Need motivation? Get "LOGANED" - Page 57

Logan, I have to say that you have really let me slip. I've been sitting here for almost 6 months with no measurable changes to my theater/basement. I need your help... Again.

Sounds like Logan has done everything he promised to do in this case. If you want motivation then you want either RPH Drew to kick your butt into gear, or a different thread entirely.

OK, I'm back. Was VERY busy at work and had a major software deliverable due today that we got done yesterday. And after last weekend's fiasco I just wasn't into it. I just couldn't get myself to upload those pics either. THIS weekend, I promise.

So....

What's all this obsession over carpet? I like checking out carpet. Deep pile, close cut, even '70s shag...it's all good. We ARE talking about the same thing here, right? I mean, you guys aren't talking about carpet carpet, are you? I would be VERY disappointed if you were.

The sheep talk is bad enough, but who brought up the GOATS/ THAT just seems wrong on SO many levels. I'm REALLY starting to wonder about you "guys."

Lots 'o talk not much building. With a few notable exceptions, and you know who you are. (If you just asked yourself, "does he mean me?" then you are NOT one of them.)

MY plans for the weekend: night golf tonight (can't be any worse then during the day), tomorrow install shower stall (you know, actually DO it this time) and finsh hanging the bathroom drywall. Maybe fix up the mistakes. Then check out some carpet (oops, I was only supposed to be thinking that). Sunday, hang some plywood in areas I want to be able to mount shelves, etc.

Oh, and I almost forgot....

You want encouragement, go watch Oprah. You want motivation, I'll give you some motivation. In the words of the immortal John Wayne, "What'll it be?"

Normally we don't leave our comrades behind, but we thought you were already dead AND buried. Welcome back to the land of the living. Now, unless you want me to make an imprezion on your butt, you'll know what to do to.

Well, el_KaBONG!!!! You've been LOGANED!

Now, who's old enough to get THAT reference?

Been so busy not working on my "build" that I fell behind in my important reading, like your thread Tom.

Thanks for prompting that old memory. Here's a picture from that in case you want to occasionally drive home the point with photos in future Loganations.

OK, busy weekend and actually got some work done.....

Hung frywall and installed shower surround in bathroom. DEFINITELY convinced myself to hire out the rest of the room. Think that I'll finish up the bathroom and under the stairs, though. Needs a lot of, uh, shall we say, touch up? I'd be embarrased to have a pro see it.

Last week's (late as usual) before pics......

HEY, BRIT!!! I'm actually using the lift!

Ceiling up.

This week's pics.....
Shower surround in and drywall up, from doorway lookin in.

From shower looking out.

WAKE UP PEOPLE! I can see progress, now....I'm getting motivated!!!!

Looks like there is now photographic evidence that Logan has worked up a sweat working on his HT.

Getting drywall feels like such a milestone!

So did the Loganess spray you with a water bottle to make it look like you actually broke a sweat?

That sweat from last week is nothing compared to the sweat it took this week to shave down the one warped stud that wouldn't let the back panel of the surround fit in plumb and level.

In the pic right above, it's the back corner on the same wall as the plumbing. If you look close you can see it. Of course I couldn't see it until I tried to fit the dang thing in there about a million times. I ended up shaving so much that the nailing flange was recessed into the stud about an 1/8". When I put the level on it now, it's within the bubble.

You're going to need some super-sized covers for the outlet and switch box in that bathroom. Do they make 8"x8" covers for a single outlet?

Ha, Ha - at least you got to use the drywall lift we purchased together once.

yeah, well, that's a couple of the "touch ups."

Actually, I used it way back when, when I had to raise up my sagging main HVAC trunk. And I have a few places in the ceiling that I want to put plywood as the first layer to be able to anchor some things, so I'll want it to do that before I hire out the rest of the job.

WUSS!!!

Can we get his drywall people to be Loganed too?
Nice work Tom! Who needs outlet covers? Instead of can lights, go for the bare bulb look too!

Aready done...just didn't show the pic. HEY! Maybe THAT's why I couldn't get a good measurement...too dark. Yeah, that's it. That's the reason....it was too dark.

Looks like you boys will get another free pass weekend. The band has an over night gig Saturday (road trip!) so I will probably just have time to do a little clean up, MAYBE fix that portion of the bathroom wall the needs the oversize wallplates.

Just saw a coupe of tips for crown molding in a magazine, thought if I put them in here, it would be easier to refer back here than to try to find the right magazine.

1. When measuring for an inside length of crown (that would be a section that has two inside corners), measure from one corner out 10". Then measure from the other corner to the line and add the 10" back in. This compensates for trying to read the bend in the tape measure in one corner.
2. For length of 10' or less add an additional 1/32". For length over 10' add additional 1/16" for a tight fit.
Sorry, I haven't been loganed and I don't plan on starting my theatre within the next 4 or 5 years but I was just wondering if crown moulding will still be in style by the time Tom gets to that point? I know crown is said to be timeless, but so is the length of this build.
Logan, I followed your type of cutouts for the drywall. Except I don't have an excuse, as I used a rotozip and still screwed it up. Good thing I started in the unfinished space. I will have pics of the "learning" later this weekend.

Forgot a step
3) Cut new piece cause you forgot to add the 10" back in

I considered using the rotozip but given my skill at free-handing that thing, I thought I'd take the measure twice route. If you look carefully at that picture, you can see the pencil lines I drew based on my measurements. The one for the outlet would have been off by a good inch, too. I measured it twice, drew it out on the drywall and said, "NAAAHHH...that CAN'T be right." Went back, measured AGAIN and even though it's closer, it's STILL way off.

Tom:

Get yourself one of the Blind Mark Kits. http://www.blindmark.com/index.htm

They sell the outlet kit at Lowe's and HD.

They will make hanging drywall MUCH easier. No more measuring for outlets...just install the insert, put the drywall up, find the insert with the second magnet, trace around it, cut out with rotozip tool. They even make one for the can lights that works VERY well.

Shameless bump so my friend (the lawyer/pilot/trumpet player...you know who you are) who just got back from CEDIA in Atlanta and met David Bott can find my thread.

OK, that and to finally reply to CJ....

I actually HAVE a Blindmark. Maybe even two. I picked them up for $5.00 each in the clearance bin at Lowes a while ago. IF I undersatnd properly, the problem is all my boxes are dressed. Don't I need to remove all of the switches/outlets to use it?
What... no likey movie pics... Maybe because those are so far in the distant future for ya???

How about some progress pics. HT 1.0 (and the entire basement) is nearing completion.

P.S. Hire out the drywall. Drywall lift or not we would like to see this completed this millennia.

Well, yes, you do. In a typical build plan, you frame, plumb, add electrical rough in, insulation, THEN drywall. In that sequence, the electrical boxes are full of wire only and have not been energized.

Given how many of us do things, removing the devices and turning the circuit off to install drywall MAY save time. I say MAY because if you have skill in measuring and cutting the openings, removing the devices will slow you down. But, if you are like me, ANYTHING that you do to avoid having to measure and cut a semi-precise hole is time well spent!

Hey Tom, any progress since the bathroom? My drywall comes this Friday, and I need to know how far ahead the Loganator is... Or if he is throwing in the towel and going to pay to have it hung... No shame really, we've seen your not cut out for this theater building thing...

I'll be quiet now, becasue I definately plan on hiring out the drywall finish work.

I DID replace the drywall with the REALLY bad cutouts with drywall with only mildly bad cutouts.

Haven' been able to upload the pics as my DSL has been down unusually more than normal. Like, down maybe two or three times that I can remeber over the last five years, and two or three times over the last WEEK.

Anyway, hoping this weekend to get some of the plywood up in the areas I want to have that as my first layer. Also been debating about building a false wall on the side of my stairs, and wether or not to build the closets before or after the main drywall is up.

And maybe I need to hold a "consult night" to, you know, have the locals figure out for me what I need to do before the rest of the drywall goes up.

Progress is progress. My daddy always told me that falling on your face is at least moving forward.

Tom:

DO volunteer to get something started. There are plenty of folks willing to help!

SO true. And when you dribble one off the tee, it's STILL closer than it was before.

No doubt about that! I think I'll move this particular request over to the "other" site for the locals to check out. Will have to do that form home tongiht, though.

BTW, was walking the dog last night and saw a couple of guys working at a neighbor's house, so going to have them stop by for a drywall estimate. They've done several bathrom projects for the neighbor, so I know they're good and have been around a while. Also have cathan's guys #, so should be getting something scheduled fairly soon.

Well...

No progress for ME over the weekend. And I don't see a whole lotta updates from the rest of you slackers. Except, of course, from Speedy Cathan-zales. IF you plan to actually beat me, you must act like the Detroit Lions and take advantage while you can.

I DID have one guy over for a drywall estimate. I haven't actually SEEN the estimate yet, but he's been there. He alluded to a 5-8 day schedule to start in 2-3 weeks. He seems to be on board with what I'm trying to accomplish (DD + GG) and was rather impressed with the work so far. I have two more calls to make. BIG PLUS...says he can fix the bathroom disaster.
Was that my guy?

Also, be aware since I am no longer am watching football on Sundays (well at least the Redskins) I'll have lots of extra time to get the project wrapped up. Room with be 100% done (construction wise) this weekend.
