An update a week late.....

Got this delivered two weeks ago....


It's an Elite elctric screen, 106" wide. I basically bought it for parts as it was less than ordering and making one up. I have the original SMX material and will switch it out. For now it works.

I realized that it is designed to mount against the wall. In order to get it mounted against the back of my lighted soffit and still have the white side facing out, I had to remove and switch the mountiing brackets. It was easy except that only one of the three screw holes lined up. It was nothing a little drilling didn't fix.

Here it is mounted and in the down position. I took a 12' 2x4, measured and marked the mounting screws. Then clamped the 2x4 to the open studs in the back of the soffit, leveled and attached the 2x4. Then I just lifted the screen and slid the bracket onto the mounting screws. Pretty straight forward. I'll paint the ends of the 2x4 black next time I get the paint out.


Now my next job is to clean up the bar area so I can finish IT. The problem is that any flat surface automatically becomes a work table. Here is a series of pics of the bar area that I have to clean up. Hey! I had to put the stuff from the theater area SOMEwhere.








Oh, and here's my temp setup!

Already there. Moved the big sliding compound miter saw and stand up to the garage. Brought down my smaller, fixed 10" miter saw and the little rolling cabinet it fits on to give a little more room and its easier to move around. Need to wrap up that extra carpet pad and store it, store some empty equipment boxes, etc., etc., etc.

Yes, a big job! I think the one good thing is that a lot of the mess is for parts to be built/installed in this area of the room, so as I finish the room the big stuff will go to it's final resting place. Then it's the tools.

In the meantime, here's your Monday Handy Hometheater DIY Tip:

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT cut the old screen off the roller when trying to replace the material until you are SURE that the new material will work for you.

Old screen is cut off the roller, new screen is cut.

This COULD be a REALLY expensive "experiment." Originally, I was planning on a smaller fixed screen and bought enough to make two screens (in case I TOTALLY screwed one up or for some reason needed to replace it). Now with the bigger screen, there is only enough for one. So, if this DOESN'T work out (and it MIGHT yet), I'm screwed.

That's EXACTLY what I plan to do if I can't save this one. Really, so far, this could be the only real (and expensive) mistake that can't be fixed I've made. Even considering the original loss of the dricore, that was covered by insurance and was replaceable. IS there such a thing as screen insurance?

My original plan was/is to mount my 65" DLP behind the screen for TV and 3d watching. HOWEVER, I've been re-thinking that plan. When I test mounted my fixed deck screen, it was a REAL pain to get behind there for anything. I bought the cheap electric and and found it much easier to just raise and lower the screen to get back there.

I know, I know, how much am I going to have to get back there once everything is up and running?

Probably not much, but it is really low headroom between the stage and the soffit above and it takes a lot of room to move a fixed frame around. So I'd be LESS inclined to want to move it for fear of banging into things.

That, and 120" is just TOO big for my room. Yes, there IS such a thing.

Fortunately, I have some cash sitting around that I planned to use to buy the equipment and due to the pay-as-you-go nature of this build, I haven't needed it up to this point. So it won't be so bad to buy a new screen, but we'll have to fly coach to Hawaii. And LOGANESS may have to dance at one of the luaus, because, trust me, NO ONE wants to see ME in a grass skirt and coconut shells.

....or tending the Still. Don't forget the Still tending!
