10'x9' had a dividing wall. Idea being you can have 4 rows of hanging clothes.....only problem is if you hang clothes on all sides you have about 12" down the middle.

So I thought I'd take down the wall. No problem you'd think.......but stupid builder ran a vent pipe thru it so now I got to re-run that. Althou told wife I was turning it into a permanent pole so she could dance for me. I'll let you know when the bruises heal.

Yeah, Logan's curse has hit me. Framing has been "almost" done for 4 weeks now. My anxiety over the economy has me spending $0.00, so I have no desire to use up those last 2x4's so that I would need more.
Well Tom, I don't know how you managed it, but whatever you did to the economy has stopped me for now.

And why are there always three screws left over when you're done?

I almost always find that when I have job with two parts to it, a hard part and an easy part, the easy part ALWAYS turns out harder than the hard part.

Brit, stop. You're killing me, man. That is funny. Of course, I'M not the one that would have taken that first step through the door!

Chiahead -

I have three words for you....

Bwa Ha Ha!
well, with any luck I should be ready for my framing inspection next week. Only two more walls left to build, then i will have the go ahead for electical, it will be so amazingly nioce to be able to work longer than sundown due to a lack of light. I also think my neighbor is getting fed up with me running extension cords from the outlets on the outside of his house

I already got all the rough-ins. I'm good to drywall right now, if I choose to. Still have to hang the ceiling RSIC clips and DWFC and finish insulating the interior walls and ceiling, THEN I'm ready to drywall.

But I like to give you guys a fighting chance. So I take my time. Just want you to know where I am, so you know what to expect.

scawt - YOU'VE BEEN LOGANED.

Good luck making ANY progress now.

BeerParty -

You know, I usually try not to dignfy the nose pokers with a response. But I like your screen name. It reminds of my youth. I reckon I was drinking beer while you were still a glimmer in your Daddy's eye.

IF you read the entire thread, you would know that the reality is I don't have to do ANYTHING. And I'm talking in REAL reality, not Dimension X reality. Just ask Chiahead from a couple of posts up.

So unless you've got a build going and you want to step up, you're still just a nose pick...er...poker. And that's just because I'm trying to keep it clean.
